Feb-01-02, 12:09 PM (EST) "DEM vs. DTED" What,in a nutshell, is the difference between DEM and the DTED (Digital Terrain Elevation Data) mapping systems, and can DTED data be converted for use in route construction?
(Canada uses DTED for its digital mapping).
Thanx

Feb-02-02, 00:01 AM (EST) 1. "RE: DEM vs. DTED" As I understand it DTED was developed for military applications and so included data pertinet to military operations. MicroDem will work with DTED. You may need to check the MDhelp files for info on dealing with DTED. I've not yet worked with them myself, but the process should be similar to working with DEM.

Feb-02-02, 11:42 AM (EST) 3. "RE: DEM vs. DTED" DTED is the trademarked name for the US Defense Department's digital elevation model (DEM), a generic term (as is DTM, digitial terrain model). DTED 0 is available free on the WWW (as are the roughly equivalent GLOBE and GTOPO30), but pretty low resolution. DTED 1 and 2 are restricted to US military users, but level 1 should be out, worldwide, "soon", from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, and be the cat's meow. The first samples (all US) have just been posted on a USGS server, and MICRODEM will display them.DTED implies a very specific binary format. The Canadian use of DTED is unfortunate, as the actual format is USGS (US Geological Survey) ASCII, about three--four times more verbose as real DTED.
