Jan-22-02, 08:33 AM (EST) 3. "RE: TsTools Version 1.0 Now available - includes SDTS import" With the SDTS import feature, Can you directly read the *.tar.gz (tar, gzip compressed format)? or does one have to decompress the data after download? Thanks,

Jan-22-02, 09:13 AM (EST) 4. "RE: TsTools Version 1.0 Now available - includes SDTS import" The compressed file does need to be unpacked to a directory for TsTools to read it - but the unpacked files can be deleted as soon as each dataset has been imported into TsTools. All of the imported DEM data are stored internally by TsTools to enable you to then choose which data to merge into a terraform operation.Cheers,Dave C Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 12:24 PM (EST) 6. "RE: TsTools Version 1.0 Now available - includes SDTS import" There's a freeware program called UltimateZip that handles gzip and tar files, and it has a batch mode that lets you uncompress a bunch of files each into its own subdirectory. I had to uncompress the GZ's first all into one directory, then each of the tar's in another batch, each into its own directory.Eric Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 02:35 PM (EST) 7. "RE: TsTools Version 1.0 Now available - includes SDTS import" I have to confess that I hadn't realised this was such a sticking point - I've always found that winzip and winrar both do the job easily. If it is worthwhile, we could incorporate the unpacking into TsTools - any thoughts welcome.CheersDave C

Jan-23-02, 03:15 PM (EST) 8. "RE: TsTools Version 1.0 Now available - includes SDTS import" I know of two people (besides you) who have developed, or are developing, software that use USGS DEM data (or others) that are compressed in TAR.GZ format. Both have included decompression in their software. The one I can tell you about is Dr. Guth of MicroDem fame. I have no idea what mechanism he uses, but I knew that he does.WinZip has a known problem (and an option to select to combat it) in decompressing TAR.GZ files. If you were to provide decompression in your software--using the proper tools--I think you would find the tool looked at more favorably.By the way, have you received any crash reports yet? I need to e-mail you some information.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 03:34 PM (EST) 9. "RE: TsTools Version 1.0 Now available - includes SDTS import" LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-02 AT 03:35 PM (EST)Yes Lawrence. Gzip and tar code sources are published and are free under the GPL licence (can be freely modified and distributed). But you cannot include them in proprietary program. However, the formats are open and published. So it is easy to write yourself a decompression program (in fact gzip only compresses, tar is an archiver). Maybe is it also possible to link dynamically to them.Find gzip format in the page of Jean-Loup Gailly (yes, gzip is French !) at www.gzip.org Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 03:34 PM (EST) 10. "RE: TsTools Version 1.0 Now available - includes SDTS import" Thanks for the thoughts Lawrence. We'll definitely weigh up the benefits of putting this feature in. I put it that way because, to be honest, although we offer SDTS import in TsTools, we feel that the primary unique combinations of features in TsTools are the contour generation routines coupled with the ability to project the map with customised TM parameters, thus allowing users outside of the US to have easy methods for creating high res terrain data. We do not seriously hope to compete with any of the established (or about to become established) tools catering for high res DEM conversion. As to crash reports, we have had an interesting Win 2K bug pop up in our user forum, which we have found the solution to. If you have some reports for us, I'd be pleased to hear them. You would, of course, be more than welcome at our forum at http://dcm.nicewebs.com/phpBB Cheers
