Jan-15-02, 03:49 PM (EST) "Starting SP Coast Route" LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-02 AT 04:19 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-02 AT 03:51 PM (EST)Just starting SP Coast Route from San Francisco to LA.Extracted terrain from RGE and also managed to Import DEM and track waypoint markers - what a nightmare!Started laying track last night, north from San Luis Obispo as this is the halfway point on the route. When I got to the horseshoe curve just north of SLO, I realized that I could not lay a curve with a tight enough radius to follow the wpts (only 500m radius available?). Any advice? Is this a place for Dynamic track? Also, how are grades judged or measured? I'd hate to end up with something like the default Marias Pass. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.Only 470 miles of track yet to lay down! Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-15-02, 11:50 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Starting SP Coast Route" At the rate I'm going I'll be lucky to get to San Jose!I finally found some curves tight enough to follow the waypoints but I have no idea about the grades. I still feel like I'm laying track in the blind. I'm trying to follow the terrain grades on the flat lands but I'm ending up cutting my way through alot of it - even after rotating the track ends up to the max - just can't be right, can it? I finished the horseshoe turn north of San Luis Obispo and it looks right enough going from there up and around Santa Margarita Hill, but after that I can't follow the grades through the rolling hills in the valleys. Finally learned to save after laying a few peices of track between crashes - what a pain! How in the h&@$ do you get that detail level window to stop popping up after setting down every track section?Humph!!!! >Trevor Hi Trever,I right click on the mouse to maneuver the camera after setting a track section in order to align it with the previous sections grade and also to check the hit and mis selection of curves. Is there a way to change camera heading without using the right mouse button? Seems to take about three camera positions to align everything. The tighter curve I've found is the a1tendpnt10dlft and a1tendpnt10drgt. You can use the "T" key to flip these right or left - I don't know if flipping them leads to trouble or not. I think this section is typically used with turnouts but is the only one I've found that is tight enough to match up with the wpt path. I also try to lead into and out of this section with at least the 500m curve and try to use a short straight section between changes in curve direction (S-curves).Too much trial and error to track laying in my opinion, making the process very time consuming and tedious Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-16-02, 04:20 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Starting SP Coast Route" I can sympathize -- I'm attempting to build the SP main from Oakland to Sacramento; it's been a hell of a struggle every step of the way. I just started learning how to lay track this week and found a thread which may be helpful:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/1877.htmlcheers,

Thanks for the link chip. I suspect I'll be using alot of dynamic track in the future when I go back and start inserting turnouts ino the main line. I wish you could just point and click on wpts and the editor would lay the appropriate track section, or better yet select a whole string of waypoints and bang - like laying HO flex track. The Route Editor needs a spline routine with a multi-segmented flex track section about 100 miles long . Nice dream, eh? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 11:21 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Starting SP Coast Route" Just starting SP Coast Route from San Francisco to LA.
Is anyone starting at the Los Angeles end: LAUPT or Burbank Junction? I'm going to eventually essay the Common Standard Station that was used at Goleta and system wide. I'd also like to do Santa Barbara, as original, before restoration and as restored.

>as restored. If you are talking about building the stations I would be very interested.I just quit for the night on the SP Coast Route. I originally started at San Luis Obispo (midway point) and then went both north and south from there, depending upon my mood.I've re-graded the climb to Santa Margarita seven times now and beleive I finally got it right. Just finished laying the triple track through Obispo at the station and had my first experience with Dynamic track and switches. After messing with it I am happy to say it was a success!I set up an activity to test the run from south of Obispo north to Paso Robles. I'm finally satisfied that my grades are OK but it takes two Hudsons to haul the 16 car ESE up the hill, just like on the prototype (Though I wish I had a double headed GS4 Daylight!)- and forget about using the auto fireman here! And for others that are just starting a route of their own :1) Don't exceed 1.35 in track elevation (about 2.2% gradient) - less is better. Anything more for long stretches like I have and your steam engines will stall - can't stoke them fast enough without cooling off the fire.
2) Put the switches in as you lay the mainline. Though possible to add later, set them as you go and lay any dual, triple, or quad track as well. I started with a single track main, thinking I would just come back later after completeing the course, and ended up relaying most of what I had done when I went back to add passing and pocket sidings, etc. Glad I hadn't gone any further when I decided to try sidings.
3) Study the available curve radii for single, dual, triple, and quad track sections and the needs of your route carefully. The coast route has some tight turns in the hills that are not available in multi-track sections.Well on my way to LA and SF at the same time, now that I'm over the hill!
