Nov-10-01, 10:38 PM (EST) "Scenery Education" Having just purchased the Techachapi route, I'm thinking I'd like to add some vegetation, buildings, etc. Knowing absolutely nothing about this, where might a newbie gain some insight into adding scenery? Thanks in advance. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-10-01, 11:00 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Scenery Education" A really good place to start is to see how Kuju laid its scenery in the default routes.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-10-01, 11:42 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Scenery Education" Sorry, maybe I didn't explain my question properly (or maybe I just don't understand your answer!). I'm trying to really understand how you go about importing scenery to a route. I'm sure it's fairly involved (for the uneducated) but is there somewhere that I can research how you do it (ie. bringing in vegetation, buildings, etc). Nov-11-01, 00:20 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Scenery Education" Poppycock, Sir Richard. All the default routes are real prototype routes, and everyone knows that real routes are worthless, the true artistry is all in the fictional routes.
Seriously, Curt, the best way to find out how to do scenery is to experiment, and don't be afraid to "waste" several weeks deleting the route and reinstalling it from the zip to start over. Place a bunch of objects to see what they look like.
Buy yourself a notebook, take copious notes on the cryptic names of the objects that appeal to you, and when you run out of memory exit without saving, open the route again, lay down a different class of objects, take notes on what they look like, repeat until you're half crazy. Scenery is an art, not a science, and you have to be at least a little unbalanced (or half stoned) to make it look good.
When the file library is back up again download some of the new routes, and check out some of the scenery made by the Masters. (Harrumph harrumph. Hey, I didn't get a "harrumph from that guy!) Port Ogden and Northern, mountain/wilderness freight, East Metro, Urban/rural Industrial mixed freight/passenger, Hoboken Shore, Urban Industrial harbor switching maze, Chicago-L, Urban Rapid Transit. Depending on what kind of route you're planning you can get some good ideas from those, if you're into European routes there are a bunch of those too. Every route I've seen so far has something that's unique about it, and everybody has different ways of getting around the limitations of the editor.
Some experiments are not ready for prime time. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-11-01, 00:31 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Scenery Education" Oh, IMPORTING scenery. You need the ultimate route tool for that, here you go.http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3bca43f267d4e8c4.zipDownload that, step by step instructions in the RouteEditor.txt file. Nov-11-01, 01:41 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Scenery Education" Where did you get the windmill from? is that an imported object (meaning a freeware addon) or is a default object, If it is what is it called?

Nov-11-01, 08:38 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Scenery Education" A collection of default objects, what model railroaders refer to as "kitbashing", where you take parts from different model kits and "bash" them together to make something else. It's the generic church, lowered into the ground until just the steeple is showing, and 4 sections of wood fence overlapped, twisted, rotated, etcetera. The fact that you guessed it was supposed to be a windmill indicates that maybe it would work, especially if I place it far enough from the track. Not for the PO&N of course, Island of Sodor if I ever get that finished. Currently placing a bunch of tunnel entrances to make brick walls, trying to get Henry's Tunnel to look just right.
Here's some "kitbashing" I did use on the PO&N, OEsnowsheds back to back, OEbridge6 merged with OEshortbridge for the entrance, Shinjuku Tunnel Station for the roof, US2logpile clutter (rotated to vertical and turned around so that the open bottoms face away from the tracks) for wood supporting columns.
I haven't actually used any of the new custom objects yet, the sticking point there is that anything custom would have to be included in the zip file. Eventually we'll figure out a way to do that without ballooning the download up to 100 megabytes, it's a constant agony trying to decide what to cut out for sharing routes. Nov-11-01, 08:45 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Scenery Education" LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-01 AT 08:48 AM (EST)Yeah now i have seen what you have done. I can see the two fence pieces. If you just glance at it, it looks like a windmill, but when you take a closer look you can see it. I agree the addon objects will increase the routes size. I've also noticed on the PO&N how you have placed the uk tunnel behind the ustunnel (i think thats what you used, can't remeber the name off the top of my head), that looks pretty good and it saves using transferes which drop the frame rate. I am going to try some kitbashing later, need a decent wharf for the port i am working on now, i will probably just using a bridge extended from a piece of land jutting out into the water.

Nov-11-01, 05:13 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Scenery Education" Hey, you want wharfs, take a look at Enocell's Hoboken Shore. There's a pier and a river jetty in the clutter section, I think it is, but niether is suitable for laying track on. I'm using the river jetty to fake Old West train station type wooden platforms:
Obviously, with the T shape, need something to cover that part, 2 buildings and a hut for a shed:
What happened to the original poster, anyway, did we solve his problem? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-11-01, 06:03 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Scenery Education" I don't know. I think he wanted to know how to get trees into the editor, so he could put some vegatation down on the Techachapi route.
You need to download jim's combind ref file, from the the misc section in the file download area. http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3bca43f267d4e8c4.zip
That is the link to the combind ref file. Download and follow the instructions. Hopefully this was some help to the orginal poster.

Nov-12-01, 10:02 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Scenery Education" Thanks, guys; I'll give it a whirl and let you know. Again, I wasn't even sure what were the proper questions/terminology to use, so we'll see. I've read through the section in the Sybex TS Strategies & Secrets (not particularily useful) on adding scenery objects. Guess I'll just need to play around with the Route Editor and try all your helpful suggestions. Thanks to all. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I was going to ask you were you found the windmill too : } As for your use of OEsnowsheds back to back, OEbridge6 merged with OEshortbridge for the entrance, Shinjuku Tunnel Station for the roof, US2logpile clutter (rotated to vertical and turned around so that the open bottoms face away from the tracks) for wood supporting columns... I was so in aww as i was cruising upto that tunnel entrance at 80mph that by the time i realised it was a dead end... :} Well it was too late ...Well done ..Catchya

Nov-12-01, 04:51 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Scenery Education" Run the shay on that route! Then, when you come to that panic dead end at 18mph, you can stop with a couple fingers clearance!
One great route!Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
