Jan-30-02, 11:38 PM (EST) "GM&O WESTERN DIVISION Route Builders Guild in operation" GM&O WESTERN DIVISION Route Builders Guild has come to order! The group of four artists, each in a different field of MSTS creation, have come together to create the Western Division of the GM&O. GM&O is a "fallen flag" line that provided both passenger and freight movement from Chicago to St. Louis to Kansas City to Memphis, Savannah, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and New Orleans. The Western Division consisted of lines from Bloomington, Il, to Kansas City, Mo. (with branch lines running off of it).All total, the estimate trackage for the Western Division is between 300-400 miles. The four artists are: Paul Fowler -- Skinner and Territorial Expert
Lawrence Kellie -- Route Builder
Trouble Pryor -- Shape/Object Creator
Craig TopDog! -- Shape/Object CreatorPhase 1 of the project is to create the section from Iles, Il., to Murrayville, Il.--approximately 35 miles--called the AIRLINE!The goal is to create a prototypical route which will be able to be used to bring back to life the GM&O. And this route will be based on actual historical documents to make it as real-life as possible.Keep watching for updates AND for requests for help. All four of us know our limits, we know what we can do, and we know that there will be aspects which will require others to become involved in this project. All 'board! The GM&O is building up steam!.

For example: lay the track for several tiles, hand them over to the scenery folks while the track layer continues working on other tiles. It seems to me this approach may work since only the tiles and world tiles are updated during the scenery process.Does anyone have any thoughts on this? If this is the case then one might be able to use CVS or other version control software to do route development.Brian LaVelle

Jan-31-02, 10:51 AM (EST) 4. "RE: GM&O WESTERN DIVISION Route Builders Guild in operation" Hiya Lawrence. Glad to see the route is getting started. Me and Paul have been talkin the past 2 days. Good thing I have a burner then.lol. And you spelt Topdog the way I intended to spell it but left the caps lock on. I'm also building a switcher ( not the 0-4-0 but another one ) which hopefully can also be used. You guys just let me know what buildings you need. Are you going to use DEM btw? Seems to me like it will be easier. Just my opinion though. I'm only the object makier what do I know.lmao. Talk to you, Paul, and Trouble soon. Jan-31-02, 11:30 AM (EST) 6. "RE: GM&O WESTERN DIVISION Route Builders Guild in operation" Trouble and I are dealing with this on the IC route. The answer is it depends. Adding roads can't be done by both at the same time because of what it does to rdb file. Adding static scenery appears to be ok.Our approach is to let one person work on the route while the other does prep work, like making objects, getting photos and so on. Then switch roles and go on.David Klemm

Jan-31-02, 03:06 PM (EST) 7. "RE: GM&O WESTERN DIVISION Route Builders Guild in operation" On a related note Oudrun has put a lot of work into creating a project management website for Norwegian routes using PostNuke. There's individual display pages for each project with public commment areas. Project members can submit work reports with status and version codes. There are also other features that help project teams set tasks, deadlines, etcIf you want to see more take a look at: http://hunden.org/klubber/msts_NO_Design/.

...it's very exciting Lawrence...to see it started!
By the way to all who cast their eyes on the E unit on the "AIR LINE" as you see it here...GM&O DID IN FACT run detour passenger trains around several derailments on the GM&O mainline to St. Louis down the AIR LINE...so to see passenger trains..especially E-units on the AIR LINE was not uncommon..not to mention an occasional 880 series passenger F3 pulling the Doodlebug when the gas electric died on them on the GM&O WESTERN DIVISION.........KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK LAWRENCE! Jan-31-02, 11:07 PM (EST) 8. "RE: GM&O WESTERN DIVISION Route Builders Guild in operation" I am excited to hear of this project. Wish I had a skill to contribute. Grew up on the line 35 miles north of Bloomington on Rt.66 a little town called Pontiac. It is going to be great to have the opportunity to revisit the line. Thanks to all involved.
