Jan-31-02, 06:52 PM (EST) "Where do I get info on real life route grades??" I would like to begin a route in Wisconsin based on actual track plans, but I don't know where to get information on the prototypes track grades along the route. I don't simply want to make everything flat. Has anyone found a good source for information? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-01-02, 09:58 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Where do I get info on real life route grades??" KSR;Here is a place with track charts, you will have to pay but I don't think the cost is that bad. I've gotten 4 books for the IC from here. They come in 3 ring binders and the price includes shipping. www.trainsite.8m.comCrow357; DEM has nothing to do with the grade of the track. Now of course DEM will get the scenery at the right elevation, but the track may be 5 feet above the surronding terrain or cut into it. KSR needs both DEM and actual track elevation, which he will get on the track charts from the railroad.

Feb-01-02, 10:57 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Where do I get info on real life route grades??" Hmmm, good point David. I hadn't thought of that. Guess that makes my current route unreleasable because I've been following the terrain and using overheads from terraserver. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-01-02, 11:05 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Where do I get info on real life route grades??" Unreleasable? Not on your life. Of course it is releasable. Just because your track doesn't have the "build up" under it doesn't mean that it is unreleasable. Look at Marias!.

Feb-01-02, 11:08 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Where do I get info on real life route grades??" Lawrence;I've dealt with the guy for about 5 years, first time before he had a website. If you ordered stuff today, my guess is you will have it by next Wednesday. He has always been very quick and responds to question via email. For example, I needed to know if a certain town was in a division book of the IC, he checked for me and got back with me. Now of course I can only say things about the IC track charts and what they have on them. Can't speak to other railroads and their level of detail. David Klemm

That bit of info was practically worth the price of admission by itself. <g>I guess I'll have to order one of these binders to take a look at it.I'm not sure if I'll ever do a real route, but I'm finding it helps to know more about the process just so that I can make intelligent observations/comments.Thanks, David!Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
