Oct-19-01, 06:56 AM (EST) "For those who want aircraft in their routes..." To continue an earlier post regarding adding animated aircraft and boats to MSTS using car spawners - a means to add these objects to the car spawners without having ships and planes driving through streets - or cars driving in the air or water.Several had mentioned placing the road under ground, thus hiding the cars that would drive on the road. A nice start to solving the issue of adding non-vehicular traffic, but at an expense: you still see these dang ships and planes where normal trafic lies. The trick is pretty straight forward, and I'm surprised no one's dug into the files enough to make it work - until now...Below are a series of screens showing an aircraft flying around town:

The plane drifts easily along its path, and not a car anywhere in sight! Furthermore, you won't see the plane EVER cruising the boulevards, highways, or anywhere else you don't wish it to be. You can even increase the average speed from the slow-poke 55mph to one that's a bit more realistic. The shots above were of a plane traveling at about 100mph.I hope you enjoyed this little tease. As mentioned, this is to be a freeware project for MSTS - might be too late however, with Trainz just around the corner.I need folks interested in helping get this project ironed out, up onto the file servers, and to the masses before MSTS gets blown away in December. You can email me direct at mnelson@3dtrains.comCheers!

I certainly hope MSTS doesn't get "blown away" by Trainz, I for one have no intention on replacing MSTS, I've got too much time invested in route building to give up on it now.David Mikulec

Seems Trainz isn't designed for modeling in 1:1, rather it is a virtual home layout. I think many will like that and others will want what MSTS offers. While the route editor was frustrating at first, it's not that bad now. Only two things need to be done to make me happy. LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-01 AT 04:12 PM (EST)I'm referring to the route editor and how it doesn't release memory during use. Requiring frequent saves and restarts. As for the world file, it can only be about 800k before it locks up the system during a save, again in route editor. I haven't heard any updates for a very long time on the release of your commercial model, any hints? (Don't count on all of us abandoning MSTS to chase after Traniz.) Oct-19-01, 01:32 PM (EST) 5. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." Pretty cool about the plane... sure like to know how you pulled that off.As far as the premature death of msts I think that's a bit overstated. There's alot more people in this world than the few we have here on the forums. MSTS had a bit of hoopla about it from some of the gaming mags and online mags before it ever came out, at least six months worth. This close to Trainz release, I haven't seen hardly anything about it. I never even heard of Trainz til I came on here and even after that it was at least a month or more before I found the site. And the only reason I looked was because I got frustrated with the msts editors, not because I cared to know anything about Trainz. I don't know how Auran plans to get the word out for the release of Trainz, and for that matter, don't care. I tried going the two sim route with flight simming and found out for me it was either one or the other. Already have msts and got to where I know it well enough that I can live with the bugs and what nots. I do think there is a place for both sims but I really don't care for the ballyhooing for the one over the other especially since Trainz isn't even out yet. I mean, wouldn't you feel embarrassed to have made all this noise and Trainz doesn't live up to the high expections surrounding it? Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting Auran or Trainz down, I just don't see this world take over like some people think. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

But, if you want to line up MSTS along side trainz as much as I am enjoying MSTS, I know a good sim when I see one, and Trainz has added all of things that MSTS should have.MSTS is a good sim, it just fell short of allowing it to be user friendly. But, we wont give up on it, 3Dtrains will still be building for both Trainz and MSTS as they both have their place. But, I cant wait to use TRAINZ.

Besides, I've got too many projects on the burner to give up now! However, the biggest difference between the "hoopla" surrounding these products is that MSTS was hyped more from a marketing team, while Trainz is being hyped from the beta team - guys closer to earth than the shirts at MS IMHO. I'm sure there are some ass kissers in the beta camp down under, but product for product I think Auran speaks volumes over MS when it comes to listening to what folks want. Cheers!

Oct-20-01, 02:01 AM (EST) 10. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." I'm sorry, but none of this is making much of an impression on me. Not that what I think influences what somebody else wants. But from hearing they are having to take cash in advance, to next to no promotion I can find anywhere, to weird ideas where you buy the number of a engine or something like that, to more modules for every little thing, and then they say it's a model railroad sim?, to the finaticism I've seen displayed here at times; all this says to me, something isn't right. Never seems to hurt to have a healthy dose of skepticism.Another thing that bothers me, and I'm just talkin here.. is when I hear alot of talk about how great this Trainz will be, it's always in the context of how lousy a time someone couldn't get this to work in msts, or they couldn't get that to work in msts. I've seen people talking about Trainz like it's already out. That's just plain strange. For me, I believe the problems with msts will get worked out one way or another. How long will that take? Of course I don't know. Obviously too long for some. At the same time, I'm already doing what many are still waiting to do.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-20-01, 08:38 AM (EST) 11. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." I plan to use MSTS and Trainz. Auran already has products for MSTS. They obviously see a peaceful coexistence as well. I think people don't often realize how powerful MSTS is as a sim. I see the ease of route editing with Trainz but I see flexibility and realistic operation with MSTS. Trainz even admits their software philosophy is not modeling entire regions of the world but representations of small areas of the world(i.e. home layout). Instead of declaring the demise of MSTS people should be excited about the possibility of having two excellent sims.

Oct-20-01, 11:19 AM (EST) 13. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." I think the operative word here concerning Trainz is that it is a 'Model Railroad'. From all of the posted screenshots and movies I have seen from Trainz, I keep getting the same impression. When you are using MSTS the emphasis is on realism and some of the sims scenes and models give an impression of looking at a photo of reality. In the Trainz screen shots I have seen, they have more of a feel of looking at a painting, an idealized view instead of hard reality. I guess the difference I see is you play with Trainz, you run trains with MSTS. Is there a market for both? Sure. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-20-01, 11:52 AM (EST) 17. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." Regarding model vs. real world - Trainz "claims" to use realistic physics, yet also claims to be a simulation of model railroading. Since you can't scale physics, that everything sits behind the glass of your monitor anyways, and that it's about moving locomotives and cars from point A to B, doesn't that make Trainz a railroad simulation? Cheers!

Oct-20-01, 02:10 PM (EST) 18. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." Here's the thing. All of us are gonna have our preferences of what makes a sim, a sim. No one is happy with the way any software vendor can release buggy products. All of these sims, planes, trains, tanks, ships... have been released in horrible states. Most of the bugs do get fixed. May not be today... nor 6 mos. from now, but they do get fixed. Most of them do, anyway. Each sim is a story unto itself. Falcon, Man of War, Panzer Elite, Fly.. even Kent's beloved Propilot... they all start out with problems, lot's of 'em..., over time they get better. Look at the diehard Fly 2 crowd. They are having to download millions and billions of bytes to get the sim working up to what they thought they was picking up from the store. Ask any of them if it's worth it or not. They'll tell you they are mad because they have to do it. They paid out their $50 just like we paid ours for msts. Do they know there will be a Fly 3? Beats me. But the love flying and they love the Fly simulation. Should we go into their forums and rub their noses in it? Remind them of Fly's demise before it's happen? Mabybe we should tell them that the new release of FS2002 will knock Fly2 out of the hemisphere, eh? I think that's a little tactless, don't you?MSTS to me broaches a broad range facsimile of realness, and that's what I'm looking for. I'm not looking for beta testers who are excited, I don't want to talk to manufacturers who want to talk to me, I don't care that the product is or is not from Microsoft; this is about trains and whether the sim represents a resonable facsimile of real life.If I sat around and fretted over every game or sim, application or OS I bought that had bugs, I wouldn't have a computer.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-31-01, 08:12 AM (EST) 23. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." Sorry - no upload...I've run into a big stumbling block...Hopefully, one of you guys can figure it out. Here's an illustration on how it's "supposed" to work:
The idea is simple: build a road in the sky; add a car spawner; add the plane/boat objects; then hide the road with regular cars. Evrything works up until the hiding of the cars. You can hide anything when using alphas in the locomotives, but trying to do it for a static object doesn't seem to work (another Kuju-boo-boo).The plane and ship are built with their z-axis set to -50m and -100m (respectively). This way, they can fly around all they want and never appear on normal roads. The illustration shows the lower plane beneath the MSTS world, while a normal car drives the same hiway above. The "sky hiway" is hidden by an box (with an alpha channel) surrounding the road and hiding anything that drives through it. Alas, no matter the alpha applied, I can't get the dern thing to hide anything! Trees, buildings, everything is still visible through the alpha layer. Planes can pretty much take any path. However, when doing ships one needs to keep in mind that the "sky road" MUST be level...Otherwise you have...er...a hydroplane! Anyways - I'm too pooped to go further until I can get around the alpha issue.Cheers!

Oct-31-01, 11:44 AM (EST) 25. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-01 AT 11:45 AM (EST)Really neat idea, I assume the road in the air is hidden as detail level 10, I wonder if it can be done another way.can you create a railway track, level 10 (invisible) and create a train that looks like a plane/ship and then get it to fly/sail the track by setting it up as an auto train in the activities editor. If you want the plane to take off at more than 3 degrees then bend the track as covered in post on steep track laying. The only disadvantage would be that you couldn't fly/sail in circles otherwise you would crash the sim. You could even set up different planes/ships and routes to fly to several airports/ports using switches.just a thoughtTerry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-31-01, 08:56 PM (EST) 33. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." The idea is to create an environment that doesn't slow the sim down (much). The basic plane I created only has about 40 polys, which is only slightly more than the default cars that ship with MSTS.The amount of polys in an aircraft from CFS2 orFS2002 would far excede anything useful in as far as frame rates.Cheers!

Yep youre right, anyway we wouldn't want to get into copying anyway, I have FS2000 and CFS but others wont. What about the rest of my suggestion? do you think it will work? I have no experience at setting up traffic so I cant get a plane/train to fly while driving another. Anyone know how to do this?Lining up the pieces of track at a height wasn't easy either, at least laying a course for the boat would be on the level surface of the river. Any tips on lifting track up into position?I have a good .ENG file for this which I made for climbing 30 degree hills for a rack and pinion railway. Its a modified GD 0-4-0. I got up to 750 Mph on marias pass so it would make a good aircraft! (as the engine did when I got to the terminus )terry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-03-01, 06:22 PM (EST) 36. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." How do you get the car speed above 56 mph(90 kph)? I've been digging through files and just haven't found anything controlling the car spawner speed. The truth is that it seems like the actual speed of the car spawner in the sim is lower than what you set it for. I start to pass cars when the train I'm driving reaches 40 mph even when the car speed is supposed to be 56 mph. I would like to be able to set it to something more reasonable. Usual interstate traffic moves at 70 to 80 mph, for instance. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
Hack (361 posts)
Nov-03-01, 06:35 PM (EST) 37. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." The speed is set in the World files:
CarSpawner (
UiD ( 526 )
CarFrequency ( 5 )
CarAvSpeed ( 80 )
TrItemId ( 1 0 )
TrItemId ( 1 1 )
StaticFlags ( 00000100 )
Position ( -274.845 1 428.922 )
QDirection ( 0 0 0 1 )
VDbId ( 4294967295 )
)
I'm unsure of the range, but it's probably 20+ in either direction...my best guess. So, by setting the average speed to 80 (as in the above example, and based on my assumption on range), you would generate traffic from 60 to 100 mph (80 being right in the middle). I just wish there was a means to control the range...As it stands, I get some fast planes/boats or some ol' granny driving them. Go figure.Cheers!

The only disadvantage is that you have to run an activity instead of explore route and that all boats/planes have to be scheduled rather than be spawned randomly, but this is more realistic anyway and allows for activities involving the boats/planes. There is no problem of speed using this method, I have an eng file which gives a top speed of 750 mph.terry@cyberstorm.co.ukthanks Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Then there would be no need for adding extra activity's , Just car spawners along invisible roads..Anyway its done..Its all sounding good to me , If i had any idea about coding i'd definatly be trying my 2 cents ..but i only know how to turn a comp on and play it..therefore im a spectator, But its turning into one hell of a show..Good work fella's, and good luckCatchya's Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

LAST EDITED ON Nov-04-01 AT 06:00 PM (EST)Thanks Marc, the Basic Pink Pig will do, could you email it or let me know where to pick it up, I want to see what the aircraft combined with my (950mph!) 040 eng file will do when scheduled, whether i can get it to taxi out and take off realistically. Ill probably buy a 3d tool soon anyway, but I just want to try everything together in a test routeperhaps I could set up a race between the Acela 500 and the pink pig TerryBy the way have you found a way to hide the sky roads yet? I hadnt considered cars since I only have a 1GHz laptop and I tend not to have cars enabled, as my frame-rate drops too much. Can I ask a question? If you've been building sky roads how do you lift them into position easily, Ive found it a right pain to lay track without scenery supporting it. The next track usually ends up in a field a half mile away. Mind you I dont have an easy numerical keypad to play with on the laptop either, I have to hold down function keys and use the alpha keyboard.Your help is appreciatedTerry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-14-01, 02:56 PM (EST) 47. "RE: For those who want aircraft in their routes..." My plane (Flying train) is working with an activity on an invisible track from an airport I created on the on the japanese route. You can spawn aircraft from the hanger, that take off and fly over the mountains on schedule. As you can see, we need a few planes now. Sorry but I dont have a 3d Designer program (yet)

I just read through the info on the new Rhein Valley route being released commercially at http://www.deutsche-strecken.de/ and they feature moving planes and ships. I'd still like to know how you do it.
Cheers,
