Dec-15-01, 06:38 PM (EST) "There be mountains WAY over there!" I've cracked the distant mountain problem. Not the best example, but here's a before:
and after:
The process is rather complex at the moment, but this is the real-deal.It also requires an update to DEM-Ex so it will be a little while before its released.

Dec-19-01, 04:43 AM (EST) 10. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" Yes the Comumbia Gorge would be a nice route. I used to live in Hood River. Wife is from White Salman, so we know the area will well.Beutiful River scenes as well as Water Falls bridges, Dams, would be a great Route.

Dec-31-01, 02:01 AM (EST) 16. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" The Columbia Gorge has been in the back of my mind for when I gain enough experience in using the Route Editor. It's awesome country.Does anyone know whether topo map data is available on-line for the Columbia Gorge area? I've been led to believe that DEM data has shortcomings rendering country with steep outcroppings (like Beacon Rock in the Gorge); it seems to me that entering data from a contour map would result in more realistic landscape.Wes Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-16-01, 08:02 PM (EST) 8. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" Awesome!! While I might moan about MSTS .. (ok even if only a little).. you guys are awesome... Big respect... if EVER I need anything fixing I'd ask a train guy from now on.. . The sim may be 'pretty good' but for me , the biggest eye-opener has been the friendly informative and downright clever group of people who are 'into' this thing.
Nice going! And yes it's still on my HD jv Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-17-01, 03:36 PM (EST) 9. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" Great, John! I knew this had to be possible, and when I saw you were getting involved I figured it was close. (Hope I was helpful with the lo_tiles in some small way). I would be happy to beta-test your revised software. If you want to take the topic offline please email me.Sammy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-19-01, 06:06 AM (EST) 11. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" That's realy great news. Building routes in Norway without distance mountains looks rather strange...)Will it be possible to "just" generate the distance mountain as an option, with the new version of Dem-Ex?RuO Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-28-01, 10:35 PM (EST) 12. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" I need a couple people to test the distant mountains portion of Demex. Testers will need to assist with refining the procedures for installing the lo_tiles, as the process is slightly complex. (Sounds like Rich Garber has another tutorial on his hands ) If interested send an email to dem_ex@hotmail.comIf I don't recognize your name from these forums as having demonstrated experience with generating DEM terrain please don't bother applying.I'd also like to hear from the CPR Laggan sub guy, as there are some interesting issues when combining with non-demexed terrain I'd like to explore.Sorry, no Australians need apply: Though demex DOES recognize tiles down under correctly, initial study indicates Microdem doesn't output UTM coordinates for that area properly (they have negative Northing and Easting values, which are a no-no in UTM). Dec-29-01, 01:17 AM (EST) 13. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" WAY to go. Mountains are needed in the background. You can contact me at andy@mapleleaftracks.com about the Laggan Sub which is near beta testing. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-29-01, 11:42 AM (EST) 14. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" I am working on the Clinchfield in Va./Tenn/NC and there are lots of mountains. Would be glad to help if you need me, otherwise, I await your updates on the tools.By the way, I have never got XYZmerge to work, but found that in most cases, SeamFil takes care of the problem. However, in mountainous terrain, it tends to make a "spine" out of a "ditch" so I am hand sculpting in those areas.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-31-01, 03:29 AM (EST) 17. "RE: There be mountains WAY over there!" FYI: I have enough testers now, thanks.
Andy: My email address is 4 messages up. I don't see how a virus on your system is keeping you from seeing it.
