Nov-26-01, 08:57 PM (EST) "Metropolitan Rapid Transit - just for the EL of it." LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-01 AT 08:58 PM (EST)Warning: Not for newbies.
I was playing around trying to make a realistic texture for a bridge, since we all know by now that trick of lowering the track into the bridge deck until only the rails show, I thought I'd take a shot at putting some ties on a bridge deck. Well, one thing led to another, you know how it goes, next thing I knew I was making Elevated track textures. So instead of working on my own route like I'm supposed to be (I was over at Dynamite Dugan's nightly bash, he led me into temptation and nobody showed up to deliver me from evil), I end up playing with Chris Cyko's "Crash Trash & Abused" route. (People who don't live in Chi-town don't know this, but that's what CTA really stands for.) Anyway, I reskinned the JP2RedGirder bridge to fake some El tracks, and this is what I came up with:Message Areas - "Metropolitan Rapid Transit - just for the EL of it." – image 1The 10 meter sections have skinny ties close together, 50m has fat ties far apart, the 25 meter sections look OK, but I get that odd tinting effect in the distance still. I lay down a JP2redgirder25m_Roadpiece section, raise it up in the air, position it so it's above the ballast and below the railtops, align it, turn on the terrain object box, CTRL C CTRL V all that stuff. After I get the top looking right, I do the same with the bridge sections themselves, leaving the tops of the side girders hidden underneath the roadbridge extension pieces. As I said, not for newbies, it's a difficult process if you don't already know every shortcut trick in the book. I had to hack Cyko's ref file to include the JP2redgirder and hunt down and paste the shape files in it, and positioning these things requires a considerable amount of practice with moving and rotating objects, I'd be here all week trying to explain all the CTRL-slide END-rotate stuff. And it needs work, I don't know how you would make a tight curve without the 10 meter sections, possibly someone could come up with another shape that could be added to it so we don't have the tiling problems. So anyone working on an Elevated Railway route, here's the Ace file:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3c02edb25efed3e6.zip Have fun, share the route when you're done. Hopefully this will Chris solve a major issue that I believe he's been fighting for some time.If I ever start a route, I'll be sure to employ these structures. It's serendipity to watch you guys collaborate and improve the sim. Great work and thanks again!Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

That's why my route is the best, I steal better and they have better ideas to steal!Message Areas - "Metropolitan Rapid Transit - just for the EL of it." – image 2

A bridge that doesn't show ballast or look like a combined road rail bridge.
And I was told that such a thing already existed.
Mind you with my lack of computer literacy and near sightedness I have probably just missed it.
Another one for my archive down under.
