Jan-31-02, 11:07 AM (EST) "The amazing exploding switch problem..." I've read a few other posts about how the entire sim will crash when you throw a particular switch...but I thought that the problem there was that you created some kind of loop or something. Well, here is my track layout so far:
The bad switch is circled, and the two black dots below it are not switches. There are no loops at all. All of the sudden, when I throw the troublesome switch from left (it's a Y switch) to right when coming from the direction of the arrow, the entire sim crashes without even a chance to brag to Bill about it. I've ran this same track layout for many days, and have not changed the switches at all...the only edits I've made have been to track elevation/grade. But now...it suddenly can't handle that switch. Any ideas? Thanks. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-31-02, 08:15 PM (EST) 1. "RE: The amazing exploding switch problem..." I have had bad experiences with the Y-switch placed like yours in a main line of my routes. Better put it on spurs, sidings, or whatever, keeping it away from the main line. In any case, the Y-switch is a potential source of trouble no matter where you place it. Better use normal switches. What is the situation with that switch at the far left: is it the last track section or does it have more tracks attached to its head? If it is the last, it may also be the cause of your problem.Michael Vone

Feb-01-02, 00:57 AM (EST) 3. "RE: The amazing exploding switch problem..." Hmmm...well, 2 votes against the Y, I'll get rid of them (there's 2 in this layout). And yes, there's a straight at the end of the switch, I caught that warning before. But thanks for the reminder. Strange that this layout was working fine until all of the sudden..but I guess that's the whole problem. thanks for the help Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-31-02, 11:20 PM (EST) 2. "RE: The amazing exploding switch problem..." Hi,
I have never had any luck with Y switches no matter where I place them. I have made many posts on this subject. I had many problems with a route where I used Y switches, and it took me forever to realize that the Y switch was causing the problem. After several TDB rebuilds (I had to do the TDB rebuilds to even be able to SELECT the Y switch to delete it) and removing ALL my Y Switches, I haven't had a single track-related problem since.Jeff Leslie

That track section on the left does not have a piece attached to the base, if it did there would be two black dots instead of one.
Every time you throw a switch you create a new path for the train. Every time a new path is created, the path tracing routine in the game traces out the entire new path, stopping when it hits the blue "end of the line/derailment point" pole. No blue pole, no end of path, second star on the right and straight on til morning, off to Never-never land. Switches are unique in that the base does not have a built in blue pole, so must be covered.

Feb-01-02, 05:47 PM (EST) 7. "RE: The amazing exploding switch problem..." That's a good point, about the dots...I was absolutely SURE that there was a straight section attached on the end. In fact, I'm QUITE positive it's there...but perhaps I need to rebuild the track db??? It was in the RE, but not in the activity editor. Strange. Anyway, I did replace all those switchs, and things seem to work fine. Dont remember what else I did... Oh well, thanks. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-01-02, 10:43 AM (EST) 6. "RE: The amazing exploding switch problem..." Yes, Rich I know you use them I've seen them in EMRR, and it drives me nuts wondering why everybody but me can get them to work. I always make sure I don't leave any red poles uncovered, so I know it's not that. I haven't messed with Y points in a while, maybe it's time to go back in and have a second look...Jeff Leslie
