Nov-17-01, 03:18 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" I'm sure that Jeff has an e-mail address, too. However, his rudeness to me in public, by not answering a simple question on a subject that he brought up, is something that I feel should be resolved in public. I respect your difference of opinion on this point. If he is a decent sort of person, he will respond decently. If not....Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-17-01, 04:49 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" I thing their has been some confusion on Jeffs post. I uderstood that Jeff was just outlining a scheme that helped him plan and visualize his route. I use a simular scheme with my Yosemite Valley route. I first imported the DEM data for the Merced to El Portal. I then researched the roadbed for the original route and generated marker files for the route. I also draw the route over the top of a topo map of the area. Finally I enter the route editor and lay the straight sections of track, followed with the Dynamic Sections.Weather one uses a manual drawing of the route, or AutoCad makes no difference in my judjment. I am shure that both my route, and Jeffs route will be welcome by the forum members once they are up-loaded to the library.Sam Schulenburg (Yosemite Valley Railroad 64 of 76 miles to go) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-17-01, 05:16 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" I'm not sure what all the confusion is about. Here's Jeff's original post:"After trying to use street maps in book form and on computer to make plans for new MSTS routes, I used a CAD program to make plans for new MSTS routes. It's faster to make changes in the CAD program than in the MSTS Route Editor. Jeffrey." He doesn't state that he plans or planned the route in the Route Editor here. I can see how one might interpret that last line to suggest that, but anyone who knows how the Route Editor works would know that wasn't his point. To me, that last line states that it's faster to change a track alignment in a CAD plan, then to change the actual track object itself in the Editor. It's similar to the old carpenters saying "measure twice, cut once"I'm probably guilty of beating this dead horse further. Maybe Jeffery will comment and clear this up in case I haven't gotten it right either. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-17-01, 07:18 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" Believe me, after laying over 450 miles of track, I know how to use the Route Editor, and how the Route Editor works; which is why I was confused by what he said. The interpretation that he was using the Route Editor to make the plans is inescapable.First, he says, "I used a CAD program to make plans for new MSTS routes." Here he is saying what he is using the CAD program for--to make plans for a new MSTS route. Then then says, "It's faster to make changes in the CAD program than in the MSTS Route Editor." What changes is he referring to? The only ones that can be logically deduced from the context--the "plans." Either that, or he has found a way to lay track, etc., in a CAD program! By the construction of his sentences, you cannot say that the first one is referring to plans and the second one is referring to laying of track. Therefore, to insert what he is changing into the sentence, the sentence would read, "It's faster to make changes in the CAD program than in the MSTS Route Editor."With that in mind, the only possible conclusion is that he is/was using the Route Editor to plan his route.Since I have used the Route Editor for laying over 450 miles of track, the natural thought was that I was missing something. Thus, I asked my question, "How to you plan a route in the Route Editor." To which he hasn't responded. If Jeff was not using the Route Editor to "plan" the route, which the above two sentences logically state, then all he has to say is that he wasn't using it that way. If he was, however, I would like to know how. This is a learning process for everyone, and if you can "plan" a route in the Route Editor, it certainly hasn't been communicated.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-18-01, 11:36 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" Your "logic" is simply incorrect. Now, why don't you lay off and go and lay another 450 miles of track. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-17-01, 07:14 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" I'm sorry for confusing messages. About the person who broke MSTS CD-ROMs, the person posted a message on the forum saying that he got mad and broke the CD-ROMs after he tried to run MSTS on his computer. I DIDN'T break the CD-ROMs. About using AutoCAD to make plans for routes for MSTS, I drew lines and arcs to represent track, and thick lines to represent stations. I drew most of the BMT/IND subway system routes in AutoCAD and I made changes in AutoCAD after finding out that the tracks don't meet correctly. After drawing and editing the subway routes in AutoCAD, I started laying track in Route Editor and getting measurements from the drawings. I thought that using AutoCAD to plan routes was a good idea but I ran into problems with the trackwork at Stillwell Avenue station and the Culver route north of Church Avenue in Route Editor. Nov-17-01, 07:33 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" Jeff, they was thinking you figured out some way to import your cad drawing into msts is all. What you could use is the two popular cad packages made for model railroading. Cadrail is one, 3rd Plant is the other (I think that's the name of it). I have the 3rd planet one. Used it to design my MR. Was pretty helpful. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-17-01, 07:38 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Question for JeffMorris" I tried to use programs for planning model train layouts but their default track libraries don't match MSTS track library and the sizes of model train layouts that I can plan using those programs are limited.
