Jan-21-02, 07:12 PM (EST) "Who's working on what?" Just wondering what routes everyone is working on? Anyone working on any routes in Wisconsin other than the Reedsburg route? I'm slowly making progress on my Wisconsin Central Chicago Subdivision. Yes, you read my last sentence right, i'm working on the WC Chicago Sub. I'm basing the timeframe on early to mid 2001 hence the reason why I didn't say Canadian National Chicago Sub. I am currently working on the "Byron Hill" portion of the route for those of you who know the territory. I'm not working to get an exact, 100%, duplicate of the route but just a feel for the Wisconsin Central operations and trackage.XY0981

Jan-22-02, 01:34 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Who's working on what?" I'm working on the Soo line (and WC) line) from Ashland WI, down through Marengo Jct, Mellen, and then to Bessemer MI. I've built the line from Ashland to Hurley, including the yard at Hoyt, the Montreal mine complex, and I'm presently debugging the ore yard in Ashland. No scenery other than the DEM data. I'm going to scenic it for appx. 1945-1955. In other words, a lot of deforested area. I gotta look and see if anybody uploaded a deforested patch The present DEM tiles go appx. 15 miles south of Mellen, and I haven't decided how far I want to build that portion yet. Probably just enough for an activity to go through Mellen, as the time freight power came north out of Stevens Point, terminated in Ashland, did a turn to Hoyt or Bessemer and back, and then headed back south on the night time freight. The Lake States also terminated in Ashland until I believe the late 1950s. When I get things a little farther along, I'll upload the file. Unfortunately, MSTS is "so much to learn, and so little time". If you want to try your hand at this, I can burn you a CD and send it to you snail mail. I wouldn't mind another tester.
regards,
Jerry Zeman

Jan-22-02, 08:46 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Who's working on what?" I am working on 2 routes. The Louisville and Indiana, a shortline from Indianapolis, IN to Louisville, KY. This route will include over 106 miles of track and will include several even smaller shortlines and the Indianapolis area. Currently 60 of 106 miles of track are completed.Conrail in Ohio in the 1980's. This is based off of Zone Track maps found on the internet. Currently this includes the Urbana and Springfield, OH areas. I am not sure which directions I will expand on this route.Follow the progress and become a beta tester at:

Jan-22-02, 09:33 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Who's working on what?" I'm working on the Bodiddly RR (development name). It's a hybrid of Allan McClelland's V&O (HO Layout) and a freelanced route through the hills of Ohio (DEM). I'm guessing but it will be in excess of over 120 miles with passenger and freight activity. The theme behind the railroad is a rate war. An existing railroad (V&O) is now in competition with a faster more streamlined railroad. The focuses aren't the same. The V&O is primarily freight moving and hence the trackage is set up for same. The newer route (not named) has went to great expense to keep the grades flatter and more tunnels and bridges to accomodate a smoother run. So far anyway.... Please see my site for updates; look for the Bodiddly link.www.edmfamily.com/msts/index.htmRich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 10:18 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Who's working on what?" I am working on extending the NEC north. I have it done up to the North Philadelphia station. I was originally going to release the track only as a beta. Instead I decided to wait to release it as I add in all the scenery along the route as well. My first release will be done soon though Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 04:32 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Who's working on what?" I too am working on the WC, .... only it isn't the WC anymore. The route covers the Eastern half of Michigans Upper Peninsula, From Gladstone to Marquette, Sault St. Marie, and St. Ignace. It isn't the WC because I made a minor change to history. In 1910, the Manistique Railway went bankrupt, and a deal for a group of investors to purchase the railway fell through. In my scenario, the investors purchased the railroad, and were very succesfull. They purchased the old DSS&A and renamed everthing to the " Superior South Shore". The Wisconsin Central never got the lines from the Soo, because the Soo Line never got started. ( I'm Sorry Soo Fans, It was the investors fault, not mine. )I created all this history to justify a route along the shore of Lake Superior from the Soo to Marquette. The rest of the track in the U.P. is close to what now exists. You will be happy to note that the WC ( along with the CN ) has trackage rights in certain areas, and I see their locos passing by from time to time.Oh ... The town of Seney became the Hub for freight operations and Interchange, and Grand Marais on Lake Superior became the major Northern Interchange of passenger traffic from New England and Eastern Canada to The American and Canadian West stealing a lot of traffic from Chicago because of delays there due to congestion and a flood in 1913 when the Chicago river backed up because ............ Gee .. I could go on and on ... oboe Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 04:50 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Who's working on what?" Anybody working on anything in Indiana (besides the L&I)?
My CSX/Conrail Indianapolis Line project is basically non-existent at this point...I'm too busy with college and everything. If anyone else is interested in making this route, I've got lots of info to share. The Indianapolis Line starts at IU Interlocking in downtown Indy (west of IU, it's the St. Louis Line) and extends northeast through Lawrence, McCordsville, Fortville, Pendleton, Anderson, Daleville, Yorktown, and Muncie, then east to Union City (Indiana/Ohio state line), and connects with the former Conrail Chicago Line at Berea, OH. Jan-22-02, 09:10 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Who's working on what?" I've got about 30 miles of the Central Indiana Western from Anderson west. Built it as a testbed route and haven't looked at it in several months, but it was my first route, and has some sentimental value as well, since I grew up in Anderson close to the NYC line. Currently I'm doing the D&RGW through the Royal Gorge and across Tennessee Pass. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 10:47 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Who's working on what?" Gave it some thought, but decided to do Colorado railroading, since I've lived here for 25 years. Most of what I rmember of the CIW was in the 50's and 60's where it ran west just north of 25th St. And the downtown terminal, such as it was.I actually grew up in Edgewood. Graduated from Madison Heights HS in '65. It's now Anderson HS, unfortunately. My dad owned a coal and building supply company right next to the NYC tracks downtown. Jan-22-02, 04:58 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Who's working on what?" LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-02 AT 05:01 PM (EST)I was working on the CSX line from Atlanta to Chattanooga, but my uncontrolable quest for perfection 'bout drove me crazy . I've put it aside for quite a while.
I'm still working on Snafu Pass (an unDEMed route) and I'm working on a fantasy route somewhere in the Rockies (DEMed). I was going to attempt the D&RGW line (I think that's right) from Denver to Frisco, but again, I couldn't satisfy my desire.
It's bad enough dealing with my meticulousness in a fantasy route.

I"m currently residing in railroad challenged Gaylord, where the loco whistle blows once a day (maybe) for the old D&M line, running into town and to the Georgia Pacific plant. Grew up in Tawas - we used to call it "Does More Rockin' Than Rollin'" for the Detroit & Mac, and that was way before Chubby Checkers. Back in my childhood you could take a pass train from Alpena to Bay City - you could but you probably wouldn't have done so more than once. Bing

Jan-22-02, 08:01 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Who's working on what?" Hey Bing ..I'm in Rochester, but I'm building a place in Grand Marais for retirement. I've been tracking the old Manistique Railway roadbed up there, but the bears and wolves keep chasing me away. Toivo would have been proud of me.Sometimes I go to Trout Lake and watch the WC do its thing. Saw an Algoma Central F7B hooked up with a couple of SD45s last summer and smoke was pouring out of her. Quite a treat. Also got to see the 2-8-2 from Gladstone with all those heavyweights from every road you could think of. It took water from the creek in Trout Lake, and turned the entire train on the Wye there.East Tawas was my summer stomping ground in the late 50s. I Used to stay at Indian Lake out towards the Lumberman's Monument. I remember the D&M when it was still Steam mixed with a few Alco RS units ( 3s if I remember right )Take care Bing ..oboe Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-24-02, 02:32 AM (EST) 19. "RE: Who's working on what?" LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-02 AT 02:34 AM (EST)I am working on the NS route from Atlanta to Chattanooga. I have given up on being absolutely accurate as it is really impossible. I am just aiming for 'pretty accurate' at this point. I extracted way to much DEM terrain when I started my route, .. I have the terrain for your entire route, the CSX route already extracted if you want it. I am going to have to trim my terrain tiles before posting this route anyway. Actually in theory BOTH routes would fit on the terrain that I have extracted. I've gotten side-tracked (pardon the pun) by Train Sim Modeler but am going to get back to laying track this weekend. I have about 60 miles of the 175 miles done. If anyone has any first hand knowledge of the NS trackage about Atlanta, I could use their help. Particularly Inman Yard and the Intermodal Yard. Track is 98% done. Scenery and objects, who knows, depends on where I draw the line.

Jan-23-02, 08:56 AM (EST) 18. "RE: Who's working on what?" East Tennessee & Western North Carolina. Narrow gauge from Johnson City TN to Boone NC. Narrow gauge was dismantled 1950. Loco went to Tweetsie Railroad amusument park. Some "Broad Gauge" track still in service JC to Elizebethton. Transites the Doe River Gourge...looks a lot like some of the western narrow gauge line but with trees. Plan to match prototype lat / long / elevation as closely as resonablely possible. Line is 66 miles long with stations, mines, lumber mills, logging RR conections.Got MSTS New Years Day. Have been building about ten days. Have six tiles, DEM topo, and about a mile of track. I have also solved LOTS of problems.I like the method of MSTS to eModel trains. I believe some of the other programs got it wrong to eModel a model railroad. Any modeling method has its limitations so modeling a model compounds those limitions. Sure MSTS isn't purfect but if used considering those limitation can accurately represent a train operation in real time and space. After all its not Microsoft Railroad Simulator. Jan-24-02, 01:55 PM (EST) 20. "RE: Who's working on what?" I'm finishing my Hoboken Shore RR. I won't extend it anymore, except maybe some sidings and if I change my mind, I will make the NYS&W branch to Edgewater and the yards at Little Ferry. Just upgraded my machine and the route editor seems to work smoother now(but there's still those annoying pauses with no HD activity). This is from the upcoming beta 5. I used these viaducts to represent the Bergen arches until I get more accurate model.
There seems to be no way to complete this piece, but luckily it's not very essential(but I'd like to complete it):

Jan-25-02, 05:25 PM (EST) 21. "RE: Who's working on what?" Hey Romerails-
I've got the data for Acworth, Allatoona Dam, Burnt Hickory, Cartersville, and Kennesaw. What I could use, at this time, is the Marietta quad (I want to locate Kennesaw Mtn), and maybe the Kingston Quad. That would give me plenty to work on. I'm having enough trouble with this small section (the difference in the lats. and lons.) getting the markers right, but then again, I'm doing it the hard way.
I'm stuck with a dial-up modem (at 26,400), so gathering the info is slow. If you could e-mail the files, it would be faster.
Monday, I'm going to a job on Miami Circle, in Atlanta (at Piedmont, if your familiar with the area). The NS runs by there, about 70 feet from the property line of the job. Two rails. Marta, also, runs right next to the NS line. I've got a couple pics from there, but not good enough for me. I'm going to try to get closer to the tracks next week.
I've got a digital camera. If I get some goods pics, I'll e-mail them to you, if you like.
One thing I've learned; Reality is a myth, in the land of MSTS (I must accept that, I MUST accept that, I, must accept that. Must I?)
Hey Kinnamon-
I haven't given up on the route, just put it aside until I learn more. I'm still trying to gather the info I need.
Nalle- That's a fine lookin' route, you got there. I'd love to run it. Same to you, Enocell, but it looks like you've run into the proverbial "CONTINUOUS LOOP" scenario. Good Luck!!
I've babbled enough.
Later,
Hawk

Jan-25-02, 07:26 PM (EST) 22. "RE: Who's working on what?" I am still working on the north end of the Clinchfield, having completed all of the branches except for a little revision work to do on the upper (now abandoned) end of the Nora Spur, for which I just received good profiles from Yellowdog.I don't have a clue how to distribute this thing, once it is done. I have used the latest version of "allstuff" and I suppose it could be distributed without textures, shapes, etc. since I have not used any that are not in some route of MSTS. However, the world files, and tiles, together will exceed 200mbt.I wonder if anyone has considered turning over completed routes to either MS or a firm such as Abacus so that they (particularly MS) can distribute them as "for pay" add-ons. I note that MS brought out a number of flight-sim add-ons that were originally done by folks like us (maybe some of us for all I know). After this is done, I plan to proceed with the south end. Being an L&N fan, most of my effort after that will focus on the L&N, starting with the main stem, 1st & 2nd divisions (as defined in BLE agreements during the period of 1907-1958 when my beloved and late Uncle, "Oil Can Willy" Eubank was in T&E service). For the uninitiated, that was the main line from Louisville to Nashville. Kind of waiting on the completion of Xtracks which will include slip switches also, because there were two or three manual ones outside the Louisville Terminal, and one powered one in Nashville. I already have the profile for the route, and wish it was not necessary to use so much dynamic track.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
