Nov-22-01, 09:17 PM (EST) "Clinchfield Route" I purchased MSTS with hopes of creating a CRR route. I started working with the editors/tools and think that it's highly unlikely that I'll be able to pull it off. I lack the skill. However, I noticed that others on this board are working on the CRR. I live on the CRR mainline just timetable north of Erwin and have lived along the line at various points for my whole life. If those who are working on it have any "on the ground" questions, please feel free to contact me. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I see lots of posts from people with hi end computers that have all kinds of problems , yea then the editor will bite hard!! MSTS has NEVER crashed my systems here.. "SAVE" helps get into the habit of saving every few min that way if a problem comes up its not a total loss.. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-23-01, 03:01 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Clinchfield Route" Yah, and copy the whole route folder once in a while, too, in a safe place, re-writing everytime . And if the RE so much as blinks, bail out and save! Save, Save and save some more. It is worth the trouble to learn it. It scared me for a long time, but I was bitten, and it all comes to you as you experiment and play with it. I've just started to understand it after only afew weeks of really trying. Thanks to the help of many folks here on this forum, I've learned a great deal!
Below is a scene in "Avery" on my hacked PO&N (thru the curtosy of Jim Ward) I bet no one knows where this is on the "stock" route...
Anyways, I guess one thing you should do is go through the RE Forums here and bone-up on some of the tutorials.
Of course, I'm using a pre-existing route and re-building it as I go along. The RGE tool has me baffled, and also my time is at a premium, so it's easier to use Jim's fine terrain and wipe out his hard work to fill in as best suits my needs and wants.(Thanks Jim!)
Bo, I totally understand your utter frustration and anger. I've lost two routes to unknown gremlins. But, i'm hooked - I always come back to try again. And each time the route seems to get better. Good LuckTim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-23-01, 11:18 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Clinchfield Route" Awesome picture for starters. Second off, I noticed the track going over asfault. Is this possible to do with the route editor? If so, can you please let me in on the secret? Thanx Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-23-01, 01:39 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Clinchfield Route" Stick with it, it does get easier with practice and time. As already advised save and back up continually. Don't worry about every little detail either if you're doing a long route. Place little dioramas here and there to break things up when the territory gets less interesting. The MTS Editor is a first in the Train Sim world, indeed just about any software release in that it allows you to build a virtually unlimited 3D world. Coming from the text editors or simple GUI of programmes like Railsim or Train Driver 3 there is a learning curve - but nothing can beat the satisfaction of loading up a route you have created then sharing it with others. Nov-25-01, 01:17 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Clinchfield Route" wp- In the PO&N, Jim's loaded up all the objects from all six default routes so's we have all the objects at our disposal, so you'll find the Asphalt under US tarmac (or some such name)in the "Object Selector" in the RE. Just place it on the tracks in the position desired, and drop it down to where you just barely see the wireframe below the railhead - hope you got good eyes! Tweak it to where you want it -it takes a little patience, but you'll getit!Tim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-23-01, 06:56 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Clinchfield Route" I would agree with all of the other comments you have received. We have all cussed the MSTS editor, but as you use it more and more, it gets friendlier, although it sometimes acts like one of my 3 cats. I have two females, and one male, all neutered. The male is most loving, luxueriates in being petted. One of the females is almost the same. The other female, every so often, will bite me for no good reason, or my wife - after which she want's to kiss and makeup.I just retired from CSX, and am working on the CRR myself. I started at Elkhorn City, and have just passed mile Z-75. Once, I get the main line done, I plan to go back and add the principal branches, north of Sandy Ridge, in the form they were about 15 years ago. The only problem I have had so far, is that many CRR tunnels are on various degrees of curve, whereas MSTS only gives you a few curved tunnel sections. What I am going to attempt, is to fake the tunnels in many cases, by laying down tunnel portals if I can't do anything else. Otherwise, when a train enters a tunnel, it will appear to be floating in space. Although retired, I still do small jobs for the CSX Signal department through a contractor, as well as small jobs for some of the contractors. When laying track, using a marker file, There are several other things desirable, all of which are free off the net. I downloaded topo map pieces from the MSN Terraserver, and then added approximate mileposts to them, by studying profiles of the line. (Once I get the thing done, I am going to give a copy to the Chief Engr., so it will continue to be easy to get the profiles) Also when laying track, I find it desirable to move the camera around until it is directly above the track to be layed, with altitude about 100M. Since MSTS does not account for spirals, but the marker files do, I found that the best thing was to do the entire curve at once, if possible, making sure that I had set the radius to the correct degree of curve, and then aligning the ends with the entering and leaving tangents, and not worrying much about the body of the curve. You say you are timetable north of Erwin, Unicoi, or Johnson City, perhaps. Although my railroad career spanned 33 years, and two railroads (Southern & CSX), I was born and raised in Nashville, TN, Vanderbilt-1960/1963 in Engr.J. H. Sullivan, P.E.
