Jan-22-02, 11:09 PM (EST) "Grades on Whitefish Route....need serious Fixing...." LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-02 AT 11:11 PM (EST)Well....I'm slowly getting fed up with the grades on the Whitefish route...as there is NO 6% grades anywhere near this area. The maximum grade is 1.1% (Eastboound) and 1.0% Westbound. Now, I'm not trying to be picky...but you can't expect to run a train on this route without stalling or having a runaway...breaking a coupler At a siding...with a train waiting there (that poor crew...hope they pulled through when that autorack slammed into the train.....) This is the only problem that I see with the route, and I give you great honors for your time. I'd be willing to help you get any kind of information that I can on this route if you would like to release a Version 2.Chuck..this is a very very nice route, but please, please work on the grades on this route, It would be great to maintain 60mph. Check out the new BNSF timetable (Northwest Division) for the grade profiles, they give you the siding name, location, altitude, current milepost of grade/location, crossover speed, Detectors, Feet of Sidings, grade percentages, and more. It is very useful.Or, you can have the "Grade Specialist" (Bob and PaulD) work on it if you don't mind Thanks alot for the route, hope to see others!! (Powder River Basin maybe )Brian E. Bundridge

Jan-24-02, 10:14 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Grades on Whitefish Route....need serious Fixing...." I am working on Seattle to -120 longitude(near Cashmere, WA) now. I believe that you live in Seattle. The cascades, it turns out, are a lot more interesting than the rockies. I get all my info from topographical maps. I make up the siding names. To me this is just theater. You guys can do whatever with the routes. Just give me credit as a co-author.

Jan-24-02, 02:14 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Grades on Whitefish Route....need serious Fixing...." hey Chuck, Great that you are working on that route!!! I'd love to do the Seattle-Wenatchee (to Alcoa Steel) but the RE tends to lock up...so I'm stuck until I decide to get some more DDR Ram... (upgrading to 768MB DDR SDRAM)With the new BNSF timetables (If your doing Seattle-Cashmere) You'll only need the Northwest Division. I was really surprised that the timetables include the grade profiles, I just wish they included the grade crossings...which would make placing roads alot more prototypical. If you need any pics of Interbay, I have a TON I could send you. Let me know, but I'll need them back I hope you didn't assume that post as an attack to you...I only wanted to get it fixed But since you'll let the others work on it...I'll see what I can do to it... Jan-24-02, 02:20 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Grades on Whitefish Route....need serious Fixing...." You should upgrade if you can swing it money wise. I have all the road and grade infor from the topo maps. Siding names I just pick up from the towns nearby. I have to tell people though that this route editing or building is just about the most complex thing I have ever done, and I have a Ph.D. in engineering. The lack of manuals is the problem. But this forum has all the answers.

Unless downloading 24K topo maps at this site are free, you might look into downloading the same maps from <www.gisdatadepot.com>.You're looking for 24K DRG (Digital Raster Graphics) maps, indexed by state, then county. It's not a fast download, but their cheap, as in FREE!

Jan-26-02, 08:16 AM (EST) 15. "RE: Grades on Whitefish Route....need serious Fixing...." Terraserver also has USGS topo maps, you can go back and forth from aerial photo to topo too. I have the Topo USA also, and although handy, it is much less accurate then the USGS maps, showing fewer sidings, poor placement relationships between roads and RR. I am presently re-doing a section of my branch line, originally working from Topo USA, as too many things are off.Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-25-02, 06:00 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Grades on Whitefish Route....need serious Fixing...." Chuck, get yourself Delorme's Topo USA program, this will help out quite a bit. I've been using it with great success. You should also go to BNSF website and click on the employees tab. search around until you get to where you can download the Timetables online in PDF format, that will save you a lot of time too. Right now I'm waiting for the next version of DEMEX to come out with the distant mountain options, then I will add that to my current route as well as the rest of the funnel. Also, I'll probably steal your tiles from your Whitefish to Sandpoint route and add them to the end of my route, then I'll do the track all the way back to Whitefish including the UP tracks. But that's all way off in the future. I'm taking a different approch to route building, in that I'm doing exact trackwork and custom buildings and bridges. Needless to say my way takes a lot longer. But the end product will be better than anything out there, including the routes that came with the game.Ted Curphey
