Nov-20-01, 06:30 PM (EST) "Merge three quad files changes the altitude." When I merge three quad files using microdem the altitudes are increased by a factor of 10. How do I stop this?

Nov-20-01, 06:32 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." I should add that it only happens with the 10x10 files and not the 30x30 files. They merge allright.

Nov-20-01, 06:44 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-01 AT 06:45 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-01 AT 06:44 PM (EST)MicroDem's help file states that when you use the Merge feature (in the Data Manipulation window), it converts the Z units to decimeters. Therefore, if before you saw a value of 500 (meters), after merging you would see 5000. However, 5000 decimeters = 500 meters. So why the difference between the 10mx10m and 30mx30m? Well, the one could have been meters and the other already at decimeters.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-20-01, 07:09 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." When I merge the 10x10 merged set with the 30x30 merged set and move the curser across a lake that is on both a 10x10 quad and a 30x30 quad the altitude goes form 1000 somethings to 10,000 somethings. Is that alright?

Nov-20-01, 08:50 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." The MicroDem Help file gives specific instructions on merging together 10m and 30 DEM.Example. Even though both hamburger and oranges are food (10m and 30m DEM are both DEM), I would not want a pie made with both (you cannot mix 10m and 30m DEM in the same merge). In MicroDem's helps, select Index, then type "merge" as your index term. You will find the process.Unfortunately, for our needs, it doesn't work well. Attached here is a zipped Word document explaining a little of the process. It does require that you use XYZMerge (do a search in this forum and be sure to turn on the Archive search). However, the fix is 100%.http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3bfb0851608387d3.zip Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-21-01, 11:45 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." I looked at the combined 30 and 10 files and there was 10,000 meter cliffs. I did the merge several times following the instructions and always got the ciffs. I like the 100% fix. Let's do that. "First you will, as usual, create an XYZ file using XYZMerge. Does XYZMerge use unmerged XYZ files created by MicroDem? MicroDem creates XYZ unmerged files but with several options. What are the settings for those options. There is no instruction or help file with XYZMerge.
Thanks for all your help.

Nov-21-01, 03:04 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." I removed the underscores and replaced them with dots in the downloaded quad files. Now XYZMerge runs. It unzips the 5 quad files over and over for hours--hundreds of times. After two hours I stopped the program. The XYZMerge file I am using was dated 8/20. I ran it with the timer setting at both 0 and 2. Made no difference. Any experience or suggestions with this problem.
Thanks
Chuck

Nov-21-01, 03:47 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." Yup. What version of MicroDem do you have, Version No. and Build No., please. My guess is that you have a later version that XYZMerge does not support. I do not know the correct version numbers, but I will know if the numbers you provide are correct or not.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-21-01, 05:07 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." I don't see a build number. What I do see is 5.1 beta ver. 14.10.16.1, Nov 2001. Since our last discussion I went back to MicroDEM to try the merging. On all the hiRes quads I set the Z axis to meters form decimeters or vice versa and merged. All the quads showed up correctly but one. No big cliffs. I have tried several times to add that one missing quad to the others but have failed at that. Your 100% fix using XYZMerge resonates in my head giving me hope. I would prefer to use it. Another interesting thing I noticed is that XYZMerge uses a dll I did not have. I then installed Visual Basic Ver 6 and the missing dll appeared. That, I think, makes this all very esoteric.
Thanks for all your time and help. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-21-01, 05:50 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." Go to this link:http://www.wood.army.mil/TVC/MicroDEMV5/microdem_ver_5.htmand download that version. It will work with XYZMerge. For the more detailed minded: Between the time of the two versions, the menu choices for the data manipulation (In/Out) window was changed, a new menu choice was added.XYZMerge uses SendKeys command to make MicroDem work. Thus, if the menu is changed, SendKeys may not work.Tips:Now, another *very* important point about using XYZMerge. Before you start it, be sure to have ALL other programs (except those in your system tray) closed, especially with this build of MicroDem. The ONLY program to have open, which can receive the Active Window command, MUST be XYZMerge. Then when you start XYZMerge, gently walk away from your computer. DO NOT TOUCH IT as long as you see MicroDem. Once MicroDem disappears, you can then multitask.Oh, I did say that those items in your system tray can remain. I need to amend that. If you have *any* background running applications which *may* activate, i.e., firewall, virus checker, e-mail announcer, you MUST turn it off. If it activates, and takes the SendKeys commands, XYZMerge will fail.I keep saying one last thing, don't I? Another tip. If XYZMerge fails, MicroDem has a nasty habit if eating the TAR.GZ files containing the DEM data. Therefore, ALWAYS keep another copy of the TAR.GZ files you will be manipulating in a safe place. I can't remember how many times I had to redownload because I didn't follow this advice. No one told me. I was one of the pioneers.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-22-01, 01:20 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." You, I, we did it. I now have mountains from 6 quads of different resolution in MSTS. Thanks for all the help. I will now see if I can do a larger route.

Nov-22-01, 07:56 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Merge three quad files changes the altitude." Next question. I can do 6 quads but not 12. Can they be done independently. I doubt it because the two groups of 6 would have different base elevations. How many quads can be done with 512 Mb of ram. With 768 Mb of ram? I have 256Mb, and will order 512 more tomorrow. When, in the process, does the seamfill.zip program get used? If ever.
Thanks,
