Dec-23-01, 05:10 PM (EST) 6. "RE: "BNSF Crawford Hill - Route in progress"" I've actually gotten a little bit done on the Crawford hill route. Scenery on the west 5 miles is complete now, although I'm averaging about 10 hours per mile. Seems I have TOO much information on the route. Placing every tree, structure and pole in the right spot takes too much time! Here's a westbound coal empty leaving Crawford (Those beautiful MAC70's c/o Train Artisan):
Rolling through farmland towards Joder:
An eastbound load approaching the crest of the grade at Belmont:

Dec-24-01, 05:47 PM (EST) 9. "RE: "BNSF Crawford Hill - Route in progress"" Ahhh... I'm having this problem too... DEMs are wonderful.. but how do you fill up the scenery without killing the frame rate. If you go forest objects, the game stutters while it recalcs. If you go fixed vegetation the tile size gets huge. This is becoming a real battle because the DEMs make it so gorgeous but you see so much farther than when I manipulated my own mountains in the Metro. This is truly getting to be a puzzle. Have you found a nice compromise?Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 07:51 PM (EST) 10. "RE: "BNSF Crawford Hill - Route in progress"" "Honor the prototype, frame rates be damned!"Seriously, I haven't run into too much of a framerate problem yet - at least compared to what I see on some routes (LTV runs at 1fps on my P500 TNT at the ore docks). I use transfers for the ROW roads however and take a pretty good framerate hit just from them. Just doesn't look right without them however, and making a custom texture for each patch is out of the question.I use alot of the treeline objects when I can - they're good for making view blocks. We could use some more of them for deciduous type trees. I did decide to only model what can be seen from the cab-view. Trying to encompass enough for the overhead views (2&3) just entails too much. Dec-24-01, 10:00 PM (EST) 11. "RE: "BNSF Crawford Hill - Route in progress"" Makes sense. I typically do go for the overhead view though... Partly I have areas which are elevated above the surrounding scenery too. You can see a good distance out of the cab. I'm still working on it though.BTW... How do you have the LTV route? I was under the impression it wasn't available yet. You a beta tester?Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-25-01, 10:13 AM (EST) 13. "RE: "BNSF Crawford Hill - Route in progress"" Although I don't plan to download this route, as I am an eastern RR fan mostly, I find John's treatment of scenery absolutely stunning. I was particularly impressed with his inclusion of the abandoned tunnel and approach cuts at the crest of the hill. I wonder if MS is looking at any of this stuff and wondering if they might offer it as a add-on in the future. They have done that more than once with FS products.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. Jan-15-02, 11:06 PM (EST) 14. "RE: "BNSF Crawford Hill - Route in progress"" Another 4 miles have been sceniced since the last update.Eastbound out of Crawford, we are about to see the last of the farmland for a while as we begin to hit the grade.
Although its been visible in the distance for many miles (the beauty of 'distant mountains') the challenge of crossing Nebraska's Pine Ridge becomes apparent at MP 418
As our grain train enters the 'lower horseshoe' the 1.8% ruling grade becomes apparent.
Every track, every road, every structure, every vegetation stand, and every farmplot accurately place for 7 miles to date, 10 miles to go.

Jan-15-02, 11:24 PM (EST) 16. "RE: "BNSF Crawford Hill - Route in progress"" The farmland & cuts are custom terrain textures (111 at last count). The right-of-way roads are literally hundreds of transfers. (framerates have stayed managable though IMHO). Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
