Feb-06-02, 06:06 AM (EST) "Marias Pass v3.0 coupler problems" I'm not sure if this question already has been asked, but have the problems regarding coupler breaks been dealt with? Last night I was running a freight westbound from Shelby, 1 SD75I, 1 C30-7, 1 FP45, 1 SD40-2 and 57 freight cars, and the coupler snapped just at the entry crossover at Cutbank (east end). Somewhat irritating, as I was trying a new activity I've been making.I also downloaded the fix from Microsoft, and tried running helper duty up the pass, which does work, but the sound at the front of the train is 3 SD70MAC's idling up the hill. Is there any way to correct this so the sound actually represents the correct throttle settings?Thanks,Nicholas

Feb-06-02, 07:30 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Marias Pass v3.0 coupler problems" Hi Nicholas:You exceeded the coupler forces specified in the *.eng file of one of the locos that you were using. ( I am assuming you broke a loco coupler ). The physics in the *.eng file are listed under "coupling" and look like this: ( sample is Dash9-44CW ) Coupling (
Type ( Automatic )
Spring (
Stiffness ( 1e6N/m 5e6N/m )
Damping ( 1e6N/m 1e6N/m )
Break ( 1.1e7N 1.1e7N )
r0 ( 20cm 30cm )
)

Velocity ( 0.1m/s )Notice the "Break" entry above. I suppose that you could edit this number on each of your locos, but it would be easier if you just didn't exceed the the coupler forces by being very careful with train slack. Lashing all of those different types of units together may also be causing part of your problem. The loco physics need to be fairly well matched with each other, or they become part of the problem instead of part of the solution. I think that you can also turn off "broken couplers" somewhere, but I forget how. You might try the Engine forum if you don't get the answer you are looking for here.Try switching your lead engine in the activity editor to solve your sound problem. Not all of the sound files work the way they are supposed to, and editing the *.sms and *.wav files is no picnic. I just switch loco lead positions to get to the sounds that I prefer. ( Try the "Sound" forum for a more specific answer. )Quite a learning curve to this program .. sheeeshoboe Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-06-02, 04:21 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Marias Pass v3.0 coupler problems" The Cutbank, Piegan, etc couple breaking problems have been somewhat extensively covered here since the beginning. One can set the coupler break force to 5 or more (~1.6 is correct) and that will overcome the "bug". A recent thread indicated Kuju is unable to reproduce the problem and thus a fix is not in the update. A search will probably come up with more threads than you would care to review on coupler breaking problems.Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-06-02, 10:49 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Marias Pass v3.0 coupler problems" I too have noticed odd things with the external engine sounds in multi-engine consists. It seems like only the front engine cranks up, but the others idle (in sound...they smoke and pull like they are working). The same is true for some helpers. I seem to recall the SD40 just idles as a helper. It must be something in the .sms files for these guys, but good luck trying to figure out what is going on in those!
