Nov-28-01, 05:57 AM (EST) "Signals and Stations" I am looking for some signals (2 aspect red over green, 3 aspect red over amber over green and dwarf signals for use in marshalling yards etc) and an assortment of stations and platforms that I can download for experimental track building purposes. MSTS editor tools have virtually nothing. Is anyone aware of a way in which I can extract these items from existing routes or is there a site where they can be downloaded from? Trainsim.com is also lacking in these items. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-28-01, 10:48 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Signals and Stations" I will assume by your screen name you're Austrailian, I know nothing of Austrailian signal rules. In the forum file section there is a file containing a set of searchlight(target) signals conforming to US standards. They display the R/G indication for a diverging route as well as a distant signal for approach diverging. There is also a single head, 3 indication dwarf signal in the set.If you point me to a source of Austrailian signal standards, I'll see if I can modify the searchlight script to emulate your rules. For the R/Y/G indication, you need to perform some slight of hand graphic and script techniques.Hank Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-28-01, 04:48 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Signals and Stations" Hank. Many thanks for the information and your offer to produce signals to Australian standards. Unfortunately I don't have the information or know where to obtain it. Perhaps there are some other aussies who frequent this messageboard who have the information.I am not necessarily trying to model Australian railways at the moment but more experimenting and getting the feel of how to do things. There is a lot to learn and at this stage, procedure is more important than the finished product so anything that resembles signals and stations will keep me out of mischief for the time being.I will get hold of the signals as you auggest and see where I go from there. Many thanksBrian Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-28-01, 11:01 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Signals and Stations" I think you misspelled "feldecarb", Andy. Altho I don't know how it was supposed to be spelled anyway. Aussiebob, if you extracted a route and it only has one signal in it, copy sigcfg.dat and sigscr.dat from the route you want, there's also a compiled version somewhere (that one of yours, Hank?) to use more than one type of signal. I make dwarfs just by lowering the post into the ground. Nov-28-01, 11:16 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Signals and Stations" Bob do want Nsw Aspects Or Vic Aspects or some other .
The previosly mentioned searclight signals (by Conn McCarthy and Hank Sundermeyer )scripts can be modified so can the existing BNSF ones. I am currently tring to do Melbourne to Ballarat in Victoria and experimenting with a modification of Conn & Hanks signals Mick

Nov-28-01, 11:55 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Signals and Stations" Mick, I am not too concerned at this stage as to what "brand" of signals I use. I live in Queensland, have lived in NSW and know very little about Victorian signals. I am interested in obtaining a varied selection of different signal and platform/station types to experiment with route building etc etc.If you have Vic and NSW signals available I would love to include them in my collection (mind you the collection is very very sparse) as I need to understand the rudiments of placement, workings and anything else that applies to each of these items.I am also interested in signals that indicate a change of track in standard, gantry and even perhaps dwarf formats as well as standard signal types.I am in the process of experimenting with single and double slips, turntable, 250m 5 10 and 20 degree curves and a host of other MSTS non-included track pieces and as a result have a need also for signalling equipment that can be associated with these items. It seems that my list of "needs" is endless. Anything you or anyone else can point me in the direction of would be greatly appreciated.Cheers,

Nov-29-01, 00:06 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Signals and Stations" Brian,Victoria uses a similar speed signalling system to many systems in the US.Chris Gordon's magnificent site at
http://www1.railpage.org.au/vicsig/
has the most comprehensive description of Victorian upper and lower quadrant semaphores and colour-light signals in existence.I'm waiting for someone to make our lower quadrant semaphore signals.RegardsYuri.

Nov-29-01, 10:51 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Signals and Stations" The link to the Victorian signals was very informative. If you haven't come across it already, my site at:
http://raildata.railfan.net
has information on (Eastern)US signal practices past and present.I've revamped the searchlight signal and will be releasing them soon. Slightly larger file, but more graphics detail.Screen capture 1 shows the diverging clear indication discussed in the initial thread message. If the next signal were displaying 'stop', this signal would be showing Red/Flashing Yellow.Message Areas - "Signals and Stations" – image 2Screen capture 2 shows a gantry signal closeup.Message Areas - "Signals and Stations" – image 3If the graphic settings look familiar, in spite of the gray overcast, it's the tutorial route heavily edited with loops and diverging routes to test my signals and scripts with various activities.

Nov-29-01, 03:52 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Signals and Stations" LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-01 AT 03:53 PM (EST)Hank,Regarding your comment about red over flashing yellow...Reading from the BNSF Signal Aspects and Indications document, it says "Proceed on diverging route not exceeding prescribed speed through turnout prepared to pass next signal not exceeding 35 MPH."As I interpret that, it means you are at a diverging location, will take the divergence at timetable speed or less, and will be prepared to pass the next signal no faster than 35 MPH. It doesn't say anything about upcoming divergences, just about the one this signal protects. So, in developing the scripts for MP3.0, I didn't use red over flashing yellow as an advance indication. For a divergence at the next signal, I used a double yellow aspect of an Approach Medium. A single flashing yellow is also Approach Medium. This says "Proceed prepared to pass next signal not exceeding 40 MPH and be prepared to enter diverging route at prescribed speed." To me, this means the next signal may or may not be diverging, but you should expect it to show an Approach or Diverging Approach indication. It seems logical to me that flashing yellow over red, or by itself, would be in advance of an approach indication for a normal switch, and red over flashing yellow would mean the same thing for a diverging switch, but as I interpret the text for the indication, that isn't the case.Am I missing something? Nov-29-01, 06:04 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Signals and Stations" LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-01 AT 06:08 PM (EST)Hi, bobsI should have made the explanation of R/FlY more clear. My railroad runs under NORAC rules which have some differences from BNSF and allied western railroads.
Red over Flashing Yellow, Rule 286, 'Medium Approach,' paraphrased says slow to medium speed as soon as the indication is clearly visible, perparing to stop at next signal. The distant signal to this one was showing Y/G, Rule 282 Approach Medium. If the signal showing 286 had three head, the indication would have been Red over Yellow over Red. No flashing aspects.
Thanks for keeping me honest.Go to the site I referenced, it has a JAVA applet demonstrator of the NORAC rules. You'll find significant differences.

Nov-29-01, 07:57 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Signals and Stations" Or,as in my case, just check the 2000 NORAC Rule Book. :=3
The route I'm coming up with will follow NORAC as much as possible. That's one thing that would be changed in MSTS, how it reads speed as you pass a signal. :=/Most of the time you don't slow down to the required speed until AFTER you're past the signal. There are signals that you START slowing down when the signal is CLEARLY visible. In case of a curve of reduced visiblity, you may be closer than braking distance. :=/ Yes, I know I'm repeating what I said in a previous post, but it still irrates me. :=/Now, I just run the signal indics, and forget what the "Evaluation" states at the end of the "game".--

Nov-29-01, 10:27 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Signals and Stations" Oh, NORAC. Well, that explains it! The GCOR signal rules used by the western RRs are clearly different, even though the signals may look the same physically.I'm now reasonably sure that I'm not going nuts!I've looked at that NORAC simulator before, and it is a very nice app. Takes all the guess work out of it. Nov-29-01, 08:04 PM (EST) 15. "RE: Signals and Stations" LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-01 AT 08:06 PM (EST)Hank,I got your, IIRC, searchlight signals, and they look and work great. :=3 Now if I could get the real one, that is sitting on my front porch, hooked up to my model RR. :=3 (Actually, it wouldn't be that hard to do.)Question for you. Any possibilty of you doing the "tri-color" signals like NJT, on the Atlantic City Line, and some routes, notably the Airport (R1?) Line, of SEPTA?You know the type:-Y G
--R(dashes put in to preserve ASCII art. :=/ )
all on the same "head".Thanks for considering.

Nov-30-01, 07:35 AM (EST) 18. "RE: Signals and Stations" I can make those, but I need diagrams or good text dimensions for the head, lamp spacing, mast heights, whether or not the interval signal heads are staggered. I have some idea of what they look like on the NJC line mounted on the catenary poles.

(must be a way)does the route editor size affect act editor size? then i could switch to 1280x1024 and then copy/pastethose type of signals and gantries would be good, the american gantries are ugly********************************

Dec-01-01, 09:26 AM (EST) 21. "RE: Signals and Stations" Not exactly sure what you're referring to as 'ugly american gantries.' If you mean the stock stuff in MSTS, there's nothing there that's 'american' in any form. If you're referring to my graphics, well, they weren't made for public distribution. They represent something more of what I'm use to seeing.
New US signal gantries are truely ugly. They are made of tubular aluminum and look more like interstate highway signposts rather than railroad apparatus. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-01-01, 04:52 AM (EST) 20. "RE: Signals and Stations" Howdy, I would LOVE to see the signal bridge!!!! Here is a question, What are the chances of getting ANY US semaphores (Hopefully a CNW prototype ) or the IC/RI/SSW triangular tri-light signals? Also, can you modify your searchlight shields to a "oval" type? These are just curious questions, as I LOVE signals, and signal bridges!!!
Cant wait for the new release!!!Kelley Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-01-01, 09:59 AM (EST) 22. "RE: Signals and Stations" I've made a set of vertical alignment tricolor signals in the northeast railroad style. They're not tested.
A forum member has provided me with drawing of those 'odd' looking horizontal alignment tricolor signals of the CNW. They're on the 'to do' list.Done, but not fully tested:
Revamped NEC CPL's/mast, gantry, dwarf's
PRR style PL's/mast, gantry, dwarf's
CSX/B&O style CPL's/mast, gantry, dwarf's
CNJ style tricolor/mast, gantry, dwarf'sI need someone to share tech data and drawings on the triangular alignment tricolor signals before I launch into set of those. For those who have mentioned the need for the 'Medium Approach Medium', Rule 283a, RED over YELLOW over GREEN. I have found a way to do it, albeit hoaky. It only appears on a 3 head signal and the method can be used on the 3 head signal with two or three links working.
