Jun-24-01, 05:10 PM (EST) "Who Is Working On What Route?" I was just wondering what routes everyone is working on? Are most people working on real life routes, or fictional?
There are several routes I would like to see; like an extended Northeast Corrdor up to New York.
I'm working on a section of the Canadian Pacific in Britich Columbia right now. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-24-01, 05:20 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" I have a few fictional ones I am working on right now. Once I finish those I will upload them and maybe make some realistic ones. These fictional type routes can be made very quickly, its the realistic ones that will take alot more time but I guess it all depends on how accurate you want it to be. Jun-24-01, 08:39 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" Right now i'm experimenting, learning how to place track and other objects, creating terrain. My ultimate goal is to create the Monon. It's a railway that runs from Chicago through Indianapolis (where i'm from) then onto Louisville. From Chicago to Indy is pretty level terrain. But the southern part of Indiana is quite hilly, not mountains, just nice rolling hills. Crossing the Ohio River into Louisville ought to be a pretty site. If and when i ever finish it of course i'll upload it for freeware. There's a nice little write up of the Monon in the current issue of Model Railroader Magazine. As far as accuracy... who knows? I'll do with what i have available. I can't honestly see someone nit-picking the route to death though unless it's horribly inaccurate. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-24-01, 09:30 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" Hey,I'm modeling the C&O Kanawha District, however for now I'm only doing the Cabin Creek Subdivision. I'm most likely going to do each subdivision as a seperate route so I can cut down on file size so its downloadable. If it proves to be a LOT of work I might burn it on CD's and sell it non-profit. The Cabin Creek Subdivision is about 50 - 56 miles long, however there are 6 long routes off it, and it produces a lot of coal in the 1946-8 era I'm modeling it in. I hope to have route, activity, locomotives, and rolling stock done by the end of the summer.Slew Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-25-01, 00:13 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" I'm currently working on fictional layouts to learn my way around, in particular, trying to figure out commuter lines and see how close I can implement subway-like features in an engine that doesn't directly support stuff. As someone else said, it's much easier to learn the editors when you're not worrying about the finished product matching some real world design. Doing design stuff in the past has taught me that the 'keep is simple, stupid' phrase is very effective. Besides, it's much simpler to say 'I wonder how you'd do this...' when you're not concerned whether such actually exists. I don't want to be stuck with a layout nearly done except for some important feature that I don't have the clue on how to do. Although it may seem like a waste of time, I'd heartily recommend playing with fictional layouts for a few hours before attempting the editor on a real track. After awhile, the editor become much easier to work with and then you can add the complications. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-14-01, 04:23 PM (EST) 55. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" The techdocs don't tell me how to begin with a clean slate. How do I extract terrain tiles to begin? Where are the complete step by step instructions ( I have no problem working with the route editor but as of now I would have to make a copy of an existing route and then edit it). My objective is a model of the New York, Ontario and Western in Southern and Central New York circa 1940s - 1957. Originally primarily a coal hauler and later in its life a bridge route to New England via Maybrook, NY and the New Haven.

I'm working on Ridgeport Valley, a UK-style route that currently includes a 4-track approach leading to an 8-track terminus, with sidings and other stuff. Loading gauge isn't UK unfortunately, but I hope to change that if anyone fancies customising points and other track sections Having issues with gradients, and some slightly unrealistic landscaping. It's tedious getting those hills and valleys 'just so'. They all look a bit flat right now.Disco Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-26-01, 02:16 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" A great resource for route maps is the Topographic maps put out by the Canadian Government. (The geographic division). They have topography and rail lines listed on them and are a great resource. About $10-12 bucks a piece.Darned if I don't have my receipt to give you the name of the store that I bought them from in Vancouver. Covers the whole country and you just buy the grid map you want. Jun-26-01, 02:04 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-01 AT 02:16 PM (EST)I am finishing up work on a long abandoned shortline, The Rome Railroad in north Georgia. This was the first railroad to serve Rome and one of it's engines was involved in the The Great Locomotive Chase during the American Cival War. I found some old topo maps that still had the grade clearly marked and have reproduced it as accurately as possible. I have moved it into the 21st century by transferring some existing Rome industries now located to the west on the NS 'K' line to the Rome Railroad. They include a large paper mill and coal burning power plant that takes unit trains. The route also has interchanges with CSX at Kingston and NS at Rome and could sponsor some CSX or NS bridge traffic. The route follows the Etowah river and features some very nice scenic bends in the river and bridges. It's been a great learning experience and a good excuse to get out and do some research in the field. I will be posting some screen shots soon and looking for some beta testers before I complete this project. My next will be the old Southern Rwy mailine from Washington to New Orleans ... in sections of course, the first being Greenville, SC to Atlanta. This was the route of the 'Southern Crescent', the last privately operated long distance passenger train in the U.S. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-26-01, 02:27 PM (EST) 15. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" I'm going to start on the BNSF lines around the Seattle area, mainly the lines around Lake Washington. There are a number of areas on the East side that would be fun for switching activities. I will probably start north of Seattle near Everett and only do the main lines, then get into the detail of the Seattle yard and East side lines. My goal will be to do the entire North/South BNSF run from Vancouver, B.C. to Vancouver, WA. This may sound a bit ambitious and it probably is, however if it takes me a year or so, it will be worth it! There are some UP line running through the area to, so maybe that will be added when I can find route info. If anyone else has considered this area, please let us know so we can coordinate our efforts. I may be a while in starting anything though as I have other projects to undertake not that the weather is nice for summer. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-08-01, 04:36 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-01 AT 04:41 PM (EST)bnsf4794 and I (ac4270) are working on SP/SF Tehachapi Pass in CA. bnsf4794 wants to build the route all the way over SF to Cajon Pass and into LA. I'd like to build the SP line to LA thru Solodad Canyon to LA. We're building the line as it appears between 1970 and the present. I want to rebuild Tehachapi to the 1953 era. The main differences would be tunnels 4 and 6 daylighted, the shoofly around tunnel 5 was built while half of 5 was cleared out after the 8/52 earthquake. The earthquake fault went thru tunnels 5, and the whole western end of the tunnel, it was decided, would be removed. The trackage between Ilmon and Caliente was single track with tunnel 1/2, Allard ended west of the horseshoe, Bealville was triple track, as was Caliente, SP Bakersfield yard had a double track ice deck, full roundhouse w/backshops, and the Buttonwillow/Taft branchlines were still in use.Have fun guys! P.S....All we NEED is for someone to model the later SP and SF steam engines;
AC4-6,7,8,10-12 class 4-8-8-2s,
F1,3-5 class 2-10-2s,
MT class 4-8-2s,

C8-10 class 2-8-0s,

T-28,31,32 class 4-6-0s,
Santa Fe 3800 class 2-10-2s, 3700 class 4-8-2s and 4-8-4s.
A 2-8-2 and a 900 class 2-10-2 would be good additions.
Along with some nice diesels;
F-7ABBAs in SP "black widow", SF "red warbonnet", and SF "catwhisker" schemes,
SD-7/9s and RSD-5s in SP "Tiger stripe", and "Black Widow" schemes,
SF GP-7s in "Zebra Stripe"

I just can't let up on trying to figure out all the stuff the KUJU didn't tell us about. It is so irritating and could have been so simple for them to document this stuff. Anyway, rant over.
Actually I have started a west coast logging line that will come to the sea from the mountains. I live in Santa Cruz CA and it is full of logging history and the Redwoods. The problem is that I have so many experiments along the way that I'll never clean it up. I may just dump it and begin again. I figure a small logging type might be up/down-loadable so I'm going to concentrate on that. Share and Share alike! I am going to start off making only 60 miles of the route from St. Louis to Union Missouri, which is the only part of the 245 or so mile line the current owner (Missouri Central) runs today.
The reason I want to do this little known line is, I helped rebiuld most of the 60 miles of track from St. louis to Union, I live close to it, I just know alot about the line and for the Rock Island fans out there.

So far, I have six lines (just sections) (and 16 stations), but there will hopefully be 7 lines and possibly about 100 stations allowing the freedom to rove around a whole area operating fast services or locals, and I intend to have some themed activities as well. Jul-24-01, 04:28 AM (EST) 39. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" I'm working on the former B&O Ohio & Little Kanawha branchline, which ran from Zanesville, Ohio to Parkersburg, WV until the mid-1970s. At the moment, I'm only modelling the north end of the line in Muskingum County, which is about 10-12 miles of track and includes a rather sizable switching yard at the Ohio Power plant in Philo, Ohio.The period I'm interested in modelling is the late 1960s, which was before the power plant closed and the line enjoyed frequent traffic. Unfortunately, the available motive power in the game isn't quite in period.... maybe the time I get the route done, there will be an SD9 in circulation Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-24-01, 05:33 AM (EST) 40. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" Im working on a fictional route with custom textures which will probably never get finnished because no matter what I do I either get 1 green signal and the rest yellow, or just yellow signals.
They just will not work for me, so the route cant be finnished. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 02:45 PM (EST) 42. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" Paul,I have been trying to collect info in that very route. I was just going to take it to Deming though. I am not really sure where to start, but have been looking for detailed maps of the area. My favorite part of this route is the Cienega Creek area. I have been down there once taking some pictures and plan to go back. Let me know if you have any luck with this route or need any info. I will share whatever I do have. Nothing spectacular in terms of scenery, but it goes through my home town! I'd like to thank JohnCS for the DEM extractor, wesdowns for the marker converter, and HAC for creating the great looking CP stuff. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-14-01, 07:40 AM (EST) 54. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" I am working on the Chicago Aurora and Elgin, which was a third rail interurban that served the western suburbs of Chicago from 1902 until 1957. The first phase of my project is to model the railroad as it existed in 1957, when it included service from Forest Park to Aurora, Batavia, and Elgin. Phase 2 will model the CA&E as of 1953 when it went all the way to downtown Chicago (using the Garfield L tracks). I now have track laid from Desplaines Avenue (Forest Park) out to Wheaton.Bob Wittick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-14-01, 05:56 PM (EST) 56. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" I'm working on a branchline in the UK, Twford to Henley-on-Thames. I also hope to model the mainline between Reading and Maidenhead that includes the Sonning Cut. The era is the 1950's before the track was reduced to a single line. Then it had an up and down line with extensive sidings at Henley. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-15-01, 12:53 PM (EST) 61. "RE: Who Is Working On What Route?" I'm modeling the Mauch Chunk & Summit Hill Railway ("The Switch Back"). About four miles of track laid to date. I'm stuck with modeling the 1827 form of the railroad (gravity-only) because the MSTS grade limit precludes the prototypes inclined planes (1845). Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
