Dec-13-01, 07:43 PM (EST) ".bin DEM's" I have a .bin DEM, and I am not sure how to bring the data into MSTS. Could anyone tell me how to use them, or refer me to a post? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: .bin DEM's" LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-01 AT 09:36 PM (EST)This paragraph is what was added--I didn't notice that Dave had already applied.I got some GLOBE data last night, and one of the three files--the one actually containing the data--has "bin" as the extension. The data, if I remember correctly, had elevational points approximately every 1 km, which means that a lot of detail is missing. However, to answer your question. There are two ways to bring it into MSTS. One is via the MicroDem/DEM-EX programs. If you look at the last few message threads you will see a link to download it. Dr. Peter Guth, the creator of MicroDem, has just started posting here, and he has his own MicroDem forum. The link for that is just a few messages ago, too. Basically, you will have to use MicroDem to import it into a DEM, then export that to ASCII XYZ UTM coordinates. Then using a utility named DEM-EX (can be found at http://sd40.topcities.com), it takes the XYZ data and writes to MSTS tiles. The second method, which I have not used, is using the new beta program TSTools. It is my understanding that it is supposed to be able to take the GLOBE data and write to the files. Again, this is just my understanding, and maybe DCM, one of the main movers of TSTools, can jump in and provide some assistance. However, I think that for many locations throughout the world, and especially locations in the USA, there is finer resolution data available than GLOBE data, if in fact that is what you have. With a resolution of 1km, you can have an entire canyon not even show up! And for our use, that may not be one of the best ways to go.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

However, if you see my thread TsTools and the DEM question (or something very like that) - from a couple of days ago, I talk about this in more detail. If its not GLOBE data, or if you don't know - let me know, I'd be interested to see what it is.CheersDave C
