Nov-29-01, 12:11 PM (EST) "How to lay a track across another track ?" Hi,I was very impressed by the turntable shown in the "Track Magic" post.I'm working on the design of an old steam engine shed in France, but I don't know how to lay a track across another one. When I have laid a first track section, if I try to lay a second one across, it snaps to the first one. I can I avoid it ?Thanks to give me the solution. I have not found the answer in the archive.Pascal Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-01 AT 12:31 PM (EST)Well, I may be mistaken (because why would I try it so I'd know for sure?), but If you do this would you get a derailed train when they hit the crossing? I thought if you have two rails meeting or crossing you need to use the switch or crossover track sections otherwise collision properties took over. Now if you meant cross at different altitudes, that's different:
So that doesn't happen build the approach to the crossing first so that you have a different track to snap the track piece to rather than the one you are trying to go over or under. And if you /are/ trying to make a crossover...
See Michael Vone's nice charts on track crossings here in the forum by doing a search or in his book by buying it. You need to use bits of dynamic track at odd lengths to make the crossing work.-Andy

Nov-29-01, 01:50 PM (EST) 4. "RE: How to lay a track across another track ?" Andy;Nope. If you look there are no cross overs pre-built like a turn out. You have an infinite amount of crossover abilities. In my route, I have 3 Illinois Central tracks crossing over 5 Wabash (NS) tracks at almost 90 degrees.David Klemm

Nov-29-01, 02:32 PM (EST) 5. "RE: How to lay a track across another track ?" Heh. That's funny... Maybe now that TSM is out someone will make more than the 5/10 Xovers since laying tracks across each other makes for some funky looking tracks. Just curious (other than subway/light rail which have all kinds of bizarre crossovers) how often do railroads use non-switchable crossovers?
I would think they'd make for some signalling nightmares.-Andy

Nov-29-01, 03:34 PM (EST) 6. "RE: How to lay a track across another track ?" Cross overs are usually guarded by a signal today. Or in the case of an industrial switching area in Decatur, by a swinging gate! In the tracks between Clinton and Pana, I've got about 3 or 4 in the 50 miles. These crossovers use to also have towers near them to control traffic.David Klemm

Nov-30-01, 12:37 PM (EST) 8. "RE: How to lay a track across another track ?" Is there a way to get signals to work at a crossover? Once I created a test track with a crossover and made an AI train pass in front of me. It did without trouble but the signal still showed green.Joe Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
