Jan-24-02, 05:41 PM (EST) 7. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" Why? DEM-EX works very well. Of what I have seen of Jak's concepts, he looks at where there is a lack and fills it. There are currently several tools to model the terrain, and I understand that JohnCS, the creator of DEM-EX, has been working on an upgrade. I can only forsee that this will get better. No insult to Jak, but I personally don't see the need for another participant in the DEM world.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

It was a joke, you know. I said that because two dem extractors are out about at the same time, tstools, and demex. And there is TSTerraform which will have the advantage to be free, for people who have not to much money (and demex 0.6). I did not say that these softwares were bad ! Jan-25-02, 11:20 AM (EST) 29. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" And I didn't say that you said they were bad.My point is this: As you have brought out, there already exist several tools for DEM (BTW, I haven't read anything about JohnCS charging for his new DEM-EX in the forums except what you have written here), Jak and his crew could spend their time better, in my opinion, in looking in an area that does NOT have any alternative.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-24-02, 05:38 PM (EST) 6. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" I remember asking my father-in-law several years ago if he would teach me to drive one of his logging trucks. I was working for him at the time, he is a logging contractor. He had a very simple answer, "No."When I asked why not, he responded with, "It costs too much. Every logging truck driver that I know, including myself, has lost the truck on a hill, thereby, totalling the truck. It just plain costs too much."Very good point!I also remember my first week working, operating a line skidder, for him. I started on a Wednesday. The following Wednesday, I rolled the skidder. Didn't hurt it any. We just flopped it back on its feet, checked the cylinders to make sure they didn't fill with oil, fired it up, and went back to work. Of course, I was a little humbler after that. Finally, I remember one day he told me, "Go down that trail and skid in that big Spruce." My response was, "What's a Spruce?"So what do all these little anecdotes have to do with MSTS and the Route Editor. Plenty. To learn anything that is of worth, it takes effort. It takes failure. It takes routes crashing. It takes deleting routes. It takes skill. It takes sufficient computer resources to counteract the tendency to crash. It takes experience! So, much of what I am going to write has already been written. And for that reason, I do not like to repeat what has been written. But with a new group of MSTS route builders....First, have an adequate computer. When I first got MSTS I was running with a 667 mHz, 256 RAM. Now according to the the box for MSTS, that is a very adequate computer. But there is one little thing that is not written anywhere (that I am aware of). Those requirements are for the Sim, NOT the Route Editor!!! I had trouble just like you and others have expressed. I upgraded to 384 MB RAM, and things got a lot better. I upgraded to 768, and I can say that I cannot remember having had the Route Editor crash on me since upgrading to 768. Does the Sim run better. Not really. For that, I would assume that my CPU speed and video card may be the culprits. So, get adequate RAM.Second, start small. Make a one tile route. You can put a lot of track, scenery, etc., on a one-tile route. Do a search, clicking the Archive checkbox, using "My little 1x1" as your search term to see one example.Third, save often, but not just save often, but make sure that when you save, NOTHING is selected. In other words, before you save, click on the ground. Deselect everything. In fact, some people have gone so far as to move the camera so they are pointing to the sky before saving. Save often.Fourth, make backups. I backup Tapiola every day or two. I have the entire route zipped into a file. Then when I want to make a new backup, I make a copy of the latest zipped file in the Tapiola route directory, rename it to today's date, select all the files and directories except it, and drag it onto it. When WinZip opens, I choose Update, Maximum, and include full pathways. Since I am only updating the few files I have worked on over the last couple of days, it doesn't take very long. (The zip file is about 450 MB.) When I have two or three archived on the harddrive, I burn them onto CDs. One day's backup per CD. Make Backups.Fifth--black screen. I am certain you have had this happen. When you select a new object, the Route Editor window turns black. At that time, especially if you have, say, under 512 MB RAM, save your work, exit out of Train Sim (not just the RE), and restart Train Sim. It has been my experience that you do NOT need to reboot. I have a memory monitor, which allows me at any given moment to see how much RAM is available. Exiting Train Sim and restarting Train Sim will recapture that memory. (Of course, even though my computer is on all day long, I reboot about once a day anyway.)If you follow these little points, your experience with the Route Editor should be a happier one. The Route Editor is actually a very good tool. You can do quite a lot with it. And one of the founding participants (he worked for MS) in the train-sim Route Forum stated that there was no reason to believe that KUJU used anything other than what we have. And he was create routes, I believe, 9 months before MSTS was released! If you follow the above points, especially making sure that you have adequate computer resources, your experience will be a good one. Look at all the routes that have been created. KUJU created ~600 miles of routes. Jim Ward, Rich Garber, David Klemm, and others who I don't have their name on the tip of my fingers, have all created routes with this tool. Just like driving a logging truck, operating a skidder, or, may I be so bold as to point out, operating a real-world locomotive takes time to learn, so the Route Editor. And in the process, you will have crashes, you will want to throw the whole software out, you will have black screens, you will have corrupt databases, you will have all of these. But just as a logging truck driver looses a rig, it is all part of learning.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-24-02, 09:14 PM (EST) 12. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" SHEESH!I'd like to see a more user friendly route editor too... And I'm not disputing anything Lawrence said. They are all about the same as I have observed. As I have upgraded my system, things have improved. But, I would shell out a lot of money for a route editor. The same amount as I did for TrainSim? Maybe. I get as much enjoyment building my models as I do running trains in the Sim. I have to assume I would get as much enjoyment building routes as I do building trains and buildings. I use 3dCanvas and paid $50.00 for it. I probably enjoy creating as much as playing. That said... I am getting close to the point where I have everything built that I will want to use on my route when decide to start. Hopefully, Route Editing will have progressed as far as modeling already has by the time I start building my route. It is a reasonable expectation. To the folks at howintheworld... Thanks for Sky2 and RouteControl. I recently purchased it. Not so much because I needed to, I only use the consist fixing part right now, but because I think, next to TrainArtisan, you have contributed some of the highest quality products for TrainSim experience. I hope that the money talks and encourages you to make more software. And Lawrence, I have a lot of posts, so is it OK for me to speak up? How'd this thread get so negative so fast? Mike

"RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" cnwforever;Every one is allowed there opinoin, even you I'll grant, but your newness to this site suggest you may have opened your mouth before engaging your brain. Look at Lawrence's post count, he's been here since the very early days, as have I. What we have today is light years ahead of what we had in June last year. Partly based on our knowledge of the RE. And yes, Jak makes wonderful things and fills in the holes we have in MSTS.I was like many at first when I started with the RE about the difficulty with it and complained, but I kept going, learning and understanding it. Now, as Lawrence says, it is fine. I understand it and when I get and "error" I now know what "I" did to cause it and can fix it.All his tips are valid and a must if you want to protect your work.David Klemm

Jan-24-02, 11:03 PM (EST) 16. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" Sheesh!Look you all, Lawrence said absolutely the correct thing to what essentially what some of you are putting on paper incorrectly. What you are asking for in a new route editor is incorrect. What you mean to say, is you want a more user-friendly interface and to have it better idiot-proofed. Changing the editor out for a new one won't make your job any easier because the building blocks of route building will still be the same. So, Lawrence is right in everything he said when he spelled out the best way to get along with the editor as it is. In fact, there wasn't one thing I could or would add to it. If you want to change out the Route Editor like you are asking, then you're asking Kuju to redesign the sim from ground up. I don't think they're going to do that and I don't think that's what you want. Redesigning the Interface to make it more accomodating is a perfectly legitite request and even makes better sense when worded that way.The second part of this is the bug issues. Solving the bug issues is something Jak can't help you with unless he's got the inside track on how Kuju did everything. You'll have to wait until Kuju issues the 2nd version of MSTS if not a patch.Just wandering in and out of threads this evening while taking a break from route building, I came across this thread and it was fine, up to and including LK's first post. It was the response after his that this thread went 'downhill.' Oh, and one last thing CNWforever... Nels will give you your previous password if you ask for it. Jan-24-02, 11:58 PM (EST) 17. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" Rich,I agree with you, but I'd like to see a better route editor myself. With features like the ability to drag a stretch of track to change the length, curvature, etc., to custom-build switches at any desired configuration, and so forth. The reality is that it ain't gonna happen due to the limitations of the underlying code. Oh well, we can still dream... My current dream is to hit PowerBall. That's about as realistic as getting that new route editor. Maybe with MSTS v 5.0.Nick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-25-02, 11:26 AM (EST) 30. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" No, I don't "rely on 'post count.'"My point about bring up his post count was simply this, he implied by his message that he had been here a long time, had read more than this one post of mine, and therefore could make a legitimate conclusion--though if you do a random sampling of my posts, I don't think you can come to his conclusion. And whenever anyone comes up with that sort of blasting at may, my first action is to determine the legitimacy of what has been written, that is, *has* he been here long enough to have read and digested many of my posts? With "0" posts listed, that is very unlikely. Hence, I brought that point out.If it had of been you, with your 50 posts (as it says) who posted that, I probably would not even have mentioned the number of posts. Jan-25-02, 09:29 AM (EST) 23. "RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" I personally think the Route Editor is a great tool. Flight Simulator doesn't come with anything that can do what the Route Editor does. And if anyone can remember back to Flightsim 4 when the program did come with a scenery editor, it wasn't nearly as good as the Route Editor that we have with Train Simulator. While I would have preferred and editor that worked in a manner similar to the one in Railroad Tycoon II, the editor that Microsoft gave us is a powerful tool. If you take the time to learn how to use it you can create pretty much whatever you want. The only real two problems I have with the current Route Editor is that Microsoft didn't give us access to all of the objects that they used in their routes in the Route Editor and that there is no way to directly use DEM data in the Geometry extractor that shipped with the program. I've heard that someone is working on creating a new ref file to include all the objects which will solve the one problem. As far as finding a way to use DEM data directly in the Route Geometry Extractor, I think only Microsoft will be able to fix that with a patch. But overall the program is great. You just need to be willing to invest the time to do it. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: I dream of RouteBuilder" After usuing RE for some three months now, I have concluded that RE, in and of itself, provided you use a good PC, with lots of memory, is not so bad. What is bad, though, is that if something does occur, which glitches up your data, recovery is at best hit-or-miss, usually miss, making VERY FREQUENT backups ESSENTIAL. Even so, it is a little disconcerting to work for 3 or 4 hours, and then lose it and have to fall back to the last full backup. So, as far as I am concerned, the weak link is the OLE database system. Mess up anything, and it is all messed up, and as even MS admitted, OLE was never intended to handle the massive amount of data required for a train simulation. Some utilities that would recovered botched databases, quickly, easily, and correctly most of the time would be more useful at this point than another route editor.J.
