Nov-18-01, 00:51 AM (EST) "PO&N "Mountain Electric"- It Wont Go!--- Help Please!" LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-01 AT 00:54 AM (EST)Okay, I know I'm in new territory, here. I thought I could experiment with Jim's PO&N v31. I made a copy, stripped it of all (nearly)objects, changed the names of all files (that I could figure, comparing with the other routes) and went into the RE and began laying track. It's very loosely based on the Milwaukee Road's Electrified Mainline and like I said is just experimental. It's looking pretty good in the RE, I even have a modest Vendome Loop going on- well I *wish* it was going on. After creating a little activity to test it, I try to load it up to Play It. But, in the Route Selection screen, clicking on the "Mountain Electric" field, it just stops! The PC crunches an' grinds for a few seconds, then nothing- no CPU light- no grinding, no anything. The little "hand" (sometimes I feel like I'm gettin' the bird)freezes on the Mountain Elec. field. Only way out is to hit the Esc key.
Now, is there something I'm missing, is there something else in the files I should change? Something hidden in the ACE files?Or is it just taking a long time to load, being that it's a new Route? I'd sure appreciate any help, here. Thanks for looking.Tim Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-18-01, 12:06 PM (EST) 1. "RE: PO&N "Mountain Electric"- It Wont Go!--- Help Please!" Well, there's a bunch of possibilites here. The first one I can think of, is did you remember to put something in the activity description and the activity brief fields? You don't need much, typing a single letter in those two boxes will make it work, but leaving them blank screws it up. Another possibility, since you hacked the trackplan, some of the activities that came with it might have broken paths, so you should probably delete the activities, paths, and services from your cloned route, or fix the broken paths. Last but not least, unless the cloning changes are complete, the activity editor has an irritating habit of saving to the wrong folder. Everything you need for cloning is in the portogden4.trk file, open it up in wordpad:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that there are only 5 fields you need to change, all at the top, RouteID, Name, Description, Graphic, and FileName. RouteID, Graphic, and FileName should be given the same name, it makes the last step easier.

After changing these, save the file, and go through all the files in the root of \portogden4 named portogden4.ace, portogden4.ref, portogden4.tdb, and all the rest, (including the portogden4.trk you just hacked, obviously) and rename them to the same name you used in the .trk file.Note that this cloning procedure will work for any route, altho the originals are a little more complicated:----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note the route ID is Europe2, they used orientx for the filenames, but the filename for the references is Europe2.trk. Again, same kind of thing, USA2.trk is the file, bnsf.ace is the graphic, marias.whatever for everything else. BTW, removing objects isn't really necessary unless you're redecorating, but if you hack any track that has a marker on it and forget to remove the siding and platform markers it could cause trouble. Same thing goes for interactive objects and interlocking signals, fortunately for all you hackers there ain't any of those on the PO&N yet. Hopefully one of you guys will figure out how to get working signals in the PO&N, then I can stop beating my head against it.
If none of that helps, Tim, post your system specs, including OS version, might be in there. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-18-01, 12:51 PM (EST) 2. "RE: PO&N "Mountain Electric"- It Wont Go!--- Help Please!" Thanks, Jim, I think (hope) I've spotted the problem using your tutoring. And it does lie in the .trk file on line 5.Also, I didn't remove the platform and siding markers, so I'll go in today, when I get the chance, and fix that and, knock wood, will go for a drive up the new route to Wardburg( nee 77 meters). Thanks for your help, and time -and mostly making such a good platform to work from. I just don't have the time to develop my own terrain, and your's is perfect for the "Free-lancer" Thanks Again, JimTim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-18-01, 02:04 PM (EST) 4. "RE: PO&N "Mountain Electric"- It Wont Go!--- Help Please!" LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-01 AT 02:16 PM (EST)Hey, slow down Tim, you don't have to delete all the siding & platform markers unless you want to, just delete the ones you move the track out from under to avoid leaving unlinked orphans. I'm glad you like the PO&N for a platform, just out of curiousity have you tried extracting your own? There's a tutorial around here somewhere on how. Also, I know Bo tried at least one of them, but have you (Tim) checked out Kern Pegg's blank route templates? (The fun part of that is trying to conform the track to existing terrain as closely as possible, drive ya bonkers!) If you're gonna redo it completely anyway, Peggware route blanks are probably a better starting point. Making your own terrain (or hacking mine, as Boweavel can tell you) isn't really that difficult, check out this thread:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/1919.htmlRemoved all the objects, hey? You got Martha Stewart looking over your shoulder, itching for a complete redecorating job?!

Nov-18-01, 03:29 PM (EST) 5. "RE: PO&N "Mountain Electric"- It Wont Go!--- Help Please!" LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-01 AT 03:41 PM (EST)Hey Jim!!! Eureeky!!! I missed changing the "Graphic" line, and so, named it "Mountain Electric".ace- and Viola!! It WORKS!!!!
I now can go in to test the waters.
To answer your question, yah, I've gone into the RGE many times, but, I get bogged down and daunted by the realization that there's an enormous amount of time required to develope one from scratch, especially for a guy cursed to be a perfectionist. Besides, your terrain is pretty much what I'd require in the first place. I did read your tutorial on sculpting terrain with track pieces, And am feeling comfortable with the tequnique. What Fun!
Oh, yah, I also tried Kern Peggs "Route That Never Was", it never really was- couldn't get it to work. and I think Bo had problems with THAT one....too bad, because it was extracted from an area in my neighborhood. But, anywaze---I'm perfectly happy for now to rebuild the PO&N and repopulate it - I'm just a little bit worried that my choice to electrify was a wise one--So, once again, I want to express my high appreciation for all your hard work, I owe you!
"Vendome Loop" with the skyline of new unnamed(as yet- any Ideas?) city in the background, where Johnsburg once was.
The new station at the "Reservoir", where the coalmines were. This route is a continuation North to Fowlis via the old run-around at the coalmine, meeting the track from Timber city at TC Jct. a mile from Fowlis:
