Dec-15-01, 04:54 PM (EST) 3. "RE: test" It looks to me like you posted (and I'm gonna put this in qoutes)
"www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3c- b85643285c1ff.gif".
you're missing the http:// in front of that. Let's try it with the whole prefix;http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3c- b85643285c1ff.gifNope, that don't work either. Possibly the space between the 3c- and the rest of the file number, let's try getting rid of that.
Nope. OK, how about the dash, does that belong in there?
Hmm, that ain't it either. Maybe you didn't check the right box, this, for example, wouldn't work;
Notice I have gif checked, and the file is .jpg, so I should have jpg checked to make it work. This thing is very bureaucratic, you gotta get all the blanks filled in correctly or it just doesn't work, and it doesn't let you know that it's not working when you didn't cross your eyes and dot the tease, just like a government employee. Dec-16-01, 00:42 AM (EST) 8. "RE: test" LAST EDITED ON Dec-16-01 AT 00:58 AM (EST)Whaddya mean you should know this? There some kind of law that says we gotta be born knowing everything that everyone else knows already? Sometimes I wonder if some of you guys understand the purpose of public discussion forums, you learn what you don't know from me, I learn what I don't know from you. "Everyone is ignorant, only in different areas." - Mark TwainAs far as prepping a picture for upload, it depends on which image editing program you use. They all work a little differently, and have varying degrees of ease of use versus quality and versatility. I usually reduce the image size to 800x600 since I know some people are still plugging along with 14 inch monitors. For Paint shop pro 7 I generally select file, export, and choose the jpeg optimizer;
You can zoom in and move the window around to see the effect the compression has on the quality, note that this was 1024x768x24bit, 50% compression doesn't blur it much and reduces it from 2,359,336 to 79,760 bytes, within limits for this server's upload. Corel Draw Essentials has a similar feature in Corel Photopaint 9;
Except you can't zoom the windows in for a closer look. Both programs cost about the same, Corel is easier to use and more versatile, but unfortunately won't save a targa with the alpha channel, so it's useless for engine skinners, gotta have PSP7 for transparent windows.
Micro$haft also makes Picture it publisher, which is fairly easy to convert jpegs, but doesn't give you a compression, only an easy way to make size conversions and thumbnail shots.
Note that in this screengrab from explorer the "4.jpg", highlighted in yellow, is 135kb. The rest of these files could be uploaded, if I wanted to post that one I'd have to reduce the size or increase the compression so the trainsim.com server wouldn't kick it back. This might be kind of confusing, I did a print screen from explorer, pasted it into Picture it publisher, then print screen again, so the above picture of picture it publisher got pasted into Corel Photopaint 9 and saved as a compressed jpg. (Look closely at the second picture from the top, same thing, PSP7 pasted into Corel Paint 9) After saving the explorer screengrab from Picture it publisher at 600x450, I get this;
Pretty bad, since there's a bunch of white space and no compression at all, it claims 81k but that last picture, cruddy as it is, is actually 90k.
So the moral of this parable is, spend money to save aggravation, get a good paint program or two and learn to use it. MS PIP cost $50, the other two about a hundred each. The difference for the extra fifty smackers is astounding.

Dec-16-01, 04:18 PM (EST) 11. "RE: test " ok Second try at uploading, of it works it isn't much as of yet, but a water Shot ... too blue, or should i Darken the color a little, if anyone is Wondering what waterway that is, that's the Delaware River at the Delair bridge (Which i don't have as of yet, waiting to get Train Sim Modeler.
so i can take a shot at making the bridge, and the rails in the Shot are part of the PRR line
