Dec-18-01, 09:46 PM (EST) "PC upgrade needed?" The short story is that when I try to lay dynamic track I get the infamous 'trainsim has encountered a problem and needs to close'!My system is a K6-2/333 and originally had a cheap 4meg AGP video with a Monster card. Trainsim wouldn't run at ALL... and with the help of MS Tech Support we decided it was (obviously) a video problem. I've upgraded to a I/O Magic 32meg AGP Graphics
Accelerator card. Trainsim runs fine but I'm still having trouble with the tools. I've also upgraded from 96 meg to 256 meg of RAM.Now I'm also having a problem with lock-up when I try to go into the consist editor (I've made consists before but now, inexplicably, I can't!).I am about to upgrade my PC to a 1.2 gHz Athlon. Yes... I know that is a good move anyway... but I'd rather not spend the money AT THIS TIME if this won't solve my problems. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks,

Dec-18-01, 10:19 PM (EST) 1. "RE: PC upgrade needed?" Couple of things you can try...I am not familiar with that particular card you got (As far as I am concerned anything that is not a NVidia Geforce 2/3 is a no name brand) but have you tried getting newer drivers than those which came on the disk with it? Also after you have the new card installed try reinstalling directx 8.1. Some people have had problems with getting DirectX to work right without reinstalling it after upgrading drivers for their video or sound cards. Also make sure both the card and monitor can support at least 1024x768x16 graphics as those are the minimum graphics for "trouble-free" operations (that's in quotes to represent it's dubiousity ) Be sure your desktop is set to the same resolution as the game/editor is set to. It shouldn't be necessary if DirectX is switching video modes okay, but sometimes DirectX has problems making the switch. Also be sure to run the TrainSimulator's Troubleshooter program now that you've got that new card as it will redetect your hardware and drivers for optimal performance. If you've been through all those basic things you could try reinstalling TrainSim, sometimes that helps if certain files have gotten misconfigured or corrupted. It's sort of a last ditch effort but it has been known to help.Just some things to try, hope some of them help. Sorry it's not more coherent, but then if it was I'd be a Technical Writer -Andy

Dec-19-01, 01:50 PM (EST) 2. "RE: PC upgrade needed?" I don't think changing hardware is the answer. The first attempt at a route using dynamic track I got tons of error messages, however on my Far North route (which uses considerable dynamic track) I've not had any error messages or database corruptions I could link directly to using or conforming dynamic track. I still get the "MTS has encountered a problem...", message from time to time but I suspect that is a memory management issue within the utility. It usually occurs after extensive conforming of track or landscape without saving, which act presumably hard writes the data and clears the buffer. So the age old advice applies, really. Save, save and save - especially before using dynamic track or during major terraforming. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
