Dec-11-01, 01:15 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Tapiola--A Finnish Dream (many graphics)" Complain: "To express feelings of pain, dissatisfaction, or resentment." From http://www.dictionary.comSo, according to this definition, which is how you want to examine things, expressing dissatisfaction would be considered a complaint.Examples from posts:"What's a Sante Fe engine doing in Finland?" The person posting this was not satisfied that things should be as they should be. If I had of had a locomotive in the picture that was from Finland, the person would have been satisfied with the picture."Well...it is flat...hmmm....But where are all the lakes? Put a sauna by a lake and it would be unmistakable." The person was dissatisfied that it was flat, and that no lake was in the pictures, no sauna was there either. Therefore, by your standards, I still maintain that out of the first three messages, two were complaints--and this is using your method of pointing out anomalies. My main point in that post was that I didn't even have two write but 7 words, and 2 out of 3 people complain. I have been accused of all sorts of traits--not positive ones either. Yet, when I write only 7 words, which can hardly be construed in the line of those accused of traits, 2 out of the first three responses are complaints. Now, to your point of Finnish. Let me ask you a question. Do you know what Turkish Delights are? If I say that I have a box of Turkish Delights, does that necessarily mean/imply that I traveled to Turkey to purchase these items. So, Finnish: "ADJECTIVE: Of or relating to Finland or its people, language, or culture." Notice the "or" in there. Relating to Finland **********OR**************, that does NOT mean it is *in* Finland, so, as I stated above, do not assume!Furthermore, if you look at the subject line, you see "A Finnish Dream," where Finnish is clearly being used as an adjective. What do we know about dreams? Usually, they are not true, there is something about them that is peculiar, not right. Dreams are not the real thing. Dreams can also mean goals, purposes in life. So, one can decipher that phrase to mean that something not quite real or it is a goal a goal, and it is related to Finland *********OR********* its people, language, or culture. There is something relating to Finland or its people, language, or culture--and there is. If you look at the history of Finland over the last 200 years, you will notice an event/events or goal/goals that involved Finland ***********OR*********** its people, language, or culture that is NOT in Finland. Hence, A Finnish Dream.Further, they did not ask if it was in Finland, they *assumed* it was and expressed their dissatisfaction (complained, see above) about it. So, in conclusion, again I say don't assume!Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-11-01, 04:28 PM (EST) 19. "RE: Tapiola--A Finnish Dream (many graphics)" Mr Lawrence,Firstly I was not complaining about any bloody thing except maybe now your attitude.I asked about Sante Fe engines in Finland as a passing 'dig'.You know what that means? Slight humour? Sheez...........I mentioned Finland not because of your reference to 'Finnish'
at all but because of the city 'Tapiola'.Can you find another meaning for that word in your dictionary?"Tapiola, «tap ee OH luh,» a community in the city of Espoo, Finland, became world famous as a model for city planning. It lies in southern Finland. A private organization and its sponsors founded Tapiola as a new community, or new town, in the 1950's. The founders tried to create a community that blends completely with its natural surroundings. They also wanted Tapiola to offer its inhabitants many types of employment, housing, and services so the community would be self-sufficient. Tapiola features a wide variety of architectural styles, and many walking paths. Some of Finland's best-known architects helped plan the community. Today, Tapiola is the largest business center of Espoo. But it does not yet provide jobs for all its inhabitants. Many of its approximately 35,000 people work nearby, especially in Helsinki."LIGHTEN UP, LAWRENCE!!!!Regards,
Laurie Whelan

Dec-11-01, 05:03 PM (EST) 22. "RE: Tapiola--A Finnish Dream (many graphics)" Mr./Ms. Laurie (don't know as I believe that spelling can be either way.)LIGHTEN UP LAURIE!See, I can shout too.Did you have any smiley face behind your statement that I missed? Because if you did, I apologize and will recognize it as a "dig" as you state it was meant to be.
Using the definition of "complain" that I cited above, and using the fact that you did not post a smiley face (at least according to my last read of your post which was 30 second ago), "complain" is an appropriate word, based on the denotation of the term and the lack of smiley face. Now, regarding my "bloody...attitude," my attitude has nothing to do with the simple fact that out of the first three comments about the thread, two, using the definition of "complain" as listed in a previous post AND the lack of emoticons, were "complaints." That is a fact. My attitude has nothing to do with the fact that I posted only pictures and 7 words, which could hardly be considered as having any attitudinal aspects to them, and 2 of the first three comments had, as explained above, complaints.>I mentioned Finland not because of
>your reference to 'Finnish'
>at all but because of the
>city 'Tapiola'. Have you ever heard of the city named "Portland"? Did you know there are three of them in the United States? Did you ever hear of the city "Calais"? Did you know there is one in France (I believe) and one in Canada? Have you ever heard of the city "Moscow"? There is one in Russia (or whatever the name is now days) and on in Idaho, USA. So, your pointing to the fact that Tapiola is the name of a city in Finland is STILL assuming that it MUST mean that one. Oh, and if you know anything about the Finnish language, the accent is ALWAYS on the first syllable of the word. So the pronounciation tap ee OH luh is incorrect, I don't care if you copied it out of a Dictionary, it is incorrect. The accent is not on the penultimate syllable, but always on the first. The problem here is that you assumed. You assumed that since the word Tapiola was used (or that the word Finnish was used) that it MUST mean that it is in Finland. Please read my other post where I talk about events that have happened in the last 200 years. So bottom line is this: if you don't assume, you won't find out that you are incorrect.Lawrenceps. Dec-11-01, 11:47 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Tapiola--A Finnish Dream (many graphics)" The yard is quite large. If I remember correctly, there are 4-5 main lines in the yard and each one branches into three. Each line in the yard is approximately 1 km long. There are also 5-6 "maintenance" spurs, each one Y into two tracks. I think that the yard will give one a lot of latitude for activities.ThanksLawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

>origin of your route name. Well, unlike PO&N, East Metro, Number 11, East Florida (or whatever it was called), Chicago L, etc., the name Tapiola--A Finnish Dream does not elicit thoughts of reality. Those other names *do* elicit thoughts of reality, existing locations. And Tapiola--A Finnish Dream does not point to Finland, per se.If you have read my post regarding the last 200 years, I have hinted to what Tapiola--A Finnish Dream is all about. There have been many people in the world, within the last 200 years, who have believed that moving from their homeland to another country could be a fulfillment of the ultimate dream. The movie Far and Away was just such a depiction. People flocked to the United States of America with the dream, goal, vision of having a better life than they had in the homeland, maybe nothing more than just a little bit better, but better nonetheless. And, when they flocked to the US of A, for the most part, they brought their customs, building styles, culture with them and incorporated those items, or merged those items, with existing or neighboring customs, building styles, cultures. Thus, out of that you have developing new customs, building styles, and cultures. These dreamers also, as a more or less general rule, congregated together, so you would have certain parts of a city or geography which would have an extremely high percentage of people from a certain country. It still exists today--you go to a certain district of a city and you can see a very high percentage of a particular ethnicity which does not exist that high in another part of the city. So, where in the US of A did the Finnish people congregate? Where is the highest concentration? That is the location of Tapiola--A Finnish Dream. The dream of opportunity, new times, better life, merging of cultures, simpleness, plenty of opportunity for hard workers. And it is the desire that Tapiola--A Finnish Dream will capture all of those points. So, as one person commented, you have wind electricity generators along side a simple farm yard and disintegrating buildings. Does it make sense? Certainly. As cultures mix, you will come up with many such combinations--combinations that on the surface seem like oxymorons, but aren't.Also, the rail lines of Tapiola--A Finnish Dream will have low speed limits, tight curves, and steep pitches. Why? Because not only does Tapiola--A Finnish Dream consider the dream, goal, of the immigrant, one that pointed to the future, but it also realizes that those immigrants also looked to the days of yore, yesterday, which at times seem better than the new found goal. So, this is why you do not have the geography of Finland...in fact, I don't even know what the geography of Finland is like except by looking at some maps and pictures. This is why you will see those oxymorons that I mentioned above. This is why the trees, land, waterways may have a more United States look--for it really is founded, located, in the United States. This is why you will see the industries of that area, but sometimes not as they are today, for Tapiola--A Finnish Dream also looks to the days of yore, as mentioned above. And this is why you can't make any assumptions--even to the point of the locomotive going down the tracksLawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-12-01, 10:02 AM (EST) 29. "RE: Tapiola--A Finnish Dream (many graphics)" Lawrence,
thanks for that. I don't think many other route builders put as much thought into the reason for being of their routes. The themes are familiar; I believe a quarter of the Norwegian population left home during the 1800's to find a new dream in the US. They looked for familiar territory but few found it, settling largely in the flat midwest (about as far from mountainous terrain you can get So they integrated the old with the new, like you do in your route. keep up the good work

Dec-12-01, 03:24 PM (EST) 32. "RE: Tapiola--A Finnish Dream (many graphics)" I got this "vision" while reading the remarkable story of a Finnish woman here in the United States. Her parents migrated from Finnland, and the route is geographically located close to the area she grew up in.I was impressed by her writing of the conditions of the US area before and after she was born. She explained in great detail, though it was not boring detail, what life was like. She even went back several years to her grandparents, who lived in Finland, and explained some what life was like there at that time.So it was with that book that I got the inspiration for this route.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-12-01, 03:20 PM (EST) 31. "RE: Tapiola--A Finnish Dream (many graphics)" I might well include some Finnish signs and signals. However, you have to realize that this route is in the United States, and from what I have read about immigrants and immigration, many immigrants were quite happy to learn the unofficial official language of their new home. And since the railroads of that time, I assume, were owned by railroad corporations, and not by local Finns, most of the language used would have been Finnish.However--and this is a BIG however--most of the names that I am using for settlements, etc., ARE Finnish names that I have scouted out via the Web. In fact, I have taken the real name of a lake which will be seen in the route and translated it into Finnish. I have also obtained pictures of buildings in Finland and it is my desire to 3D model some of them, or to use current buildings in our choices and reskin them. So, it is my desire to have a definitive "Finnish" air about it. But, is it in Finland? Nope.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
