Dec-04-01, 10:27 PM (EST) "Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" Here are the screenshots of the start of Stevens Pass. Quick Question. I just happen to realize that each of those little tiles are 2km (3.2 Miles) I was wondering what tiles I should tag off. I know I should leave some distance away, but should I be one tile on each side from the actual line?
Thanks!Brian E. Bundridge

Dec-04-01, 11:31 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" Alot will depend on the terrain. Generally the width of one tile on either side of your line is enough. Sometime (like if your line is at the bottom of a canyon) a lot less will do. Occasionally, in the right terrain, you can see further than the width of a tile, but this is pretty rare. (Unless you have "distant mountains" which is a whole other problem.) The main thing you'd like to avoid is a stark right angle corner of sky being visible on those nearby hills. For that, I think that the width of one tile on either side is a good rule of thumb.Steve

Dec-04-01, 11:40 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" Best way to decide is to look at the way they did it. In the areas like Columbia Falls - Kalispell where it's open country and you can see a good distance from the train, they ran the tiles out a little further from the track. The distance to the edge is a lot closer to the track in places where it runs thru a valley or has treeblocks on both sides. One trick would be to place a skyscraper at the near corners of the tiles you're thinking about deleting, and drive the route in an external view to decide if you can do without it. Don't forget to delete the skyscrapers afterwards, of course, they'd look kind of wierd on the finished route. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-05-01, 00:11 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" Since I have already done that route....If the route runs smack in the middle of the tile, either heading east/west or north/south, then 3 tiles are enough. If it is of to one side a bit, then four. If it is running diagnal, you have to be sure to have the corners covered.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-05-01, 06:57 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" Brian,
I have a great 15 page article which covers the history and
operations on Stevens Pass from Railfan magazine (April 1993).
I'd be happy to send you a copy of the article if you don't
already have it. This is a great route and even had electric
operations from 1909 until 1956, good luck on your project.

>Miles) You got your figures mixed up...
2 km = 1.25 miles
2 miles = 3.2 km
(1 mile = 1604 meters or 1.604 km)Message Areas - "Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" – image 3 Nalle Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-05-01, 11:01 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" Brian, the best way to approach this is (I speak from experience) to leave the extra tiles in place untill you complete the entire section/phase. With the route finished and backed up of course, experiment by deleting small numbers of tiles at a time. Based on your screen shots, I would even add a few extra tiles in some places to cover all your bases (no pun intended!).Erik... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-06-01, 00:02 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Stevens Pass, Phase 1 underway" Stating this again, having laid track for most if not all of that route, I can say unequivacally that tiles MUST be added. There are places in that screen shot where the route is within 100 meters of the edge of the tile.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
