Jan-11-02, 06:26 PM (EST) 2. "RE: (Send Error Message/Dont send)" Do you really want it to send?! I'm always a little dubious of such things - I wouldn't be at all surprised if, along with the error code for TrainSim, it also sends along a nice little inventory of your registry, your serial numbers, and and any personal information it can get it's hands on from Windows...Message Areas - "(Send Error Message/Dont send)" – image 2 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-12-02, 01:53 AM (EST) 4. "RE: (Send Error Message/Dont send)" It actually does get sent but...the error reporter (and whatever else it reports) locks the system for 5 to 6 minutes. Gawd! I do send them because I figure they DO need reports if we ever want a fix for all this bugware. Also you must be logged on to your ISP at the time you start the reporter or it will lock the system requiring a reset/reboot. Way cool Microscum!

Actually I read the fourth post first, then I read the third post second, the second third and the first fourth. I may be dyslexic, but I still know a system crash when I see one.

I press the Send Report button. The system *WILL* completly freeze for *FIVE TO SIX MINUTES* (5 to 6 minutes) depending on your processor speed and amount of RAM installed.
(mine is 866P3/512Meg)
I do mean *COMPLETLY FREEZE*. The clock even stops running and it is not possible to move the mouse pointer.
(Yeah, I know, what the hell is the "Cancel" button for if you can't press it?)
If you are *NOT* connected to the net *AT THE TIME THE SEND REPORT BUTTON IS PRESSED*, you are correct, you will need to do a reboot.
BUT, if you are connected, after the 5 to 6 minutes pass the report gets sent.
What is going on during these 5 to 6 minutes? Not exactly sure but I can speculate based on 32 years experience as a field tecnician with IBM.
A dump of all relevant storage locations for the error is being formatted. The system is frozen because the error formatter wants to prevent any changes to the data that is to be sent, thus preserving the validity of the data.
Do you realize that *thousands* of machine instructions need to be processed just to move the mouse pointer across your display screen? So all processing in stopped to preserve the report data, data that could/would be corrupted by even a simple thing like moving the mouse or updating the system clock.

I admit the first few times I sent (or tried to send) the error report, I did a reset button reboot as I waited staring at an electric rock display screen, then did the reset after a few minutes. I was not successful in sending a report until I upgraded to a cable modem. With AOL as my ISP the error reporter *NEVER* worked.
I can speculate on that too, the freezing of the system for that length of time caused the AOL connection to terminate and I was left with the electric rock, requiring a reboot. With a cable LAN connection the error report sending works every time. I just go get myself a cuppa coffee and relax a bit, the report goes out and the system returns to normal.Vince Cockeram

Jan-18-02, 08:16 PM (EST) 13. "RE: (Send Error Message/Dont send)" Just remember the great caveat "editors and tools are not supported". So they probably have a filter that looks for editor related signatures in the problem data and sends them to the bit bucket. I've actually gotten that screen very few times in the sim itself. It's not too hard to see why the editors and tools are unsupported.Kuju developed the routes in the sim with those tools so they are aware of the "problems". The question is, do you think they will put any effort into correcting them or just go for the MS model of creeping featurism instead. Speaking of which, I've got to get rid of that green grassy hill background in the new "organic" XP interface. I keep trying to lay track on it!RichardRichard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
