Jan-22-02, 11:55 AM (EST) "Route editing ettiquette" Ok, I've done some experimenting with editing a route, and so far I'm pleased with the results. Unfortunately, I don't have some all-encompassing overall route plan...just for one SCENE in a route. I think it'd be a pretty neat scene. So, the question is...should I create an entirely new route just for this scene and their related activities? Or is it acceptable to edit someone else's route (not the stock ones with MSTS, they're kinda bland), and give them proper credit? Or should I ask permission first? I don't wanna step on any toes. I think I could create this "scene" in a week or so, but if I have to build a route from scratch....ho boy. MSTS v. 5 will be out by then..... Also, it seems a new route would be kind of a big download just for this one scene. Anyway, help a newbie out, please. Aaaaa, dunno what to do. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 11:59 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Route editing ettiquette" Why not just do a short 1 or 2 tile route to accomodate this scene? Kinda like a bookshelf model railroad idea. Take a look at some of the earlier routes, they was only 1 tile.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

With most Freeware, the creator still owns the copyright to the work included, unless he/she specifically waives this right. Often, authors do this by saying, "These files are released in the Public Domain, do whatever the hell you want with them," or something to that effect . Most authors would take great offense at someone modifying their work and rereleasing it, credit or no credit.Your best shot would be to do your own small route, or start working on your scene and expanding from there to create a larger route (if your scene would be pretty, but not very exciting by itself, for example).troub

Jan-22-02, 12:30 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Route editing ettiquette" Do your own. As Rich said, one or two tiles.Notice that there is a new route coming out that is only 23km long. That is not very long. So small routes have their place.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 03:27 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Route editing ettiquette" Ok, I think I'm inspired now to give it a try. But some clarifications, please...This whole "DEM" thing I keep hearing...if I'm correct, that's some way of importing information directly into the route extractor editor, and it makes already made terrain? Is that correct? But that's not required...I can just go in, grab a couple small blocks of land, and start at it? Then go to the route editor and raise it from there to look like actual land. I've looked for a more comprehensive tutorial on how to do this, but so far no luck. I guess there's always trial and lots of error. Now then...once I've made my little two square scene, and I later want to add to it...I can just add more blocks? Do I go back to the extractor and go from there? Thanks for all the help. In a way, I was eager to make the scene, but didn't want to have to wait to create the LAND. Now I've got to really dig up some creativity...durnit. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 03:54 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Route editing ettiquette" You have a correct understanding. DEM is to take a specific area and give it accurate terrain. If you doing 2 tiles in a fictional area, just modify the terrain by yourself.Personally I wouldn't want you to modify the route I'm working on and then release it. It is a prototypical route and I, and I'm sure my co-conspirator Trouble Pryor, feel that it should stay that way. Of course what you do to it and keep on your HD is up to you. But that is not to be released.David Klemm

Jan-22-02, 05:54 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Route editing ettiquette" If you want to make a new route, then model it on some geographic area that u like; don't leach off of someone else's work. for example, i'm building my first route based on the rr in ventura county, calif. it is a southern pacific route, but inside xnard the ventura country rr runs. i got the maps from topozone.com. then i went to mapmart.com where i bought Digital Raster Graphics maps to get good details on the rr that included yard and siding track. then, best of all, i used rgarber's "dem tutorial" to import all the right dems and set the tiles up so now i'm laying track, designing the cities and placing objects. my route is about 180 tiles. not sure on the mileage yet, but for a beginning route, it is challenging. i'll release after i'm done, which may be a few months from now..heehee.SkyRat
