Oct-05-01, 10:37 PM (EST) "What are the do's and don't in building a route??" I was wondering about this becuase sometimes my route I'm making just crashes? I have some parts where scenery roads and buildings and set too deep into the ground and stuff like that, would that make a route crash? Also, I deleted alot of switches at one time once and then I got the "Cannot delete switches" message and my route never worked again. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Abacus has a book out you can download by Mike Mivone which I read a review that said it was pretty good. Here's a couple of pointers. Do one step at a time and plan your route. I say this because deleting seems to cause problems. I think I know why too. I was just reading in some file in the root folder of train-sim how not to delete wait points and things like that in the Activity Editor because it creates it's database sequentially. I believe this is with the Route Editor too. For instance, let's say you are wanting to delete some track. Don't work from the middle outwards. It causes problems. Work from one end to the other til you get to what you want to delete. This isn't always the case. But it can cause you problems so know what you want to do so you minimize deleting. Save the heavy stuff for last. Heavy stuff as in crossing gates, spawners and especially, signals. Backup incredibly frequently. You just never know when diaster will hit. Restart your computer frequently too. If the screen starts getting jerky or you see the route window flicker from black to what you should be seeing. Discipline yourself to bail out. And be prepared, that whatever route you start, will take a long time. Also, don't try to take on a massive route all at once. You can do parts of it at a time if you're not using markers or dem data (although I did see a post where someone said you can do this with dem data; probably markers too). But the best advice is start with a one tile route to get the mechanics down.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-06-01, 10:03 AM (EST) 2. "RE: What are the do's and don't in building a route??" My "Step by Step Guide to Route Building for Microsoft Train Simulator" has 197 pages of do's and don'ts. A detailed description of its contents, with screenshots and illustrations, is available at http://avsim.com/hangar/utils/mvchallenges/mstsguide/MSTSguide.html. It is available for download at $15 from Abacus at http://TrainSimulatorWorld.com/, or you can spend hundreds of hours finding the do's and don'ts in this very helpful forum. To Rich's good points I would add that you should test your route in MSTS every time you have added a few switches, and certainly after adding each loop or wye. If you wait longer before testing, it becomes a nightmare to figure out where you made a mistake.Michael Vone Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Or do as I do and just add bigger yards to other peoples masterpieces , That works on Rich's theory of starting from and end piece..and never from the middle and definatly not a switch !!!PO&N has doubled in size with no problems, cept one..Signals...
And now the E Metro RR has fallen to the Boweavel building bugs..(Soz Rich , was bound to happen..all that spare land!)Catchya's Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
