Nov-20-01, 08:43 PM (EST) "have plan - need tree" First off maybe someone can tell me if this is possible.I have my G scale trains that will go around my Christmas tree. What I would like to have is MS Trainsim running on the monitor beside it. Having trains go around a big Christmas tree. I think it would look great for Christmas parties, morning and so forth. At first I was thinking circle, which I have and it works. From what I've read here before there are some folks that think ovals can't work and some think they can. What I have noticed is that the people that say they can have forgotten to mention that they only work in the explore mode. They work fine then! However there are no other trains (AI) around when you run in the Explore mode.So now I thought I'd just make an AI track. In other words make a big train yard behind the tree that you'd never really see. And run two main lines around the front of the tree. Put a peice or two of straight track (just enough to sit an engine on) in front of that. This would be the players train which would never move. The Yard would need to be big enough to hold a lot of train sets and set them to go onto the mains in turn and make there way around the tree. All the watcher would have to do is look out the right window and watch the show if you get me drift.I beleave I can do everything I just said except make the Tree. Is it possible to make that big a scenery item? Would someone make it for me? Maybe a combination of items(I know there is a term I'm not using here but can't think of it right now) that could be placed correctly and it would look like a Christmas tree.CaptJR

"RE: have plan - need tree" And you want to accomplish all this before christmas with MSTS's route editor?Good Luck I will try and see what the biggest object is for you, I'm just starting on 3D designing but it will be useful to know, I reckon you'll need a tree about 10 times the height of a train at least, but any more and you wont see much of your auto trains out the window and still get the full height of the tree on the screen. Yes, I said represent, not look like. I'd still like to have a good image to put there. Wouldn't need to be 3D really. The Train I'm supposedly driving ended up being behind the tree. I'm using Pete Hawk's Hacked Spotter Cam view Version 2I have the two trains running for about an hour, then I will have to restart it.CaptJR

I love the trains around the tree. Your layout is great. My father didn't put a train around the tree until we were all grown, but I remember he nailed our Christmas American Flyer switcher to a plywood board and for us it was good enough. I'd love to take a ride on your layout. Any plans to upload it?

Nov-28-01, 07:48 AM (EST) 5. "RE: have plan - need tree" Yes, I'm planning on uploading it. Should happen soon. I'll have two tracks in the upload. The other one is a circle that will run nonstop, you just have to remember to use the explore mode. Activites won't work in a circle. One funny thing that I've noticed is, on the cirle track, even in the explore mode, you can only use short trains. About 6 cars(engine tender and 4 others)is the max you can use or the train wrecks. Seems peculiar to me.JR Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Great news that you are going to upload. I don't see that short trains will be a problem at all. As I recall a typical Lionel set might be two F units pulling three passenger cars. My American Flyer by Gilbert was a switcher with two cars and a caboose. I look forward to your layout.
Thanks,

Sorry to hear about drive problem.
I also wanted you to know there is still interest in your Christmas Tree Train. Hope you get a chance to upload it, but certainly understand if it is not possible at this time.
