Nov-27-01, 05:30 AM (EST) "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" Don’t know if anyone is interested but I thought I should post some pictures of something I’ve been working on lately.A Double Slip! Do I dare to enter it?
(I’m using John’s new C-liners cause I don’t want to risk a G&D engine)
Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 1 And here is what was on the other side, a turntable you can drive over and with connections every 10 degrees without
the need for hidden tracks (ok, you do not need to connect them all). Only problem is it’s not turning.
Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 2Hmm, this looks interesting. Where might that track lead?
Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 3 Narrow gauge C-Liner?
Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 4 Now, that looks better!
Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 5 This all started because I needed a slip for Austin Street at Great Divide yard.
When I enabled it I realised that in order for anyone else to be able to run the route they need to update
their installation the same way and not everyone like to dig in deep into those files to make it work.
Thus I’ve made a self-installing package to include the missing shapes. All tracks work and I’ve included those pieces that were shipped with the game but not available including single-/double-slips, 250M curves and more.
I’ve tested this on my own copy of MSTS but I’d like some beta-testers before making it public.
Are there any volunteers? Mind you it might screw up your installation big time unless you make a backup first.Below is the list of new track sections:
77 : a1tSglSlip10d - Single slip
78 : a1tDblSlip10d - Double slip
110 : a2tSkewLft - Two track left skew
190 : us1Rd2l1000r10d - Two lane 1000M 10 degree road
220 : a1tPnt5dRgtMnl - Point 5 degree right manual switch
222 : a1t45dYardRgtMnl - Point 45 degree right manual yard switch
224 : a1tPnt2_5dRgtMnl - Point 2.5 degree right manual switch
241 : a2t10PedesCrs - Two track pedestrian crossing
242 : a1tSglSlip10dMnl - Single slip manual
243 : a1tDblSlip10dMnl - Double slip manual
244 : a1t250r5d - 250M 5 degree
245 : a1t250r10d - 250M 10 degree
246 : a1t250r20d - 250M 20 degree
247 : a2t250r5dTun - Two track 250M 5 degree tunnel
248 : a1t2000r10dTun - 2000M 10 degree bent tunnel
249 : a1t2000r20dTun - 2000M 20 degree bent tunnel
250 : a1tSglSlip10dEnd - Special piece to make Single slips work
251 : a1tDblSlip10dEnd - Special piece to make Double slips work
252 : a2tXoverEnd - Two track cross over end piece (shape corrupt)
253 : a1t27Turntable - Turntable
300 : n1t30mstrt - 30M Narrow gauge straightI also would like to hear from anyone that has made any other new track pieces if we could include those in the package as well.
Especially a set of narrow gauge tracks would be nice. The one narrow gauge track piece I’ve included here (3 feet 30M straight) is converted from a normal track piece.

Does it work fully or does it only stay in one place? I'm just curious it looks pretty cool. Nov-27-01, 06:15 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" LAST EDITED ON Nov-27-01 AT 06:27 PM (EST)I just thought of a couple of more switches, special track pieces, to get thrown in the mix. They would be especially helpful in crowded passenger terminal areas. (Hint, hint) :=3They are:
Scissors crossover also known as a double crossover
3 way switch
Curved turnouts for use on curves
Gauntlet track for those real tight places and you want to run that double track mainline. Like the B&P Tunnel in Baltimore. :=3--

Nov-27-01, 08:06 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" Many, many will be pleased by the narrow gauge track,I like Captain Bazza's "Patrick" in Bazza-motion on that narrow gauge, I have often thought about the turntable question, (regarding the ability to work) aliasing its control functions (turntables)to the cabs of locomotives, and driving the turntable to the proper diverging track by giving it an engine(file) like real steam? or electric powered turntables, they turn on the rail in the pit, with a flanged wheel powered by cylinder and rod or gears, left and right, forward and reverse, it would need to work every time, and of course I may just be daydreaming, and that maybe because I know other games with the ability to "jump" to next cockpit in sequence, why not locomotive to turntable operator,to AI train etc. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-28-01, 05:42 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" I would love to test your track pieces. I am just starting a new route design so could incorporate them quite easily. I am also very interested in the narrow gauge aspect particularly as we in Australia still have a number of narrow gauge working private railways hauling sugar cane using both steam and diesel locos. Nov-28-01, 12:06 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" Ok, seems like we need some clarifications here.
Most of these track sections were included on your CD but not enabled for one or another reason. I’ve rectified this with help from information gained by others on this forum; I do not claim to originate all the ideas on how to get it to work. Amongst others I’d like to mention Jim Steven and Raymond Kalousdian. My main contribution is to put it all in one complete package that even your grandma should be able to use (after having it beta-tested).
The turntable is the one from Whitefish, not a new model. I’ve changed it into a track section to make it easier to work with. You no longer have to carefully place a hidden track section across it to be able to drive over it and you can connect tracks every 10 degrees around the perimeter. It does NOT turn, sorry.
Last I’ve done a few new shapes by practicing some private Voodoo; the single & double slip end pieces to make it easier to work with the slips (Raymond used dynamic track to make them work but I thought it would be easier if there was a specially tailored track section) and the narrow gauge straight which is just an ordinary 50M straight reduced to 60% giving a 0.9M gauge 30M straight (MSTS normal gauge is 1.5M if you look in tsection.dat). It’s nothing fancy, just a trial to see if it works.
You can actually specify different gauges but it seems like the sim doesn’t care in this version. You can drive a normal gauge engine on narrow gauge track and you can connect and drive over track sections of different gauges. I do hope that later versions of the sim will take this into consideration. I have not done any serious 3D modelling and was kind of hoping that maybe someone could model some narrow gauge tracks. I would be willing to take on the job of getting them into the sim. Same thing with other types of track sections; if someone can make a proper textured 3D-shape of a 5 degree Y-switch or a 3-way Y-switch I would be happy to help getting it to work.Gauntlet track sections and dual gauge is not needed as Nalle said. You can put two tracks slightly offset to give the impression of these tracks (that’s how the third picture was taken).
I have not tried this with signals but I think they should work as expected, the slips are nothing different than a number of switches put together. The reason I’ve taken on this job is that if people start to add their own track sections we will pretty soon end up in a situation where we can’t share routes because they depend on some special track that you’ve added in one place in tsection.dat that I use for a completely different track section. We’ll end up having the same problem as when people add trains with different name folders only on a larger scale as tsection.dat is ONE global file used by ALL your routes. If you use the double slip in a route and want to share that route with your neighbour (or anybody else) you better make sure he has updated his tsection.dat exactly the same way you did or you can’t share routes.I will now send the installer out to those brave volunteers that do not care if their sim brakes (make a backup of the globals-folder and you should be able to get it back in working order).
If you have any problems please feel free to contact me.Good luck!

Nov-29-01, 10:31 AM (EST) 23. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" A caution, which you already mentioned, but which I would like to expand. If you add these track sections to your main track database, and if you share your route, you MUST include the main track database. Unfortuantely, this will lead to either my routes crashing or your route crashing. Let me give an example from my own experience. (I may be a little shaky on some of the finer details.)I had modified my main track database to include the single slip. Someone came up with a way to activate the 250 degree curves, and they supplied the main track database. My route started crashing. It took several days to figure out what was happening, and that only after restoring backups, reinstalling MSTS, and other such nice little activities.I finally was able to pin it down to a particular world tile, and upon examining it, I found that it was the single slip that was causing the problem. See, the main track database that I got from another person didn't have the single slip activated, therefore, it caused the system to crash.Also--and this I am assuming, I haven't tested it and I don't want to test it--I have to assume that MS will come out with a patch and activate those pieces. When this happens, all our routes that have the track section numbers arbitrarily assigned, will also crash. II use 477 as a defining location for a particular track and MS puts it in 476, crash. So, whereas it sound nice a great, this venture *is* fraught with crashes!Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-29-01, 11:47 AM (EST) 25. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" If we can get a 'standard' expanded main track database you would not need to include it. The other option, using nothing but what is enabled on the CD is not an option for me and I think others agree.
I see your point and I share your concern. I only hope that if we can get the community to use a common expanded track section database that Kuju will be considerate enough to take that into account when the next version arrives.
I've already heard from the beta-testers that we have a problem with diverging databases and you yourself had similar experiences. The sooner we can get everybody on a common track the better I say. Many of the added track sections are used in limited numbers and it's relatively easy to change to a common standard (I've tried to see what happens when you move things around in that file). I think the main problem is actually the 250 meter radius curves that might be used in quite some numbers on certain routes.
Another problem which will occur is who is to say which tracks get added and on which numbers? I've started this thread but am I qualified to take on that position? Is anybody qualified? I hope we can work something out but there are problems to overcome.

Nov-28-01, 07:04 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-01 AT 07:26 PM (EST)Okay, I got the package and decided to give some of the pieces a "whirl", namely the double and single slips.I may be missing something simple, but I can't get the double slips to work with their special pieces. The singles on the other hand. Well I have some screen shots that tell the story.I'm using searchlight signals, like the SP,so what better way than to test the slips than with an SP Daylight.Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 10I hope this isn't a "cornfield" meet in the making.Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 11Thank goodness those new single slipswitches work!Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 12
So the verdict on the single slipswitches is a thumbs up. I even got those "triple" and "double" head searchlight signals to work thru them with no problem. :=3 They are fully interlocked with the switches.The only problem I have, and it's a problem with MSTS, is the one I have stated before, you can't stack the switches. :={
The two slips are separated by a 2m "dynamic" track piece.
Hmmm. A thought just occured to me. You can take the "dynamic" track sections down to 0.00m. Would it see it as there but as a "dummy" track piece. I'll have to check it out. :=/

Nov-28-01, 08:08 PM (EST) 15. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" I tried my idea with the "Dynamic" track section set at 0.00m. No dice.I thought of something else, and I tried it. The following picture tells the story.Message Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 13It seems you CAN stack switches, with this proviso, the first one must come off of a "diverging" route of another switch. BTW, you can stack as many switches off of both "legs" of a "Y" switch with no problems. There are NO "Dynamic" track sections used in the above examples. :=3As you can see yard ladders ARE possible, as is crossing multi-track mainlines with slip switches, which is what I was after. :=3--

Nov-29-01, 04:01 AM (EST) 17. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" Placing the double slip the special end piece should be placed to cancel out all the blue lines inside the slip. Be careful to place the end piece at the first blue line of the slip or it will not work. Maybe I should include some pictures in the final release to help people out with these tricky issues. The problem when stacking switches and slips is that you're not allowed to place two switches back-to-back (ie red line to red line) this the editor tells you when you try to do it.
In those ladders you've built you're fine cause the next switch/slip is on a connection with a blue line.
It might be possible to alter the switches to allow back-to -back placement. I will look into that to see if it works.I've got a request from another beta tester to move the 250 meter curves to id's 241(10degrees), 242(20degrees) & 243(5degrees). Any objections? They have already used miles of tracks with these ids and would face a major problem to remake it.May I add that you should not do any major work based on the beta track-pack as it may still change. I hope to have another beta out next week.

The name would not change but the list of pieces woudl sort in adifferent order with the 250 meter radius curves before the slips. MSTS uses the ids to identify the track in your routes track database and the name is corresponding to the name of the s-file for the shape.Nalle, you've got mail.

"RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-01 AT 04:45 PM (EST)Thanks.I was "playing" wiyh an "isolated" double switch and figured it out. :=3I started "laying" track for a route that is based on a layout I would like to build and I'm using the double slips in the throat to the passenger terminal, just like I showed.I found a great reason for being able to lay track on top of each other. I use the ability to line up switches in the throat area. :=3 Makes it a lot easier than laying some track then finding the switches don't line up. I use a 500m section of track then line the switches up using the other switches as a base. Saves on some "weird" curves in the station area. :=3Thanks again for the new track. The slips make it easier. :=3--

Nov-30-01, 02:45 AM (EST) 27. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" If I understand the graphics correctly, starting with the double-slip switch, a train could run from SE to NW OR SE to NE. Trains coming from the NW could run NW to SE or NW to SW. The single-slip switch allows trains to run SE to NW or SE to NE BUT trains from the NW can ONLY run SE. Obviously, the crossing only allows traffic to run SE to NW or SW to NE.If your intent was to depict what I've just stated, your graphics make your answer crystal clear. Thanks for taking the time to design and explain slips and crossovers! Nov-30-01, 05:16 AM (EST) 28. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" In the double slip coming from south you can exit any of the north tracks and coming form north you can exit any of the south tracks.
In the single slip you can only do this if you approach the slip on one of the eastbound tracks. Coming on one of the westbound tracks (NW or SW) the only direction you can go is straight across like you would do in the simple crossing.

Nov-30-01, 10:10 AM (EST) 29. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" IMHO, the narrow-gauge thing is the most important of your discoveries. I do hope somebody from Kuju sees this and puts it on the list for a possible update/patch (while at the same time turning the default Japanese routes into 1067 mm narrow gauge, too ). Now, if it were then also possible to lay standard AND narrow-gauge (maybe even broad gauge at some point) trackage in the same scenario...WHOA!

Nov-30-01, 10:39 AM (EST) 30. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-01 AT 10:40 AM (EST)It is my friend, it is!
Look at my pictures number 3, 4 & 5.
In #3 you've got 3 rail standard/narrow gauge, you can drive on both.
In #4 you have the C-liner rumbling on the narrow gauge while the standard track turns to the left.
And in #5 you have the Climax at the same location with the standard gauge to the left.
Only issue seems to be that the sim does not care about the gauge. You can run any engine on any gauge track.
Thing is I don't recall seeing anything about gauge in the eng-file for engines/wagons.
Might be added in the future, probably with a default as standard gauge.

Nov-30-01, 01:55 PM (EST) 31. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" Did you ever look closely in one of the route .TRK files (well, I'm sure you did )? Close to the top of the file you will find a parameter that says "TrackGauge ( 0 )" - the value is "0" for all routes I have encountered so far. Makes me kind of suspicious...maybe an "item that never was"???

Nov-30-01, 03:46 PM (EST) 32. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" Hi,I am just wondering about a couple of things: How many, in terms of ID number and also size of file in memory etc can MSTS handle regarding track pieces. There is a small group designing track sections to look more like UK track work on the trainsimfiles.net forum and with the people here designing, redesigning and getting the faulty track sections working (single & double slips, pedestrian crossings and others) and with bridge tracks, 90 degree crossovers, it will be a nightmare for everyone who is designing routes for personal use but especially for public distribution. There are many companies especially in the USA designing locomotives and rolling stock for commercial sale and commercially built routes are not far off.I feel that (if the id numbers permit) it maybe individually designed track pieces could be assigned numbers over a certain value thus allowing track to be custom designed for each individual route if necessary allowing routes to be even more accurately simulated. In my own tsection.dat file upgraded with modifications suggested in this forum id numbers up to 243 are used, with numbers 244 through 262 in the file but unused. I suggest that those with experience in designing track should propose a standard made so that there would be no clashes. If this is done while redesigned track still has to be released maybe MS would see this as their customers having faith in the program.
It should be remembered that the power of personal computers double every two years (approximately) what it a real frame killer now will be easily displayed in two years time.NN

Dec-01-01, 02:32 AM (EST) 33. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" i am pleased to report the double slip worksjust put the end piece between the 2 blue linesMessage Areas - "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" – image 21though it doesnt match up to a ladder yard
a 2 length dynamic track is too fill the diag gap, so i had to make an S curve using dyanmic to make it join up to the straight
with all the custom pieces, wont the loading guage, spacing between track, buildings etc be affected? especially with the curves, when you round the curve off it may/may not match up to the straight, or even be too tight for long rolling stock eg superliner********************************

Dec-04-01, 07:36 AM (EST) 35. "RE: Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces" Ok, I don't have much time this week but I hope to get a beta2 out soon.
I've got lots of good feedback from beta1, thanks people!I'm addressing the problems reported and I'm adding a number of track sections to make the track pack more interesting.
The double slip will be stackable. 5 degree Y-switch is included but realy needs a better shape file (now it's a highly distorted 10 degree Y). I also tried a 3-way switch, while it looks good in the route editor with three exiting paths you can't reach the rightmost exit when driving a train (also would need a new shape-file). Possibly something could be done with the keyboard controls but that will have to wait.A couple of questions that has been posted here:
The route.trk has a gauge entry set to zero. It seems this entry is not used and I hope it will stay this way. Currently it is possible to use different gauge tracks in the same route. Only problem is the person creating an activity has to differentiate track of different gauges as the editor does not help with this.IDs in tsection.dat. I've used numbers up to 510 without problems. You don't need to fill in the gaps even (I don't have any 3xx entries). Currently I'm using 4xx numbers for narrow gauge and 5xx numbers for MAGLEV track. I think it's a good idea to asign special runs of numbers to the different track types. The MAGLEV track will not be included in beta2. Craig has not finished enough sections to make it usable yet thus on his request we'll wait with it. I'll send beta2 to those testing beta1 as soon as I have it ready.
