Dec-12-01, 01:52 PM (EST) "Re: DEM level 1 and level 3 merging problems..." I have the terrain features of my route figured out. I was screwed up thinking that the level 1 and level 3 specifications had anything to do about my problems. As it turned out I had a mix of 10m and 30m resolution DEM's. I attempted to merge them with the instructions provided with the MicroDEM program, but lacked the required 30m files to complete the overlay process.I would have liked to use the data from gisdatadepot, but could not download the required 30m DEM's. So, early this morning I bit the bullet and purchased the DEM data from ChartTiff.com and ftp'ed the data to my computer. The hardest part of that was locating all of the DEM's I needed, but the way they organize the data made that easy too.Using the MicroDEM program with the ChartTiff data was painless and quick. The results were as I expected (the terrain looked accurate, what else could I want )and the UTM boundary trenches were present too. However, as most of you know, the UTM boundary trenches have nothing to do with the source of the data. If I remember correctly ChartTiff has a service to remove the UTM boundary problems. I did not look into that service and can not tell you anything about it except that it is available. If others are interested in this option but are not familiar with the different data formats available I'll tell you the correct format as there are several options. You want 'UTM WGS84 native zone projection'.In brief, I learned a lot by playing with the gisdatadepot free data and would have been very happy with that service if I could have gotten complete 10m or 30m resolution data. However, for me and the area I want to model it wasn't an option. So, for the cost of $1US/DEM (30m) I made the purchase and the resuilt is one less problem with my route building process. Hopefully some of my hair will grow back in place Well, now back to the fun stuff...Boomer Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Clearly, the free supplies of data may not suffice, and at $1/DEM, that is a pretty good price.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-01 AT 06:48 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-01 AT 06:47 PM (EST)I've had problems downloading dems from gisdatadepot in the form of truncated files. But I tried the link to Mapmart.com at L.K's http://sd40.topcities. and have had very good success(so far) with 20 + dems(both 10 & 30 meter dems are available for many quads) I've downloaded from their site Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-12-01, 10:59 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Re: DEM level 1 and level 3 merging problems..." Looks like an excellent source for data and the price is very favorable . Unfortunately, the data is only available in 10m or 30m resolutions, thus I would have had the same problems getting the data to merge. However, I know others have reported to successfully 'changing' the values of the 10m DEM's to allow compatablity with the 30m DEMs.I'll definately use mapmart.com for my next project.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
