Jan-16-02, 02:00 PM (EST) "Railroad Crossings: Circuiting" Just thought to ask about this little "cosmetic" problem in here, in hopes of finding an answer or even a solution. As we all know, the railroad crossing warning systems in MSTS do not behave like the real ones. In reality the cycle of warning for road traffic about an approaching train goes like this:1. The censors detect the train and it's speed
2. When the train is at a pre-determined distance away from the crossing
- the flashers go on
- the bells start to chime
3. After a short while (5-10 seconds later)
- the gates start to descend
4. After the train has cleared the crossing
- the bells are switched off
- the gates begin to open
5. When the gates are fully open, the flashers go offWell I have a situation where I have a crossing located right next to the yard entrance, so I can actually use the "spotter view" to watch at the crossing for three minutes for a train to creep its way towards the crossing from the yard. What annoys me the most is to see the gates go down at the very same moment when the bells start to chime.I would prefer the 10-second warning bell sequence before the gates begin to descend. Any solution to this, other than changing the animation?By the way: I think I have found a way to make the flashers actually flash, but it is still an experiment. I'll let you knowTVRail

Have you played with those yet?For me, this is not a real problem, and here's why. I'm not sitting in the car! I would suspect that the crossing sequence is governed more by people complaining that they have to wait to long than by the railroad's desires.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-16-02, 06:59 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Railroad Crossings: Circuiting" What annyos me the most about crossings are two things:1. On many crossings the gates never go back up after you cross over the road and the cars never leave the crossing, they just sit there for ever, you can watch them in the 3 view utill they are too far away to see, but they just sit there the whole time, and never move again.2. The gates go down and the cars start lineing up when your still a mile away from the crossing, even if your going 4mph the gates go down way too soon.Where I live in Wyoming, the gates go down when the train is within 200 ft of the crossing, not half a mile away. I think the representation of crossings in MSTS is pretty shity my self.Has anyone noticed the crossing on Marias(up the mountain a little ways from Coram I think) where your going right next to the lake and then it turns to the left and goes up a short, steep grade and then theres a road right at the top of it, well many cars dont even stop when the gates go down, they just go right through the train if you hit them too, hehehe. I wish more crossings had cars trying to get accross at the last minute, it would be more realistic then them stoping and waiting while your still a mile away.Trevor

one 't' used. The word you may have assumed it was has two 'T's.GaryG

Jan-18-02, 03:30 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Railroad Crossings: Circuiting" HiThe problem with that crossing (all versions of Marias Pass) is
the detector for the North to South traffic is located slightly
out of position. Deleting and reinstalling signals/gates is the
only cure as far as I know. The square box (orange I think) is located just off the "traffic
line" and I assume that's why the cars don't stop. I guess you
could move the road a bit but that's more work than replacing
the signal(s).GaryG

I think the representation of crossings in MSTS is pretty shity my self.<That's one thing that can be altered to make it more realistic by editing the properties of the crossing in route editor.
It's horses for courses. For a train doing 120mph even half a mile ( 15 sec) is cutting it too close for comfort.

Jan-17-02, 11:35 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Railroad Crossings: Circuiting" Yep, I've toodled around with the values (crossing properties) but that's not a way to handle them. At first I thought that the "More serious crossing alarm" would define the time the gates are down, but no, it didn't work. But perhaps there's a some gimmick to do that...Just annoys me to hear the bells start and see gates go down the same moment when the train hits the circuit. That's so unreal...I quess I'll be reworking the animation to make a "real" crossing. TVRail

Jan-19-02, 04:51 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Railroad Crossings: Circuiting" maybe its just around here in south MS, but when the gates are all the way down the bells will shut off after a few seconds, they dont just ring and ring and ring and... well you get it... then once the gates go into motion again until the lights go off the bells ring again. just thought id throw that in there. having realistic grade crossings would be a nice quirk, but id much rather have more realistic tracks, trains, etc. before that... in my opinion thats WAAAAAY down on the priority list.-Justin Cornell
