Oct-03-01, 01:42 PM (EST) 20. "RE: Drive problems" well.. I could take Makeace, and then cut it to paper tape.. but at 400 bytes per meter of 8 channel tape.. that's almost 400 meters of tape... (and yes, I still have some paper tape from my early days in IT..)

All I need to do is take apart the Christmas Wreaths and use the confetti in the bags in the basement to fill in all those annoying holes sothey can be reused. Sep-28-01, 09:16 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Drive problems" My recent computer (a powerfull Sinclair ZX-81 with 16 kb RAM and external cassette reader) don't accept MSTS CDs (sure, it's a Microsoft copy protection scheme !).The CDs don't fit inside (external) cassette reader... What can I do to solve this problem ? Really I'm very dissapointed The best way is to look for a good PC emulator software, and CD-ROM reader interface, developped for this fantastic computer. Oct-01-01, 08:50 PM (EST) 17. "RE: Drive problems" Heres how its done, Since Ive lost all my hair and my wife is ready to leave because of time spent with the editors, I finally realized its easier to build a real railroad. I threw the pc away and started hauling home ties and rail sections in the back of my pickup when I can find them laying around at landscaping stores and scrapyards. My neighbor was really pissed when I layed my first 100' of mainline across his backyard. Figured I would use his pool for a water source when i luck into finding a steam engine at the scrapyard. I work construction and my concrete contractor is getting suspicious over the gravel he has been coming up short, But I need ballast and lots of it. Next summer I plan on getting rid of the gas grill and patio and installing a blast furnace for making my own spikes, rails etc.
Hell its easier than textures. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-02-01, 11:49 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Drive problems" LAST EDITED ON Oct-02-01 AT 11:58 PM (EST)After hot-footing it home on my fork-lift truck from my local computer store, from where I eagerly purchased MiSTakeS the IBM punch card edition. I shoveled coal on the burner, raised steam, opened the valve on my 286-1AX and went away for the week-end while it loaded 'Pen and Paper' up (the OS).
Lo and behold, on my return I found I had been burgled!!!! The six billion IBM punch cards for MiSTakeS were missing, nowhere to be found only two shiney tea coasters in their place
So if anybody happens to trip over them (you can't miss them, they're yay big and this wide and that high) they're mine. If possible please could you post them (either all at once or one at a time - I like to receive mail) to The Men in White, 88 Padded Cells, Madman-on-the-Hill. Cheers P.S. what is a 5 1/2" drive?? only got a punch reader I just can't keep up with these leaps and bounds in technology, you'll be telling me vericles no longer have solid steel wheels Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-05-01, 03:07 AM (EST) 28. "RE: Drive problems" 5 1/2" refers to the thickness of the disc not the diameter.
As I recall the width was about 36" and it fitted a IBM 1311 drive. Weight was in the 30lb range and in strong sunlight you could see the bits Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-06-01, 03:47 PM (EST) 29. "Proper Care of Floppy Diskettes " Follow all of these instructions carefully for error-free floppies!! 1; Never leave diskettes in the disk drive, as data can leak out of the disk and corrode the inner mechanics of the drive.Diskettes should be rolled up and stored in pencil holders. 2; Diskettes should be cleaned and waxed once a week. Microscopic metal particles can be removed by waving a powerful magnet over the surface of the disk. Any stubborn metallic shavings can be removed with scouring powder and soap. When waxing the diskettes, make sure the surface is even. This will allow the diskette to spin faster, resulting in better access time. 3; Do not fold diskettes unless they do not fit into the drive. "Big" diskettes may be folded and used in "little" disk drives. 4; Never insert a diskette into the drive upside down. The data can fall off the surface of the disk and jam the intricate mechanics of the drive. 5; Diskettes cannot be backed up by running them through the xerox machine. If your data is going to need to be backed up, simply insert two diskettes into the drive. Whenever you update a document, the data will be written on both diskettes. 6; Diskettes should not be inserted or removed from the drive while the red light is flashing. Doing so could result in smeared or possibly unreadable text. Occasionally the red light remains flashing in what is known as a "hung" or "hooked" state. If your system is "hooking" you will probably need to insert a few coins before being allowed access to the slot. 7; If your diskette is full and you need more storage space, remove the disk from the drive and shake vigorously for 2 minutes. This will pack the data enough (Data Compression) to allow for more storage. Be sure to cover all the openings with scotch tape to prevent loss data. 8; Access time can be greatly improved by cutting more holes in the diskette jacket. This will provide more simultaneous access points to the disk. 9; Diskettes may be used as coasters for beverage glasses, provided that they are properly waxed beforehand. Be sure to wipe the diskettes dry before using. (see item 2 above) 10; Never use scissors and glue to manually edit documents. The data is stored much too small for the naked eye, and you may end up with data from some other document stuck in the middle of your document. Razor blades and scotch tape may be used, however, provided the user is equipped with an electron microscope. 11; Periodically spray diskettes with insecticide to prevent system bugs from spreading. All this and more on http://www.looniebin-of-jokes.comEnjoy... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-09-01, 02:42 AM (EST) 34. "RE: Drive problems" If I recall, they are limited in the use of RAM. I would sugjest to anyone with limited RAM (Random Access Memory) to incress your ROM (Read Only Memory), and re-name it often. Also remove and reconect the cables running to the ROM drive often, so as to Randomize it's Access. Also, some computers lacking power can easily be up-graded by adding power to the outlet. A good electric dry outless will double the power in, and of course the power used. As for floppy care, I take them out of the plastic case right away, that way I can stack more in the drive bay at once. Stone. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-11-01, 08:36 PM (EST) 37. "RE: Drive problems" I have just been given a Dell 386 (no graphics card, no sound card) with Windows 3.1 (on 69 million floppies) and Um dunno what memory it's got, but I think it maybe an imp with a notepad. Does this rank as the fastest CPU viable to run MSTS on, or is it running too fast???? Later I found 3 slots in the back that are plated over (why make perfectly good holes and then cover them over again?), however, if I remove one of these plates the CD's for MSTS will fit nicely, will this enable the 'Send Error' to contact M$ by directly jumping out the back and running to them? as the modem is like this ----> (__(_)------------------(__(_) (remeber these from your younger days???) Tho I am concerned by the fact that DirectX does not support my non-graphics and sound cards, could this cause the slow frame rate of 1fps (frames per seventy-year) and choppy sound??? Ya just gotta luv this post

Oct-19-01, 05:55 AM (EST) 41. "RE: Drive problems" I encountered the same problem, how do I load MSTS on my
ELF 1802?? There doesn't seem to be any kind of "slot" where
the CD will fit. How will MSTS display on the ELF?? All it has
is 8 7-segment LED's, can you actually see a train on it??
I have 2K of memory which was BIG in 1978 when I bought the
ELF, do I need to upgrade to 4 or 8K of memory to get good
peformance from MSTS. Do the MSTS control functions work
satisfactorily with a Hex keypad? I don't have a mouse or
trackball because there are no "ports" to connect one and
the operating system, COSMAC V1.3 doesn't seem to support
such input devices. But I have some success in programming
it, it played a crude rendition of "Yankee Doodle" after
several hours of entering hex data with the keypad. Once I
got it play "Yankee Doodle," I had hopes that the ELF might
be capable of running MSTS once I figure out how to connect
a "slot" to it that a CD could be inserted into. ELF will be
offering a kit in the future that will allow me to connect
an ASCII terminal to the ELF, it will cost $200 plus the
cost of the terminal. Maybe this what I'll need to run MSTS
on my ELF........Fred Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-19-01, 10:49 AM (EST) 42. "RE: Drive problems" I checked the resources in my personal museum of old computers...
I had no success at all...
Neither the old 1991 DIGITAL VAX nor the Olivetti LSX5020 would
run MSTS properly... might be beacause the old serial terminals
belonging to the systems have a quite limited capability of
graphic display.
Has anyone thought about reverse engineering MSTS and porting
it to the TI 83 and TI 86 graphic calculators? MSTS on these
would be a great way to kill time in university lectures.PvF
