Jan-14-02, 03:38 PM (EST) "Interesting "quirk" in pickup objects" I seem to have discovered another one of those inexplicable little things in MSTS that drive us all crazy. I was playing with my coal tower and suddenly, it didn't work anymore. I mean the animation and sound worked, but it stopped filling the tender. I thought I had messed up something in the .s file, so I went back and coppied my original. Still didn't work. Redid the whole thing from TSM. Still didn't work. At this point I was getting a little frantic. I opened the objects properties in the route editor, and guess what? It had run out of coal. No prob, I thought. I just retyped the max capacity in the "content" field, checked the "nerver runs out" box and tried again. It still didn't work. When I went back into the editor, the contnent had reset to 0. The never runs out box was still checked, though.I then deleted the tower and repositioned a new one, imediately checking the "never runs out" box. When I went back into the sim, it worked fine. Then I checked all my water towers. Some had contents of 0, and when I tried to fill from them they didn't work. I went around and replaced all my water towers, and everything seems fine now.The only reason I can come up with for this is that they originally intended to have the objects be "refillable" from within the game. When you place a pickup object, BE SURE TO CHECK THE "NEVER RUNS OUT" BOX!!! Unless you want to spend a lot of time zipping around in the route editor repositioning them later. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-14-02, 10:37 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Interesting "quirk" in pickup objects" I don't think unloading cars is possible in this version of MSTS. What I meant by my previous post was maybe that's what MS/Kuju had in mind, but never got around to putting in the sim. I mean, why else would you make a coaltower that runs out of coal and can't be refilled without deleting the object from the route and repositioning a new one? "RE: Interesting "quirk" in pickup objects" LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-02 AT 06:52 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-02 AT 06:52 PM (EST)Gandalf,Since you mentioned that you have TSM, have you tried creating a seperate coal load for the coal car, not the tender. In the tender's wagon file, there is a function call called "AnimFreight". I believe this function is responsible for animating the loading of the tender. AnimFreight is in the techdoc and can be used for fuel or freight. I don't know how complete the pickup process is but I wonder if we can setup the loading of coal cars. I do not know if anyone experimented with this yet, but if it works for a tender, it should work for a coal car.Edward K. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-14-02, 10:40 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Interesting "quirk" in pickup objects" I have indeed thought of it...and gravel, snad and grain as well. I agree that there is no logical reason this can't be done. I missed the techdoc on freight animation. I'll have to go back and look for it. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-15-02, 00:25 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Interesting "quirk" in pickup objects" I got it backwards, it's FreightAnim. I looked it up in the techdocs and it says see "How to Author Trains". Evidently Kuju forgot to include this document. I tried as an experiment using the supplied BNSF gondola. I included the line input() as a fuel_coal. The numbers I plugged into the input fucnction was a best guess. I pulled it under the coal tower and sure enough, got it to work. One thing I did notice is that the transfer sounds under the global sound directory are for fuel only. Jim Steven in one of his past posts mentioned about being able to load gravel so it must be possible.Edward K. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

You do have freight pickups but they aren't activated. They are hidden deep in the belly of MSTS. Get sniper's new all_stuff.ref. the pickups are gravel, coal, sand, mail, and another one. They do not work unless you edit the .s file for the car to have the freightanim line. the cars will start to get heavier and the train will be harder to move as you "load em up". HOWEVER!!!!! DON NOT CHANGE THE CONTENT ( unless it doesn't have anything set for it ) OR SPEED LIMIT in the route editor for the pickups or else it resets to 0. change the pickup to have something in the fields of the amount the pickup has and how much it unloads then click the "never runs out" box. NEVER TOUCH THE SPEED LIMITS!!!! I tried settting them to 0mph as I figured I would want to stop to fill the car. WELL I found that the sim sets the pickups load and unloads to 0. by load I mean how much the pickup object holds before it runs out. just a little FYI. Jan-15-02, 11:39 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Interesting "quirk" in pickup objects" LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-02 AT 11:39 AM (EST)TopDog5184,I already know that there are two lines that would have to be plugged into the wagon file. The first of course is the input() function, and the second being the FreightAnim(). As it stands, there is nothing that really describes the FreightAnim() function. I was wondering how complete/incomplete the pickup process is. Right now, we can fill water and coal tenders and possibly apply the same concept to coal cars as well as grain cars. Does this pickup process have potential that we just do not know about?Edward K. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-15-02, 10:57 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Interesting "quirk" in pickup objects" The FreightAnimation function merely controls the position of the shape file representing the freight load. it does not affect the weight or performance of the car in any way, only the appearance of the load.Joe Diamond Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
