Jan-15-02, 06:46 PM (EST) "I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." It covers about 170 miles. It is the western extension of the Maris Pass BNSF route. The scenery is complete and there are two freight moving activities. I have broken it up into two zip files one is about 80 magabytes and the other about 40. All the decorations come from the Maris Pass route. Is there any interest? Uploading would be a challenge. I would like to thank all of you for the incredible amount of help that I have received in doing this.

Jan-15-02, 08:05 PM (EST) 2. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." Sounds good to me. Very good, in fact Sounds bloody brilliant if it could somehow be added onto Marias 3! Is this just pure fantasy or is it realistically possible to merge the two routes?>have broken it up into
>two zip files one is
>about 80 magabytes and the
>other about 40. All
>there any interest? Uploading
>would be a challenge. Downloading would be a challenge too! For modem users, I reckon 3 × 40 MB files is much more attainable. But if your 80MB file appears in the file library, I for one will certainly at least try to download it! But to see it merged with Marias 3 would be the best thing to happen to any MSTS route...

I think it is posible to merge the two routes together if the tiles match up where the route would connect to the other one, however, it would be very unlikely that they would alligne perfectly, and im guesing it would be a VERY hard task to complete.Trevor Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

So you have the 6 mile long Flathead tunnel on this route, or how about the branchline to Eureka, MT? Do you have the UP tracks included between Bonners Ferry and Sanpoint too?? Chuck, do you live in the area? I'm working on a highly customized and accurate Spokane-Cheney route, and would extend that east to Sandpoint when I finshed the first part (which may not be for a while yet).Ted Curphey

Are you going to add the Spokane to Coeur d'Alene branch. I lived there for 5 years BN(sorry BNSF) and UP both had daily locals. UP probably pulled about 10 cars a day off theur branch and BNSF another 10 on a slow day, more like 15-20.Erik Pierson

Jan-16-02, 01:30 AM (EST) 8. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." It is impossible to merge two routes together (at least until someone deciphers & writes a utility to merge tdb files & all that nonsense). But since Whitefish is a crew change point anyway, whats the big deal? Get off your train at Whitefish, walk to the depot, hand your warrants to the next crew, reload the next route, and get back on the engines.

Nope, Cheney (like the last name of the vice president) is about 25 miles southwest of Spokane. This route will be more of a switching/industrial route with a short scenic run to Cheney through Marshall Canyon. LAST EDITED ON Jan-16-02 AT 02:45 PM (EST)Besides, how do we know that the original Marias Pass isn't close to the maximum-sized route that MSTS can handle? I hope this isn't the case, but you never know. Especially with what some us have discovered about having too many consists.Count me in as a customer, whether it connects with Marias 3 or not.If you're still having difficulty preparing the route for upload, check with Jim (PO&N), Rich (EMRR), David (IC2) or any of the other "route gurus" in here. They are all *very* helpful and really have this stuff down pat.BTW, do you have any screenshots of the route?Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

It is being beta tested all the time. We have computers all over the house including the dining table. At supper the program is running and we are on a poor man's dinner train. Going west I have the train meet 8 or 9 oncomming trains. MSTS gets confused if you run your train too fast and a cornfield meet if too slow. The first siding going west after Flathead tunnel is sensitive to the broken coupler problem. The track is dead flat and straight so it is a Bill Gates problem. I get through it 90% of the time so just save before you get there.

Jan-16-02, 05:35 PM (EST) 14. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." Sounds great. Perhaps exactly what the sim needs to avoid getting boring.I will upload it, even with a modem connection. But I also would prefer splitting it into several archives, maximum 15 or 20 MB would be ok. It's simply terrible if you're downloading 80 MB. It takes about 4 hours and if there's any problem 20 minutes before it's finished you have to repeat it. There are no single files with real big sizes in the sim so splitting the route should be simple. Just start adding files to the first archive until it's about 15 MB and close winzip. Repeat building the next archive starting with the next file to pack. Besides from that technical details I think all MSTS users will say a big "Thanl you" for your great work.If I can get hands on your route, I promise to give you some reports about my tests.Mike Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-16-02, 06:35 PM (EST) 15. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." I think its better to keep the number of .zip files to a minimum, it might take 4 hours but downloading 10 diffrent zips will take even longer, and if you use a Download Accelerator program you can resume the download anyway if something goes wrong with 20 min left to go.Trevor Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-16-02, 08:42 PM (EST) 21. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." I DO believe it is possible to merge this with MP3, but it would take some experimentation. I'd be willing to take a crack at it once my computer gets fixed (mother board seems to have gone south and I'm writing this from a laptop).I am concerned about a couple of things though. One is the overall size of this puppy. I don't know if there is a limit, but I wouldn't be surprised. It is probably governed by memory size and how much is loaded in up front vs. how much the sim loads dynamically.Second would be duplication of files. Are you using additional shape files over and above those used in MP? If not, don't package those, but have the user copy them. If so, package only the additional ones.Did you pack the world files with FFEDIT or are they uncompressed? Very large difference in size if you compress them. Finally, the seam where the merge takes place, west of Whitefish may be a problem. If you used DEM data that doesn't match up with the original, there would have to be some changes made to make it all fit together. I know that when I've applied DEM data to the existing MP route, I get a different looking landscape. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-17-02, 02:15 AM (EST) 23. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." Look in your "Utilities" folder in MSTS. If there are no "techdocs" there, they are on the first CD. Just copy them somewhere where you can read them. Theyr'e in Word format, though, so if you don't have word, you'll have to downlaod the "wordviewer" from the MS sight. There's a document in there about converting files that explains how to use the ffedit utility. You need to open it from a DOS prompy, or from the "run" item on your start menu. I'm not super good about getting these DOS utilities, to work, so I'll let one of the experts give you a blow by blow. This sounds great, especially if you can get the file size down.Good Luck!John Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-17-02, 08:33 PM (EST) 24. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." It is in a subdirectory of the utilities directory. The document John refers to isn't quite correct, but it gets the idea across. When you edit a route and change something on a tile, the world file is decompressed into readable Unicode text. The sim doesn't pack it up again, presumably to save time when you save the route. Depending on the number of objects on a tile, these files can get quite large. The corrections to the "How to Convert Files to Binary Format" document, as least that apply to W/ME, are:(third bullet up from the bottom) --- Edit the newly created convert.bat file in a text editor. Insert 'ffeditc_unicode "' at the beginning...
--- Append '" /c /o: out\.w' to the end...example lines should look like this:
ffeditc_unicode "C:\TrainSim\Utils\FFEdit\filename.w" /c /o: out\.w In both cases where the above has /o: followed by a space, the space shouldn't be there. If I leave it out in the example, I get a smiley face.

If you're desperate and have enough harddrive space, you might want to use EZSTUFF3.bat on it. I did that after trying everything else that I read in the forum and that seemed to get it to load and run.At least I was able to get started heading east out of Sandpoint. Now the route is probably using two to three times the space that it was designed to use, but at least it'll get you running until we hear from the author.Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-19-02, 11:04 AM (EST) 35. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." People in the Microsoft Train Simulator forum have figured out how to get it to work. I haven't a clue how to get it to work on someone else's computer. They seem to have figured it out. All the necessary files are there except the ones that have to be copied from US2. The files from the 2 zips have to be put in the correct directories, and the files from US2 have to be put in the correct directories. The US2 files deal with textures and objects.

Jan-19-02, 08:27 AM (EST) 34. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." This is Jon. I downloaded both files of this route and I don't see the terrain.ace file in the terrtex folder I coopied and pasted from my usa2 directory to rename to mntn_low.ace and when I run the route in the game I get an error message that says train world initizilation falied or something like that. I have done the steps in the readme file correctly. Please reply back to me and let me know how I can get the route working properly. Thanks a lot. Look in the utilities of the file folder here for combstuf.zip Unzip into a temp file copy the ezstuffit bat file into the whitefish directory in the route file. Run the bat file. Go get a cup of coffee or take a shower if you have an older computer. Close the window, exit explorer, and there you go. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Whole new bunch of problems. I will tell you one thing though. Will never break up one of these routes into two parts again.

Thank you so much for offering that to us. I'm sure it was a lot of work. Your instructions were fine except the need to run EZStuff3.bat file and of course I had to remove your consists in the editor because I dont have all your rolling stock. At any rate I found the route interesting and driveable. Thanks again....ON TO SPOKANE!!!!!!!Ginger Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 08:37 PM (EST) 55. "RE: I have finished a route I call Whitefish going from Whitefish, MT to Sandpoint, ID." I need help to get this route to run.I have unzipped the route exactly as per the instructions with the one exception the there is no terrain.ace file in the terrtex folder (is this possibly significant? and if so of what?).Regardless I have changed the name of mntn_low.ace as per the instructions.I have then successively tried EZSTUFF and Route Control with identical results:In MSTS Drive a Train the route loads until the loading bar reaches the last three bars, it stalls and then exits to the MS problem sign asking if I want to e-mail MS.It would appear that others have got to this point and then solved the problem, but I have been unable to find the message explaining how they did it.If you have solved this could you please post the solution. Thanks in advance!CND Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 10:07 PM (EST) 57. "Derailment bug" I've been trying to run west from Whitefish, but the train always derails on the east switch of Wolf Prairie siding (the first siding west of the long tunnel). Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 02:06 PM (EST) 58. "RE: Derailment bug" HI,Yes I get a coupler broken on that place. And using EZStuff is a way too heavy (about 200 Mb!) for this route.
Only copy the Texture and terrtex folder of the Template route first and then the USA2 folders. This works great and saves space.Dick van den Hoven

Jan-23-02, 05:15 PM (EST) 59. "RE: Derailment bug" I spent hours relaying track at that place. It is straight and flat going into the points and coming out. I think it is a bug in the program. You will have to strengthen your couplers. Go into the .wag and .eng files and increase the coupler strength by a factor of five.
