Dec-12-01, 03:53 PM (EST) "Dr. Guth's Response" I had no more than clicked the Post button, and then read my e-mail, when I found that Dr. Guth had sent me a response, two in fact. Here it is the first:------------Response Start---------------
There may be anomalies with merging USGS DEMs with multiple z resolutions (feet, decimeters, and meters). Until last week I had personally not tried to merge dm DEMs with anything else (I either used individual DEMs, or merged dm only DEMs). Some problems with doing that were fixed over the past weekend, and additional problems were fixed today (including feet/meter merges, which worked probably up until this weekend). If you download the versions posted on the USNA server posted today, there should be no problems. If that is optimistic (and I admit I did not test every combination of elevation units, with the low/medium/high relief categories that require cm/dm/m units in the merge), let me know. The debug log, if you download the EXE only, which you can call up from the help menu, will track the merge with messages similar to the following. If you have problems, please post the debug code which will help us to track down any remaining problems. The EXE in the full install will not perform this tracking, and will not help track down this problem. =======extract from the debug log=============================== Selected DEM Merge arrived in DEM Merge for DEM #0

-------------Response Start----------------You should get a message about a posting in the Delphi forum. You in fact pointed out a bug that caused us to recall what was the final posting for version 5.1 (but before it became public). I tested over the weekend with flatland DEMs, so CM resolution was OK, but in these 4 you had to use DM resolution. The code was correct in how it checked, but the elevation range
in the DEM was not getting set so the check was worthless. This time I think it works. You can advertize my forum, and there is already an MSTS discussion folder (for someone digitizing from a scanned map). The new resample option is much easier to use than the old thin, and it will work both ways (10m to 30m, and 30m to 10m) without having to set the number of rows and columns. You don't need the full install (which in any case I hope will not change for a month or two), but can just download the new exe.
----------------------Response End--------------You can find the latest version of MicroDem at:http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdemdown.htmBe aware that you can download the full package or just the updated executable--in this case, according to Dr. Guth, you don't need the full install. And his forum, which you can address issues directly to him, is at:http://forums.delphiforums.com/microdem/startYou don't have to be a member of Delphi in order to read his forum. You can login as "guest."Hope this helps.Lawrence Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-13-01, 10:29 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Dr. Guth's Response" Great news Lawrence. I have feet/meter DEMs and I have noticed some strange behaviors with them. I will try out the new version. Thanks for all of your work, and working with the good Dr.

Dec-14-01, 09:08 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Dr. Guth's Response" The merge of different unit (meter,feet,decimeter,etc..) DEMs works very well, or at least but than previous versions.Brian Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-14-01, 11:44 AM (EST) 3. "Lawrence, a question" Lawrence;First thanks for doing all this leg work. I for one appreciate it. I downloaded the version listed above in your message. How do I know I got the right one? In the list of fixes it doesn't mention anywhere MSTS or feet and meters. At least that I can see. In the about it list December 2001. Just curious to make sure I have the one that deals with the feet and meters. I have had to break up merging DEM's becuase of this and have the seam to deal with.David Klemm

Dec-14-01, 12:52 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Lawrence, a question" I don't think that Dr. Guth is recording the MSTS stuff in the What's New type area. He is doing this just out of the kindness of his heart. How can you tell if you have the latest? At his page, there is a link for just that purpose, it is near the top of the download page.Another way you can tell is by the date of the executable. It should be Dec 11, 2001, or some date close to that--not Dec 3.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-14-01, 04:24 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Lawrence, a question" The what's new section of the splash screen only indicates "major" enhancements. The minor changes, such as making merging easier, will show up in the complete version changes when the help file gets recompiled. You should now be running a vesion with a light blue splash screen.
