Jan-12-02, 02:15 PM (EST) "Coal Mine Structures" Odd as it seems to me, I can't locate any coal mine structures in the standard MSTS package, nor are there any structures that might make reasonable facsimiles of them.If anyone is interesting in helping me, personnally, as I need several such collections of structures on my Kingsport Sub. route, or other modelers who are working on coal field routes, please set your self to the task of creating some typical old-fashion, and modern mine structures. Here are some suggestions.Mine-head frame. Typically a square building about 5M on a side, topped with a tower like structure with two large wheels on top. Cables pass over these wheels from a winch house, typically 20M or so away from the mine-head. These cables operate the shaft hoist (i.e. elevator).Tipple. Varies in size, but spans one or more tracks, typically as many as 5 tracks. These tracks might be on 5M centers like MSTS, or slightly wider. STructure should be modular, so the spacing between tracks, height of the structure over the track, etc. could be varied. These were typically reddish in color when new (Iron oxide paint over wood), but eventually bleached to a short of grey color. If covered in metal, they had rust spots.Newer structures would be corrugated metal covered, typically galvanized steel, perhaps aluminum. In addition to the tipple and head-frame structures, there would often be silo like structures to store coal between unit trains. Conveyors on old systems would be covered the same way (and color) as buildings. On newer structures, they were often blue in color, and the overall appearance was usually cleaner.Similar structures are used on other types of mines. Above is typical for eastern states operations. Western states often did not have (do not have) tipples, but have much larger silos as they are solely Unit train operations.J. H. Sullivan, P.E.

Jan-12-02, 03:12 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Coal Mine Structures" I have been working on a route that has several open pit coal mines in Southwestern Wyoming. Silo's, coal dumps, load out structures, conveyores, etc. for the atomsphere of the real thing. I have a bare (not skined) loadout building, conveyer sections and so on but they are not any where near release. I have a lot of work to do, but step by step the project advances.I know at least one tipple ( very nice job I'll add) exists in the file library if that would help.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
