Dec-29-01, 03:05 AM (EST) "Wierd stuff in the Route Editor, Again : Shape-Shifting Objects......." While trying to manipulate the "JP1concreteSlab10m" object into a verticle position, I hit the "N" key to level it out and -"Presto-Chango" - It changed shape. Not once, but over and over again.
Object on left was the 10m slab after hittin' "N". It's now a beam. But look what happens to the slab on the right in these views:
Each time it morphed into a different geometric pattern. Some were usable, some were not. I've never seen this happen before, so I was wondering if anyone else has seen this.Tim Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Did you try hitting the "W" key to see if the rest of it is below ground? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-29-01, 11:25 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Wierd stuff in the Route Editor, Again : Shape-Shifting Objects......." The concrete slab don't have an inside or bottom texture. I tried using those before, but to make them work as walls you have to use two of them sandwiched bottom-to-bottom, otherwise they're visible only from one side.
Couple of tunnels roof slabs (Jim Steven object, might be the same as concrete slab, I haven't really looked at it yet) rotated to the vertical. On the far right are two of them with the bottoms faced together. Note the upside-down JP2susbrg in the background, since the end is supposed to be hidden by ground or another connecting piece, there's no end or inside texture. Same holds true for the bottom of the support column, now on top, because it would normally only be visible from underground, and KUJU's reasoning is that moles are nearsighted anyway and wouldn't know the difference. I did see a mole driving a train once, but I think it was in a cartoon. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-29-01, 12:42 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Wierd stuff in the Route Editor, Again : Shape-Shifting Objects......." Yah, I realize alot of objects are bottomless, or backless. But this slab actually *changed in size* and shape! Try it and see if you get the same results.
Well, I gotta go. I'm getting more RAM today, finally!Tim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-29-01, 11:34 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Wierd stuff in the Route Editor, Again : Shape-Shifting Objects......." I can't say I have seen this morphing, but some of those shapes, might be usable in their morphed form. AT least I learned another "key", i.e. the "N" key. I'll have to try that on some of my distorted efforts on plate girder bridges.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-29-01, 10:35 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Wierd stuff in the Route Editor, Again : Shape-Shifting Objects......." So what does the "N" key do? You left out the best part, or are you teasing us?
The "morphing" I'm seeing in your pics, Tim, just look like the standard thing you would see from different angles. That JP2susbrg is a good example, it's a huge, tall bridge, but the axis of rotation is the bottom of the single support leg. So unless you raise it in the air before rotating it, the whole thing dissapears underground. Before I discovered the water roof trick I was experimenting with rotating those US2Tarmac sections upside down to use as a roof, and it was real tricky because they don't have a bottom - or sides! Like looking at a sheet of window glass from the edge in a bad light, start rotating and it vanishes. Concrete slabs are a little easier, cuz they have sides, but the trick is to use the movement, raise it up in the air with the keypad 8, then duck down underneath it so you can see it to rotate it. Nobody ever said art was easy! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-30-01, 00:00 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Wierd stuff in the Route Editor, Again : Shape-Shifting Objects......." Jim, the "N" key levels the object even with the ground under it. I've been using it after rotating a building or whatever to re-align the object with the ground. HOWEVER... it dont work so good on un-even surfaces. Unless you want the leaning water tower of pizza. Then after it looks good, use the "M" key to un-wireframe it(only works once, tho, after that use the regular select key). It also works well on approaches to highway bridges. I've found that certain bridge objects have awkward pivot points and wont tilt up in the right angle. So, Id select a 50m road piece and tilt it to the angle needed up to the bridge, hit the "Y"key to bring the terrain up to the desired angle, delete the road piece, select the bridge approach and rotate it to line up with it, then hit "N" and it drops down to the angle of the ramp. The pic below shows one of the approach ramps( JP-somethin) done in this way. I needed to have space under the approaches, so after they were adjusted to fit, I used a 7m section of track with the angles set to the desired cutting and carved out the terrain from under the approaches:

Dec-30-01, 09:00 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Wierd stuff in the Route Editor, Again : Shape-Shifting Objects......." Now that's cool. Somebody posted a list of the editor key commands a long time ago, I haven't looked at it for quite a while.
**********************************************************
Here is the full list of all possible keystrokes in the editor. See if you can figure out what each one does!
( PAD_8 "EditUp" ) ( PAD_2 "EditDown" ) ( PAD_4 "EditLeft" ) ( PAD_6 "EditRight" )
( N "NormalAlign" )( H "HeightAlign" )( R "kreverse" )( O "resetrot" )( V "vrot" )( Y "TModify" )( F "TSmooth" ) ( V "Visible" )( G "Snap to grid Toggle" )( C "Copy" ) ( V "Paste" )( DELETE "delete" )( INSERT "insert" )
( PAD_TIMES "errminus" ) ( PAD_MINUS "errplus" )( PAGE_UP "zplus" )( PAGE_DOWN "zminus" ) ( EQUALS "timeplus" )( MINUS "timeminus" ) ( T "SubStateToggle" )( BACKQUOTE "EditUndo" )( S "EditSave" ) ( HOME "MoveCameraTo" )( F2 "EditorSelect" )( F3 "EditorMove" ) ( F4 "EditorRotate" )( F5 "EditorPlace" ) ( F6 "EditorEdit" )( F7 "EditorPatchSelect" )( F8 "EditorPencil" )( F9 "EditorSampleSelect" ) ( M "EditorMakeCollideable" )( SLASH "EditorCameraCollisionToggle" )( X "EditorObjectSnappingToggle" )
( 1 "TextureSelect1" )( 2 "TextureSelect2" )( 3 "TextureSelect3" )( 4 "TextureSelect4" )( 5 "TextureSelect5" )( 6 "TextureSelect6" ) ( 7 "TextureSelect7" ) ( 8 "TextureSelect8" )( 9 "TextureSelect9" )( SPACE "TextureSelectcurrent" )
( D "ToggleDragSel" )( J "TerrainRefresh" ) ( W "TerrainWireFrame" )
************************************************************I forget where I saw that, I just copied all the text out of the thread and saved it into one of my many text files for hints and tips. I think he missed the CTRL key, I saw that somewhere else, when you are in move mode holding down the CTRL key while dragging keeps the object at a fixed altitude, altho the other tip about holding down the CTRL key while rotating never worked for me.
