Nov-13-01, 02:30 PM (EST) "Why so many marker flags, what do they mean?" Using Convert version 3 with default settings to prepare marker files, I get markers, LOTS of markers of either type 0 or 2. What do types 0 and 2 represent? Lots of times I can't make out a route at all, just a pile of markers right next to each other. This is mostly true with the large marker flags. Can someone please tell me what I'm looking at, and how to interpret how to use them properly? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-13-01, 02:44 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Why so many marker flags, what do they mean?" Don't remember if it is the 0 or 2, but one of them is the plots from the data. The other one fills in between those points. In convert you have the option of how close to put them, I think the default is .1. You can increase that to make things less crowded. When I get to an area with a lot of flags, I rely on my track charts to help me with track layout.David Klemm

Nov-13-01, 03:10 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Why so many marker flags, what do they mean?" David:Thanks for the reply. After playing with Convert for a while, I see how to make the files. One type marker signifies actual data, the other type are "fill-ins". What I was expecting to see was a data marker, several "fill-ins" another data marker, a few more "fill-ins", ect. What I don't understand is what that data represents, or how the data was collected. I'm under the assumption that when the data was recorded, Station A was set up and a shot to Station B was taken. Then move to Station B and shoot to Station C, and so on and so forth. While the distance between station I would expect to vary, what I sometimes see is rather than a well defined "connect the dots" type of output looks more like a pepperoni pizza! I'm not sure what "dots" go with what "dots".Anybody else care to chime in?Thanks again for your help Dave. It is appreciated.>Don't remember if it is the

I seem to remember the creater finding a source of data, like DEM data, that contained all the railroads and highways. He wrote this program to allow us to define a small area to pull the data from. I believe this came for the USGS group, but may be wrong. Do a search on convert or the authors name to find the original thread. Here is one of the early threads from Wes Downs the creater of convert3

Based on the posted pictures, I seem to have output looking like example 1, rather than example 2.Rather than creating a marker file for the entire route, I shall try as Wes Downs suggested and sample a smaller portion of the route and increase the secondary marker output. Perhaps that will make data a little more "sensable".>LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-01
