Nov-24-01, 01:22 PM (EST) "New MSTS User" I just got MSTS a couple of days ago, and am already starting to download rolling stock, etc, and am VERY interested in the idea of making new routes. I currently have MSTS installed on a 16Gb partition on my harddrive, which I originally thought would be PLENTY. After reading several posts here and around the web, I am getting the impression that normal routes made will be using upwards of hundreds of megabytes of harddrive space. Am I understanding this correct? If so, this doesn't seem like such a great idea as MOST people would really only be able to install the game, download their favorite rolling stock and engines, and maybe make 1 or 2 good routes in the game before they ran out of space.
Please forgive me if these are stupid observations, but I am very eager to get started, but am very concerned about this. Before anyone suggests it, No, I don't have the extra money laying around to run out and buy another hardrive just for MSTS. I think I've already spent enough cash on WindowsXP, a Geforce 64 DDR card, a faster computer, and MSTS. Anyway, thanks for any comments you may have. BTW, is it possible in MSTS to move routes "in" and "out" of the sim easily without causing problems? This might be a solution for someone with limited HD space. Thanks again.Shawn Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-24-01, 02:23 PM (EST) 1. "RE: New MSTS User" 1) size of routes:Yes routes can be anything from 100 - 600Mb in size dependant on how many objects are used (until someone releases an object detector/installer)2) Easy to remove etc.Yep - just remove the textures and objects folder, and the route becomes only about 50Mb - then zip it up, and it will be about 2 Mb (just remeber to re-install objects and textures before reloading the route.)

Nov-24-01, 02:37 PM (EST) 2. "RE: New MSTS User" One way to save yourself alot of frustration is to create a small test route. Starting with a lot of tiles and miles and miles of scenery to do can dampen anyone's enthusiasm. While it is true the editors are buggy, if you are careful and back up your route frequently, you will have something to use and share. There's alot of information to know to building a route. Some of it is very intuitive since you are recreating the world you live in. Some of it is tough. My first suggestion is go to the Abacus site and download Mike Vone's route building guide. There is some help in the MSTS help files and there's plenty here, but having the guide would be enormously helpful to you. It's only $15. Also, you have 6 decent routes done my Kuju you can always go into and see how they did things. Good luck to you.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-24-01, 04:04 PM (EST) 3. "RE: New MSTS User" It is possible (and very easy) to move routes "into and out of" MSTS. I do this a lot. Each route is self-contained, and I just move a route I'm not using to another drive partition or CD-RW if I'm not using it, then copy it back when I want to run it.Have fun, and don't get discouraged. There's a learning curve to the route editor, but read the comments and suggestions here for help, warnings tricks, and tips.NickF Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-25-01, 01:50 AM (EST) 5. "RE: New MSTS User" Thanks for the replies and encouragement folks. I'm very eager to get started, and think I will download the route book. By the way, when you remove the texture files before zipping up the route, will it automatically load them back in when you run the route the first time after reinstalling, or do you have to manually reload everything. (obviously very new to this ) Thanks again, it's nice to go to a forum where people are actually "helpful".Shawn

Nov-25-01, 06:26 AM (EST) 6. "RE: New MSTS User" If you only have limited HD - delete the textures folders before zipping (easy way to store files) you will need to manually reinstall the textures file when unzipped, so remeber where the textures came from (unless there is a batch file which will install automatically)If you have 10Gb free etc. then just zip the route up whole.
