Jan-22-02, 11:19 PM (EST) "Showing of Objects" I have the following Questions:
I am building a route and have found the following problem.I placed multiple forest along a long stretch of track.
When approaching the forest line from a distance it will not show until I'am almost there. Al the graphics sliders are set to full.
After I placed a few single trees in front of the forest line I noticed that the trees will appear from a distance but still not the forest, again until I am almost there. How does MSTS load and display the scenery?
Are there any considerations when placing scenery?
Are gantries affecting the frame rate?
This route is set in Holland and at the moment I am using the swedish gantries, I think the are the closest to the dutch ones.Currently my average frame rate is round the 40 - 50 mark, sometimes dropping to 30. However when I approach some cyties It drops for a fraction of a second to 17 and then back up again.I have also encountered an other problem whilst testing the route with traffic placed on it.
Driving into a city there is little stutter and when i stop at the station the clock in the cab is ok but the time entered in the train schedule display (actual arrival time) is suddenly two minutes behind! Time warping. My PC spec is: P4 1.7G - 1G Ram - Graphics card: Asus Gforce2 MX400 64 MB Vram. - Sound card: Creative 5.1 live platinum.
I am running under windows ME with directX 8.1
When I run the directX test everything is fine, however when it displays the spinning cube I can see it but it is spinning at mach speed.
Another problem i have is that it does not matter what I do but the graphics card will not function normally, when running games, at any screen resolution under 1024x768. When i try this the graphics are showing double. Thanks

Jan-23-02, 03:15 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Showing of Objects" I think, from my observations in the sim and oute editor, that the large forest sets are "flat". If you notice, the trees are all constructed as "x"'s or 2 perpendicular planes with the textures painted on. The large blocks appear to be painted on either a single plane, or on planes that are at a much smaller angle than 90 degrees. If you set them back from the tracks and "fake" the edge and front with a few real tree objects, it will give the illusion of a large mass of trees. Model railroaders use this trick quite a bit. I'm not positive about this, it just looks that way to me. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 05:21 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Showing of Objects" Objects are showing, depending on the detail level set in the shape's data file. If the detail level specified is higher than the datail level you set MSTS to, the object will not be displayed. Furthermore, every object shape file has properties in which is specified what the maximum distance is from which the object can be seen. The drop in frame rate you mention can be due to loading of files which causes the game to slow down for a moment.Off-topic remark: Dutch gantries are available. I saw them in the downloads section of a German MSTS-site (can't remember the site name just now). They will certainly make your route look more realistic. Which route in Holland are you building?

Jan-24-02, 00:01 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Showing of Objects" I was building a route in the North. My first attempt was running from Zwolle to Emmen, but it crashed.
My second attempt just crashed last night, this route was from Groningen to Meppel and Leeuwarden.
I have just posted an other topic about the crashes.Jack Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
