Dec-02-01, 05:34 PM (EST) "Route Control by How In The World" Has anybody heard about Route Control?
I found this by chance visiting the How In The World web site, the guys who made Sky! Conductor:http://www.howintheworld.com/routecontrol.shtmlIt looks very promising... I wonder what is this "virtual directory" technique that is supposed to save hundreds of megabytes... it has to be some form of directory sharing, but I thought you couldn't do it with Win 9x... Any thoughts? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Route Control by How In The World" looks interesting but what i wanna know is how is it going to know exactly what items you will need to d/l for the activities. e.g. there are many many mikados out there how is going to know exactly which one you need? will it say you need the USRA mikado for example or will it just say you need a mikado? anyone know the answer to this? The shows the "Missing Wagons" section only. In addition to this, on the actual report are "Activities", "Services", "Consists", and "Missing Locomotives" sections.I figured that showing a piece of an actual report (from one of our beta tester's systems) would give a more clear idea of how it works.

Dec-05-01, 03:56 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Route Control by How In The World" Jak,I havn't tried your program yet, but I had been thinking about putting all of my rolling stock into folders with names that made some sense to me, making things easier to keep track of and find. Would it be possible for your program to change the activity to point to the folder where the file was found (green name lines) rather than having to have the car/engine in the folder that the activity wants it in? Dec-05-01, 04:21 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Route Control by How In The World" Jak,
I havn't tried your program yet, but I had been thinking about putting all of my rolling stock into folders with names that made some sense to me, making things easier to keep track of and find. Would it be possible for your program to change the activity to point to the folder where the file was found (green name lines) rather than having to have the car/engine in the folder that the activity wants it in?
David,The problem-finding feature in Route Control is designed to be a simple, quick, and convenient method of discovering troubles with Train Sim before they cause it to crash. It gives a list of any activities that are missing trains and warns the user not to use these activities until the missing trains are installed. We had given quite a bit of thought and even did some experimentation with allowing activities to actually be altered by the program, but in the end it turned out that all of that would have added more complexity to the user experience than was necessary. Because activities also rely on services, and services rely on consists, and consists rely on finding trains in certain spots, there is a lot to do in order to simply change a folder name in an activity! The core reason for Route Control in this case (easy installation of routes and space saving) would have been lost in the mix.Once Route Control is finished, we do have plans for a "Train Control" utility that will be more geared towards the trains themselves, with a full consist editor, activity alterations, easy train installation, one-click cab and sound aliasing, etc. so that might be more up your alley in terms of what you're looking for.Regards,
Jak Fearon

"RE: Route Control by How In The World" LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-01 AT 09:03 PM (EST)I wonder what is this "virtual directory" technique that is supposed to save hundreds of megabytes... it has to be some form of directory sharing, but I thought you couldn't do it with Win 9x...About the space saved, here's a post from our Beta forum by one of the beta testers. I hope he doesn't mind me putting this here.
Including the 6 standard routes I have 32 routes installed. My Train Simulator folder is 3.38GB with 1.3GB in the Trains folder and subfolders with another 972 zip files of rolling stock on another drive yet to be installed (which totals anothe 2GB in compressed form). Not bad when the last time we all boasted about size in the train-sim forum I had 11GB.If I had had all the routes before that I have now, I reckon I have saved about 13GB in space. Thanks Jak

Dec-05-01, 11:39 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Route Control by How In The World" LAST EDITED ON Dec-05-01 AT 11:58 AM (EST)When it will be available? I'd like to get it ASAP to release my route before the xmas, but I don't want to make the distribution file with dos batches as there's always problems with them(at least seems to be).By the way, my TS partition has 7,22GB used and 683Mb unused
There's only train sim folder...
I guess some of my route backups must be moved to another place.Enocell Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-05-01, 04:25 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Route Control by How In The World" When it will be available? I'd like to get it ASAP to release my route before the xmas, but I don't want to make the distribution file with dos batches as there's always problems with them(at least seems to be).Enocell,Although Route Control will allow people to install routes without having to mess with batch files all of the time, there will of course be those people who aren't using it. For that reason I definitely think you should still include the batch file with your route distribution. We're also working on the free "Route Packer" utility I mentioned a while back that will zip routes up for distribution, making sure everything needed is included in the zip. I've just gotten so busy finishing up Route Control that the "packer" had to sit in the back of the class for a while. Jak Fearon
