Dec-04-01, 12:31 PM (EST) "What's wrong with the tdb" Once again the route editor decided to destroy everything like it always does. I added(and later removed)some track on tile -10971,14370, and it finds error on tile -10971,14367. Last track change on that tile was 3 weeks ago and I have rebuilt the database every day. I tested this by placing one piece to different place with same results. What kind of "rebuild" is this?
It does nothing but crashes. I was very close to release another beta, but this causes some delay(again) as I don't know what's wrong this time. Is anybody making new route editor? I think they compiled this from leftover bugs from other programs...Enocell Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-04-01, 01:10 PM (EST) 1. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" First, from everything I have read/heard aboutthe rebuild option, it is to be used only when something is wrong, not used on an everyday operation. On my large route (~1,600 tiles), I have rebuilt the database maybe twice; and I believe that one of those times I didn't need to rebuild it--the problem was caused by my error. On my small route (~200 tiles), I haven't rebuilt it yet. Using the rebuild function everyday is like changing the tires on your car every day! You don't do it unless the tire is flat, or fresh snow, or spring...you get the idea.My suggestion, and I doubt if you're going to like it, is to go back to the last beta release, start over from there, and do NOT do any rebuilds unless there is something wrong.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-06-01, 03:41 PM (EST) 5. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" Remember that you may lose everything on one tile. It has happened many times for me, but somehow those were almost empty tiles(except the worst case). I had to delete every piece of track and all scenery, and then rebuild the entire tile in RGE. After that the route editor stopped crashing(it crashed when I placed track to the faulty tile). That error was "made" a month before that unsuccesful tdb rebuild, so all backups were corrupt also. After that I started to rebuild the database often and save older backups and this has saved my route dozens of times.Enocell Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-04-01, 03:30 PM (EST) 2. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" Enocell;I'm with Lawrence, doing rebuilds may be a bad thing. I've only done one on my route and that was the wrong thing to do. It was in the first week and I now realize that I did the wrong thing. Most of the errors that I come accross I ignore, exit and restart the PC and they are gone. They are false errors I believe caused by low memory. For example, I'll get errors that the 100m straight road section couldn't be found. Yet I know it is there and used a 1000 times. I exit and restart and boom, no errors and the road is there.David Klemm

Dec-06-01, 04:02 PM (EST) 6. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" Lawrence;Nope not yet. Partly do to time and the other is lack of knowledge. Also, not all parts of the IC have signals, but use work orders.David Klemm

Dec-04-01, 11:33 PM (EST) 4. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-01 AT 11:48 PM (EST)Hey All,
I was doing my 30 minute edit sesssion when I lost track of time and the editor started to crash. So I tried to save and exit but wasn't fast enough. It bombed the whole system in the middle of the save. When I came back in there was a phantom piece of track that I couldn't delete so I rebuilt the track database. Now the track joints are all messed up on the steeper grades. Cajon Pass with speed bumps. I agree that rebuilding the TDB is a last resort type of thing. Backing up is an every day thing. Dec-06-01, 06:14 PM (EST) 7. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" I've just spent more than 5 hours manually rebuilding my track database...I did a major change and after I was finished I saved my work (as usually) then I went in to the Activity editor and ALL of my tracks where gone except for the last major change (one day work).I sort of panicked and went back and replaced all the *.bk files, that didnt help a bit. I then used the rebuild option, NO CHANGE. All the tracks where laying there very nice, but still nothing in the activity editor. Then I remembered something I did a long time ago when I was still a novice, and I went in to the route editor, selected edit mode and picked one track at a time. didn't change or do anything only selecting every single track in my route. Saved the work and did a check in the activity editor again, and the tracks I've selected showed up nicely. So I then returned to the route editor and did the rest, took me about 5 hours to redo the hole lot.Anyone experienced anything like this or something similar??I could have gone back and used my backup, but i'd say now that 5 hours is better than a day of work...)RuO Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-06-01, 08:54 PM (EST) 8. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" I recall seeing reports about memory leaks in the Route editor,
(memory not being released when no longer needed).
Could this be the cause of some of the problems? If so, maybe leaving a small program running that shows
percent of memory used, and shut Route Editor down and reboot
before it gets too close to full utilization. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-06-01, 11:58 PM (EST) 10. "RE: What's wrong with the tdb" Hey All,
I've read in here that signals and speed limits should be the
last things added to your route. When you edit with signals present the route editor hoses the tdb. I lost the first 2 days work on my route that way. Best Regards
