Jan-07-02, 11:13 AM (EST) "Editing .s files and .sd files" Hi everybody,
seemingly I am somewhat too stupid to handle certain features of MSTS, namely I want to edit some of the shapes of the tracks to adapt to German geometry.
The FAQ of TS - Insiderhome gives, that they may be edited by Notepad or Wordpad. But when I try, I receive nothing but long lines senseless characters. (I am using Windows ME) Has anybody some suggestions how to procede ?Thanks a lot, folks

Jan-07-02, 11:33 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Editing .s files and .sd files" Wordpad in ME will work on the sd file without a problem. The s has probably been compressed to binary. You will need to use ffeditc_unicode to uncompress before editing it. You can then use ffeditc_unicode to compress it after you are done editing it.David Klemm

Jan-07-02, 02:47 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Editing .s files and .sd files" There's a document in the techdocs on the first CD that helps with this. However, the directions it gives for running ffedit aren't totally correct. Run it once in a DOS window without any other parameters so it displays the help info and that should help you. Jan-07-02, 03:19 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Editing .s files and .sd files" Hi,
Decompile a .s or .w file1. Copy the ffedit folder from Train Simulator/Utils to the root of the C:
This only for your convience, you have to use it in a DOS box and try to type to path to the TrainSimulator.2. Now create in that ffedit folder two simple bat files
Decode_w.bat
Decode_s.batHere is the text for decode_s.bat:
echo you gave in %1
ffeditc_unicode %1.s /o:%1.s /kAnd here for decode_w.bat:
echo you gave in %1
ffeditc_unicode %1.w /o:%1.w /kNow copy an .s file, lets say Jp2TrackRepair.s to c:\ffeditStart a DOS box, go to the ffedit folder:And when you are in the ffedit folder, give this command:
decode_s JP2TrackRepair and press EnterYou got some messages and your s file has become much bigger, it is a decompiled text file.
Now you can open it with an editor.Dick van den Hoven

Jan-07-02, 04:30 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Editing .s files and .sd files" Dick; It's been a while since I ran it, but doesn't running the same statement on a decompressed s or w file compress it? Seems to me when I ran it, what ever way the file was, ffeditc made it the other way. At least that is what I remember! : )David Klemm

Jan-08-02, 02:00 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Editing .s files and .sd files" I don't know about Dick's experience, but on particularly large .w files in Unicode form, I've had ffedit's message say it is creating a compressed TEXT file. Usually the message says Binary. Running it again on this compressed file created a binary.I also ran ffedit against an already packed binary, asking it to pack it (not realizing the original was packed). It did NOT unpack it to text. Instead it said it was creating a packed binary. One might hope that would mean it was leaving well enough alone.But...after doing this and going back into the route editor, I found that one or more signs (+ and -) had been flipped on some coordinates and objects that used to be on the ground were now up in thin air...and upside down. The moral is...be careful with ffedit and use the switches in the program to control what it does instead of assuming it will do what you want. Jan-08-02, 02:06 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Editing .s files and .sd files" Hi,So far I have not done any route building.
But I have decoded s files several times to look what .ace file they are using.
After that I delete the .s file.
I know that ffeditc_unicode looks if a file is binary then you get a text file and if you have a text file, then you get a binary.
But as I said, never used an s file after using it with ffeditc_unicode.Dick van den Hoven
