Jul-04-01, 00:13 AM (EST) "Tehachapi Pass!!" LAST EDITED ON Jul-04-01 AT 00:21 AM (EST)My friend and I are members of the La Mesa Model Railroad Club at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. We've been working hard on building the pass for the Train-Sim, and we have this thing nailed almost 100%. Right now we're setting it up to look like it does today, but it will be easily adaptable to the 1950's era. Here's a pic, we just finished the loop about an hour ago, we still gotta put the terrain in and some final details, but y'all should get a kick out of this!
(Hopefully the picture uploaded... If not I'll try again.)Message Areas - "Tehachapi Pass!!" – image 1Message Areas - "Tehachapi Pass!!" – image 2

Jul-04-01, 01:35 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" Here's some more pics of Caliente and Allard. It still needs some work but the track and grades are almost perfect to the real thing. We used actual topographical maps, measured curve radii and tangent lengths. We've built from Edison to Cable so far. We'll build west into Bakersfield soon, and east to Barstow and hopefully south down Cajon Pass to LA. Sorry about the pic quality, I haven't figured it all out yet. Now if only someone would model a Cab-Forward steamer.... Message Areas - "Tehachapi Pass!!" – image 3

Jul-04-01, 12:57 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Cajon Pass (was RE: Tehachapi Pass!!)" We probably won't get to Cajon Pass for quite a while, but I do want to do it. If I can come across some U.S. Geological Survey maps of the Cajon Pass, then we can re-create it almost perfectly. I'm not sure where to get them though. The ones we are using for Tehachapi came from the model railroad club we belong to. Anyway, I'll try to get more pics up (of better quality I hope) as soon as we get more done.John Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-04-01, 03:49 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" LAST EDITED ON Jul-04-01 AT 04:34 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Jul-04-01 AT 04:32 PM (EST) Yeah Tehachapi Passs had it all in the 1950s...

Straight mainline with hi-speed, TIGHT curves with grades (slow speed),

Drag freights, Mixed manifests, Locals, Branchlines, Hi-stepping passenger trains like the; San Joaquin Daylight (51/52), Owl (57-58), West Coast (59/60)(mail), Ex-"Tehachapi" (55/56)(coach-mail),
and the
Santa Fe San Francisco Chief (4/23). We are going to have the switching areas in Magunden, Edison, Taft, Buttonwillow, Arvin, Caliente, Woodford, Tehachapi, Mojave, Searles Branch to Keeler and the narrow gage going to be modeled at least in the 1950s version. I hear that the SP 4449 in "Daylight" will be modeled soon and a generic 2-8-0 is in the works. There is also talk of a SP F-1 2-10-2 based on the Texas Lines #982 ex-SP Pacific Lines #3651. We'll be egerly awaiting the addition of these steam engines.-------------------------------------------- There also sevral good looking F-7A+Bs out there in the works. Mostly for Santa Fe. Is anyone going to repaint an F-unit into "cat whisker", which is great. Tehachapi will also need a lot of SP "Black Widow" F-7 A-B-B-A sets after 1955. Keep up the good work bnsf4794!!! Yep, we're coming along well, we're almost to Mojave now, a matter of 400meters to the "Jawbone" branch switch. We had one derailment today running left-hand running thru Tehachapi Westbound with 3 Dash-9s and 60 cement cars, these cars sure are light they must be emptys, at the East end of the wye siding doing about 45-55mph... Cars and engines piled two to three deep, Ouch! Lessons learned... #1....Don't go over 10deg manual switches that have recently been thrown, reset, and has not been "spiked-over."#2....Don't go over 10deg manual switches at 50mph? #3....No problem at 25-30mph... Jul-04-01, 04:23 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" Again, looks like fine work La Mesa guys! (as an aside I was down there last month, their real modeling looks even better).Double track is quite doable with dynamic track. I've done a two mile test section so far with multiple mild curves and was able to line up both ends to a standard double track piece with a little dynamic track ingenuity, and sucessfully ran a train across it. Parallel tracks didn't have any grade differential problems, though if you go to separated mains that might get tricky. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Normally this wouldn't be a problem but since there is a grade.... well let's just say I'm glad that part of the railroad is behind us now! Ok, back to work I go.

>with your tehachapi route??
> -just wondering...
>Dan Hi Dan,The route is coming along just fine, one problem we are running into though is that we don't have the *.ACE compression tool that Kuju used so it looks like we will have to call out some of the objects (that or sacrifice frame rates big time on many user's puters) from the Marias Pass route that Kuju sold to Microsoft. However, we are making several key models that are unique to the route that will give it the right flavor. As for the bursting bubbles and jumping ship, well, the fact of the matter is this, John and Jason did not have any means to distribute the route, and they also needed some help to finish the project as well. Believe me, if there was an easy way to distribute this route to the masses, and do all the models that are necessary to give it justice we would offer it free to the community. Unfortunately that is not reality, so yes we will be asking for $34.95 for the route, I hope that we can count on your support, and I promise the route will be worth every penny, not to mention it will help us to bring many more kewl routes to this community.Stay on track you guy's, your stuff is going to be the bomb on this route!peace, out

Aug-23-01, 08:49 PM (EST) 35. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" Well, I bet the quaility will be very high and that it will certaintly be good, But I have to bring up the point again, this route is 35 bucks and the whole game is 45, now that is 78 % of the game that we are paying for ONE route, if we paid 35 dollars for the game, they in theory using what we have now, the game would have only came with 4.68 routes(I know you can't have .68 of a route but you get my point). I no that somebody was gonna bring up the price facter, I guess it had to be me.Chris Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-23-01, 09:18 PM (EST) 36. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-01 AT 09:19 PM (EST)Hey guys,Yes, we are going to try to get the Cajon route (the High Desert Line Route) out before Christmas, we'll see. The guy's are still laying track at the bottom of Cajon, and we still have alot of work to do between Summit and Barstow. Btw, most of the track work so far is dynamic, about 90% of it anyways. And Chris, I'm sorry, but your analogy or "price factor" as you call it is kind of like comparing apples to oranges. I tell you what, if you can get me one million pre orders of this route (like Microsoft had with Train Simulator), I will lower the price of the route to $5 <g> Seriously though, my pockets can't begin to compare with Bill's, so unless you make a more realistic comparison, that analogy is flawed. Now, I would guess you already knew that though, like you said, someone was bound to bring it up, and I'm glad it was you Stay on track!peace, out

Aug-23-01, 09:26 PM (EST) 37. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" Aug-23-01, 09:59 PM (EST) 38. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" I understand charging for the route, especially with the time frame involved in getting the route put together, I, however will wait for someone else to purchase the route first before i drop $35 on it, Trust me I know it takes alot to put into a route, but i also know the route building technology is in it's infancy, so for me i think it will be best to wait and determine the following.#1. does the route do justice to the real thing.(doesn't have to be perfect, just plausible).#2. will it be relatively bug free.#3. with all the custom objects, what will the impact on frame rates be?dont get me wrong, I am not against charging for the route by any means, I just want to make sure one gets what he pays for.

Aug-24-01, 03:24 PM (EST) 44. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" The route is around 70-80 miles long, unfortunately in the route editor there's no good way to measure mileage so I can't tell you for sure. About 40 miles of the route is winding through the mountains, so it would take about 2 or 3 hours to run the entire thing. On another note, I expected some people to become upset when my buddy and I decided to team up with 3dTrainstuff, but what 3dRailhound said is entirely true, we had no means to distribute. And speaking for myself, I'm a broke college student tired of working crappy jobs, so I saw an opportunity and took it . I didn't jump off a ship, I climbed aboard one! It's no different than seeing a demand for model railroad equipment and starting a company to produce it. Did Athearn and Kato and Atlas jump-ship when they started out, or did they see an opportunity to earn a living? Should they give away their hard work? Y'all have seen the editors, it's hard work! Back to work I go! God Bless.

Aug-26-01, 12:36 PM (EST) 57. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" Will the route be available on CD, or download only? I'm willing to pay for quality stuff, but only if it comes in a box. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-26-01, 03:35 PM (EST) 58. "RE: Tehachapi Pass!!" Yes the route will be on CD. You'll be able to order and pay online and then we'll send out the CD. I don't have any more details than that, I'm not in charge of that aspect of the operation. I think that the smaller items we will have available soon (such as locomotives) will be download-only.
