Jan-07-02, 09:44 PM (EST) "Jan. 7, 1907 (2002) progress report" By this point in the history of the Clinchfield, G. L. Carter has gotten kind of ticked off at the progress and quality of the work on the new CC&O Railroad, and is looking for a new construction engineer. Soon he will entice a Mr. Caples away from the N&W, and things will improve. To the Remote Directors & Kibitzers:After suitable fortification (moonshine) the construction engineer again hires the local airman, who somehow or another, probably as a poker game prize, has a Wright Flyer, to take him over the works in progress. Again he has his magic camera, for as far as we know, color film did not come along for another 35 years or so.First he makes a pix of the north portal of Click Tunnel, which has been more or less completed.Message Areas - "Jan. 7, 1907 (2002) progress report" – image 1Flying further south, we come to the north portal of Sensabaugh Ridge Tunnel.Message Areas - "Jan. 7, 1907 (2002) progress report" – image 2Progressing along, we come to the North Fork of the Holston R., where it appears that a landslide has occurred that has partially filled the river further downstream - well, a little dynamite (i.e. scenery sculpting) will fix that.Message Areas - "Jan. 7, 1907 (2002) progress report" – image 3Forgetting about the yard that is still under construction, and instructing the pilot to reduce altitude, and fly north along the South Holston Bridge at about 10' above the track, another pix is taken which shows essentially what a northbound engineer will see in a few months.Message Areas - "Jan. 7, 1907 (2002) progress report" – image 4The Panic stricken pilot, who now believes his passenger might be dangerous, is next told to fly a few miles to the south, where we observe the north portal of Kendrick Ridge tunnel. In 30 years or so, US-23 will cross the railroad just ahead of this portal, and many motorists will be startled at the blast from the twin stacks of a northbound 4-6-6-4 as it blasts out of this tunnel with northbound coal empties.Message Areas - "Jan. 7, 1907 (2002) progress report" – image 5Finally, word is received by carrier pigeon, that the bridge gang has finished Boone Creek, and that the track gang has the south switch of Boone Siding installed. South we go for a look, and-------Message Areas - "Jan. 7, 1907 (2002) progress report" – image 6This concludes this progress report and pictorial.Signed,J. H. Sullivan, P.E. I was only "mock" disappointed that Gray didn't make the route, since I grew up there and would often talk to Yellow Dog crews headed north to Dante. They would often stop and drop off cars in the storage siding- -bad orders, etc. Anyway, it looks great. Can't wait for the finished product! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

It looks good.I never got a chance to railfan the Clinchfield before CSX (or was it SBD?) gobbled it up but I'm looking forward to doing so in MSTS.Keep us posted.Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
