Nov-20-01, 09:34 AM (EST) "Zero elevation in XYZ file" I'm combining 6 or 7 Dems for form 1 large DEM in MicroDem. Then I'm exporting the file to an XYZ format for DemEx. When I examine the XYZ file, some entries have elevation numbers in decimeters and others have zero. Do I need to XYZ each individual DEM instead of combining them in MicroDem? Or is there some setting in MicroDem that's giving some of the entries in the XYZ file zero for the elevation? My XYZ files are HUGE. 500,000 kb in size. Is this normal? By the way, when I view the large DEM in MicroDem, it appears normally with no "holes" or missing data.I'm not giving up until I either learn how to put this route into orbit or they finish with the last shovel of dirt. Thanks,

Nov-20-01, 10:57 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Zero elevation in XYZ file" MicroDem's help file states that when merging DEMs, the resulting file is in decimeters.Regarding one or multiple XYZ files. Your choice.Zero for elevation usually means the elevation is at sea level. And unless a good wave comes along, that is correct. Regarding XYZ being huge, if you are using 10mx10m DEM (which means that an elevational sample is taken every 10 meters in both directions, then yes the XYZ file for that number of DEMs can be that size. You can tell that it is 10mx10m when you go to download the file. If it is approximately 2 MB, then it is 10mx10m, if it is approximately 2 KB, it is 30mx30m.You do have a problem, however, with the size of the XYZ file. DEM-EX does NOT use a disk cache. It only uses RAM. Therefore, if you have only 256MB RAM, trying to process a 500MB XYZ file is not going to happen. Even if you have 512, it probably (90% sure) won't happen. I'm not sure I would even try it with 768! Therefore, you *may* want to split it in half.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
