Sep-28-01, 08:06 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Marker File " The Philly area is very dense from the point of view of track routes. To correctly do a route, you need not only the markers for the tracks themselves, but you also need a track chart from the railroad(s) you are building the route for, so that you can accurately locate turnouts, mileposts etc. With the recent emphasis on security, it may be difficult or impossible to get those in the future. By using a road map, or similar item, you can "fake it till you make it".Track marker data can be obtained through the Convert3 route indicated in another reply. It is a huge download, 30M or so, but well worth it. I would also recommend that you get the Dem extractor program (DEMEX) which is also in the files area, and then you need to download MicroDem as well. There is reference in this forum to where to get it. Also, some of the developers have put utilities on the files area for smoothing out DEM data. There tends to be an area of error on the border of each Quadrangle, which leads to "ditches" in the terrain. In some cases these go all the way to zero elevation. When you use MicroDem to combine Quadrangles of DEM data, it will display a map of the combined data. If there appear to be horizontal or verticle lines in it, typically blue in color - you will have "ditches". I find it helpful to resample DEM files with MicroDem, and get everything to the same resolution. 30x30 is sufficient. The "z" axis has to all be the same too, and I resample this to "feet".Lastly, it takes more computer than I currently have to produce a route, so I have concentrated on creating some scenery, up to a point, and saving it to a CD/R for further use in about 6 weeks, when I upgrade. My plan is to upgrade to a Athlon, at least 1G, 512M of Ram, and reuse most of my current hardware. This will save about $1K over the cost of a totally new PC.Attack this activity with patience. You will find that it is amazingly accurate, especially after you get rid of the ditches. I am working on two routes that I am very familiar with and have found the terrain to be uncannily accurate.J. H. Sullivan, P.E.

Sep-29-01, 01:22 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Marker File " I too like to use mapblast.com. Despite the fact that it is a bit more involved, it does show the location of cross streets and cities, giving a good location reference for markers. By the way it's great to see another metal head railroader. I saw a cartoon in an old Model Railroader showing a guy wearing a Metallica shirt with long hair waiting at a bus stop next to a guy wearing a vest with railroad heralds all over it and they're both looking at each other with the thought bubble "wierd". I kind of mix both together. I used to get some wierd looks at the bookstore in the mall when I would be buying Model Railroader, Trains, Guitar Magazine, and Metal Edge all at the same time. Anyways I wish you look on getting a good marker file together. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
